This Is Shaft’s DS

11:00PM Luke Plunkett | If Shaft had a DS, and wasn’t too busy doing his thing (or things…you know…), we’d like to think this was Shaft’s DS. Failing that, we’d like to think one day Nintendo saw fit to quit pitching their colour schemes at nerds and women and started thinking of the Pimp my Ride demographic. They’re part of the blue ocean too, Nintendo. sophos777 @ Flickr [via Boing-Boing] More »

Examining Blade Runner’s Influence On Gaming

10:00PM Luke Plunkett | 1UP are running a nice feature on Blade Runner, and the influence Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic has, with its bleak urban landscape and exploration of humanity, had on videogames and their settings. While some of the examples drawn seem a bit of a stretch (FFVII, Flashback), others like Kojima’s Snatcher and Manhunter make a lot more sense. Worth a read if, like me, you scored the collectors box set of the re-release for Christmas and have Blade Runner on the brain. Tracing Replicants [1UP] More »

Senko No Ronde Figure Is Slightly Vulnerable

9:00PM Luke Plunkett | Meet Changpo. She’s adorable. She’s also one of the stars of G.Rev’s super-hard arcade/360 shooter Senko no Ronde, which was released earlier this year and went completely unnoticed by everyone (except Mike). Not to matter. This Changpo figure comes courtesy of – who else – Max Factory, stands 140mm and will set you back ¥5800 ($5US 1) when it’s released in April. From the front, she looks…approachable. From the back? Free Porter PSP Cases*

8:00PM Luke Plunkett | We’ve been pretty down on any and all Porter PSP cases. So you’d be forgiven for thinking we hate them. Real bad. But we don’t! We just hate their price. The cases themselves, they’re great. So this one’s perfect, because it was free*. Well, free so long as you went to Hong Kong’s Asia Games Show and could get a Nissan GTR R35 around a GT5: Prologue track in less than 2:25. Not easy, then, but easier than the alternative: having to explain for the missus you’ll be eating ramen noodles and tea bags for the week because you spent your entire salary on a soft bag for your PSP. The Sordid Truth Behind Itprintsmoney.gif

7:00PM Luke Plunkett | You’ve all seen it a million times. The .gif file featuring Nintendo champions Miyamoto and Iwata-san, sharing a DS, enjoying the spoils of victory. You might think it’s cute. Might find it endearing. Shit, you might hate Nintendo and find it utterly insufferable. Whatever your thoughts on both the .gif and its subject matter, however, you probably don’t know the whole story behind it. More »

Counter-Strike Online’s 170,000-Player Beta Weekend

6:00PM Luke Plunkett | Game Watch are reporting that Counter-Strike Online, Valve and Nexon’s shot at total Asian gaming domination, just enjoyed a successful three-day closed beta. Around 170,000 Korean CS players took a shot at the upcoming, heavily localised, Steam-free version of the classic FPS, which among other tweaks features some new maps and new weapons. CSO is scheduled for release in Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. [Game Watch] More »

Yakuza 3 Trailer Is Long, Wordy

5:30PM Luke Plunkett | The soundtrack seems woefully inappropriate. But everything else, well, it’s looking just fine. Sword-fighting and samurai always go down well at parties, and even those prolonged dialogue sequences should be worth a look-in once they’re in English. Course, at the rate this series is appearing in the West, that might not be until 2012. More »

Metroid-esque HL2 Mod Looks Like…Well, Metroid

5:00PM Luke Plunkett | Before your fanboy glands get too moist, know this isn’t an official Metroid mod. That just wouldn’t stick with Nintendo’s lawyers. But a beam cannon on the arm, armoured female characters, morph balls…it might not be Metroid, but it’s certainly a love letter to Samus and her series. Called Project Valkyrie, it’s a Half-Life 2 mod, and the team are hoping to have it out by March. More pics/info below. [Project Valkyrie] More »

Pre-Order Haze For Your Bonus Drug Paraphenalia

4:30PM Luke Plunkett | Drugs are bad? Don’t tell Ubisoft! Not only will the taking of drugs form a cornerstone of upcoming shooter Haze’s game design, but they’re celebrating the fact with a pre-order offer on their official company store. Buy Haze for the PS3 now and you’ll not only get the game shipped to you on day 1 of its release, you’ll also get a nifty drug-filled syringe. Which is really a pen, but it looks to all the world like a drug-filled syringe. We recommend it as a classy, sophisticated addition to your office stationary arsenal.
