Nike Releasing Arcade-Inspired Dunks

Little garish for my tastes. I prefer more muted, earthy tones on my sneakers. But you can’t beat the inspiration: these upcoming Dunks are being minted to commemorate Atari’s 720°, which for a year or so until Skate or Die was released was the best skateboarding game ever. They should be out sometime next year, no doubt in limited quantities and no doubt to be snapped up by people who’ve never even heard of the game, but think it’s some obscure Gleaming the Cube reference. Worst NES Game Evar Has Awesomest Music

Back in the early 1990′s, now defunct developer Active Enterprises manufactured 1,500 copies of its never released NES game Cheetahmen II. The dev hoped the three Cheetahmen (Apollo, Aries and Hercules) would be the company’s answer to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They weren’t. The sequel is bug infested and almost unplayable, but thankfully, the unsold copies were found in a warehouse for us to laugh and point at. According to a GameSpot review, there are enemies that can neither be killer or avoided. However, the soundtrack is SO GREAT!! Big thing on the Japanese internet right now is remixing that musical awesomeness. “More” after the more.

Nintendo Still Not Keen On Wii HDD

You want to play the presumption game when it comes to the Wii’s storage space solutions, you’re going to get burned. Example: you’d presume Nintendo would be very, very keen on a HDD for the Wii, what with the VC getting bigger and WiiWare due in a few months. But no. NoA PR Manager Eric Walter: …the way that we look at it is, we really don’t want people storing every single game they buy on their drive. When you buy a game, it’s yours forever, so you can delete it, and go back and get it at any time you want. In a way, we liken it to putting music on your iPod; you listen to it for a while, and then you get tired of it, and you pull it off, and you put some new stuff on.

People pull music off their iPods? Really? I know I went out and bought a big iPod so I could just have the songs I paid for and enjoy sitting in the one, convenient spot… Q&A: The State Of Nintendo In 2007 [Gamasutra]

Ceramic White PS3 on Display

Like looking at hardware? Have I got a post for you! At the recent Akihabara Entamatasuri (Entertainment Festival) in, well, Akihabara, Sony kicked off a PlayStation matsuri (festival) that showed off its soon-to-be-on-sale 40GB Ceramic White PS3. Fancy! Love the way the console looks; however, I totally hate the controller. Why didn’t they make the buttons clear or white or something? Standard black makes them look like leftovers.

That after the j-u-m-p.

Sony Predicts Games Unit Losses Will Double

The latest round of financial results for Sony didn’t paint the games unit in the warmest, prettiest light. Next time around, though, it might be even worse. Sony announced today that they’ve doubled the projected losses for the games unit for the financial year (ending in March), the original estimate of a loss of Â¥50 billion chucked out and replaced with an estimated loss of Â¥100 billion. No reason was given for the rewrite, but the Â¥126 billion they lost during the first half of the financial year probably had something to do with it. Melbourne Gets Its eGames On

Kotaku AU

eGames is on again, except this time it’s called eGames 07. If you can figure out why, you’ve taken the first step to being there.

The second step will involve either travelling to Melbourne or, if you happen to live there, catching a tram or walking. Time your trip for November 16-18 while aiming yourself at the Convention Centre, and you have an excellent chance of attending.

Activision will be there in force, with both a Call of Duty 4 LAN and Guitar Hero III. Ubisoft will also have Assassin’s Creed out on the floor a day before it comes out here, so you’ll have the opportunity to be the first to play it in Oz.

Oh, and then there’s Crysis, if the demo isn’t good enough for you.

Looking over the release, I can’t even begin to fathom how one person could enjoy all this in one day unless they’re prepared to ingest stimulants like Tic-Tacs or simply die at the end. Good thing it’s being held over three days, then.

Note that eGames runs practically parallel to the GDAA’s GameConnect event (Nov 15-17), which is just as worthy of your attention, especially if you’re more interested in making games rather than playing them.

If you’re curious for more info, either hit the jump (for the world’s most epic press release) or visit the website.

8-Bit Tie Spotted in the Wild

Kotaku AU

And if by “wild”, I mean “Atomic Live 2007″, then the headline is completely true. While cruising around the World GameMaster Tournmanet section of the expo hall, I came across this chap with the 8-bit tie fitted snugly to his neck.

If you’d like to pick up one of these for yourself, or an equally geeky friend/sibling/yoda doll, there’s an ample supply over at ThinkGeek.

A dashing piece of apparel, wouldn’t you say?

Weekend Note: Home Again… Sort of

To: Ash & Luke From: Flynn Subject: Travel weary

So my long three and a half months of conference travelling is finally over and even though I’m not safely ensconced in my final home (SF) yet, I’m glad to be at least not travelling for a while. It really takes it out of you, especially a gentleman of my advanced years. But you gotta keep up with the kids!

Some things you might have missed this weekend:

• Will Wright says Spore is coming to the Wii

• GameStop stops it’s 360 replacement plans

• IPTV may be coming to the next 360 Dashboard Update

• I was thrilled to have a really good excuse to post this picture

And now I bid you adieu as I head off to Guitar Hero III and the chance to finally play Barracuda. Have a great week!
