Delivery People See Weird Shit/Tomorrow Will Be Hell/Hyper Multi-Tap

11:40PM August 9, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

To: Crecente From: Ash RE: Fiddy

Man, how the hell am I going to play all these games? I kinda wish the publishers would get together and stagger this stuff a little bit better. Because there’s going to be stuff I miss. A lot of stuff.

It’s been pretty hot here of late. When I work, I put my hair up in a top-knot to keep up and out of the way. My mop is getting a wee bit long, and I really need a cut. So, dinner was pizza, and I go get the door, and I’ve got this ridiculous top-knot. The delivery dude is running through what we order, and it hit me: Still have that silly hairdo, and I’m in my boxers, but the delivery dude doesn’t even notice. He’s probably seen way stranger stuff than foreign dudes with dumb hair in their underwear, no doubt. More »

TimeShift Has A Release Date

11:20PM August 9, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

No lying, this is the real deal. TimeShift, which was originally due for release in 1896 (read: 2005) and has been through 117 platforms (read: 5), might just be on the brink of completion. Sierra have announced that the 360 and PC versions of the game will be out on October 30, with the PS3 version due along in December. Take this news with a grain or two of the finest salt, of course (hey, it’s TimeShift), but if you’re feeling as optimistic as I am today they might just be telling the truth! Might be. No promises, though. TimeShift dated: 360 first – PS3 to follow [CVG] More »

id Software Not Thinking About Unreal Engine 3

11:00PM August 9, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

Doom creator John Carmack and id Software knows game engines. What’s more, the Texas-based developer knows that even if loads of companies are using the Unreal Engine 3, there’s no need to worry. id’s new engine id Tech 5 is a true multi-platformer that can run at 60fps on the PS3, the 360, the PC and the Mac. Still, what does it stack up to the Unreal Engine 3? And does that mean less difference between the various platform versions? id Software’s Steve Nix says: I don’t spend much time looking at Epic’s current offering or what their product line is — we’ve always just done our own thing at id, so we don’t spend too much time thinking about them…

The Fabulous Gaming Sonic Popcorn Machine

10:40PM August 9, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

Here’s the set-up: Some dude visits Osaka. He finds a Sonic The Hedgehog popcorn machine at the Tennoji Zoo. He emails it to game site UK:RESISTANCE, noting, “if I send this information to you in an overly-detailed email, Kotaku will make a post about it next week.” We couldn’t wait a week, so we’re posting it now. Onward! Called “SEGASONIC POPCORN SHOP”, this wonder is a blend of arcade game and vending machine. The dude writes: If I remember correctly (it was a month ago, so surely I can be forgiven for forgetting minor details), you play as Sonic, trying to deliver popcorn to the customer. Robotnik, however, is a dick, and tried to stop Sonic by placing him on a treadmill. You have to make Sonic run faster than the treadmill, so he can jump off the end and deliver the popcorn. You have to make Sonic run by turning the wheel on the front of the machine as fast as you can. The machine I was playing was outside, and the wheel had rusted to fuck, so it made an incredible high-pitched screeching noise as I turned it faster. This only attracted the attention of surrounding Zoo visitors, and made me feel quite uncomfortable in the children’s area of the park.

So a video game occupies the time while your popcorn is popping. Fascinating. The popcorn comes in salt, butter and curry flavours. And it was dispensed in an Anpanman paper cup. There’s even a video of this beautiful machine in action. Find that after the “more >>” More »

SFII Mobile Out Now

10:20PM August 9, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Can’t see how this would work, but Capcom have announced that their mobile version of Street Fighter II is now good to go for the North American market. It’s a bare package too, being the original Street Fighter II with it’s original eight characters and absence of any champion, turbo or hyper fighting. Such a great game on your phone sounds a little neat, but on a narrow screen and with phone buttons? I’ll pass, thanks. If you’re a little more adventurous and fancy a bash, it’s available from Capcom’s mobile site. Street Fighter II Mobile [Capcom] More »

Too Many Ninjas!

10:00PM August 9, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

One thing I’ve learned: You can never have too many ninjas. Pirates, yes. Ninjas, no. Still, there is a flash game called Too Many Ninjas!. It’s annoyingly bizarre little flasher with purple ninjas that is not nearly as great as its own title. Still, I was only able to kill 20 of those little buggers, when I realised there may be too many ninjas, but not enough fun. Too Many [Foddy via Game|Life] More »

Red Ring, Towels and One Busted Robo-Cop Gun

9:00PM August 9, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

Sure, I’ve heard of the “towel trick” used to revive Xbox 360s sporting the Red Ring of Death, but I’ve never actually seen it. Well, now I have! CheapyD from CheapAssGamer provides a step-by-step walk through so you can squeeze a few more minutes days out of your croaked 360 before it craps out again. For those who have already seen or done this, there’s a Robo-Cop gun to keep you entertained. It even breaks. The irony! More »

BBC Are So Releasing A Game

8:30PM August 9, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

The Beeb lied to us! Well, maybe not lie…more of a fib. Despite denying only a few days ago that their talk at the Edinburgh Games Festival had anything to do with them moving into the games arena, turns out they’re doing just that. With a kids MMO. Tronji World, as it’s called, is being developed for the BBC by Nice Tech, is based on the upcoming kid’s series of the same name and should be out early next year. And yeah, that’s all we got. Condemned Movie Not Dead Yet

8:00PM August 9, 2007 | Brian Ashcraft

Details are scant on the Condemned 2 movie tie-in The Unforgettable. The movie was first announced in Variety back in 2005. Scribe Kurt Sutter (pictured) was roped in to pen the move, and at the time he said, “I’m a big gamer, one who feels that, in the last five years, some of the smartest and most innovative ideas have come out of the gaming world.” Not many details have surfaced about the film recently, so game site Sega Nerds contacted Sutter, who said he just closed another deal to do a big script rewrite. A director, he said, is attached and will be announced at a later date. What’s more, Shutter adds: But the project is very much alive (especially after the surprising success of THE 300). In the world of features, a few years to get something into production is the norm… There will be some parallels [to the game] , but it is not a movie BASED ON the game. It’s INSPIRED BY the same source material.

I do like the idea of a movie being based on a game, rather than a game being made into a movie. That seems like a better approach. Sutter Talks Movie [Sega Nerds] More »
