So there you are, playing through Assassin’s Creed, which – faux sci-fi trappings or not – is set in the 12th century. Long time ago. Lot earlier than the invention of transforming children’s toys. Or trucks. Which is why it’s a little confusing to clamber up and see this intricately-carved wooden window/doorway thing. A little confusing, and a whole lot of awesome.

These are, believe it or not, the New Zealand commercials for Ubisoft’s cosy little DS music title Jam Sessions. Both are truly magnificent. Neither, however, are suitable for work. The one above features profanity, while the second commercial – after the jump – features a kind of tongue and hand action that’s generally frowned upon.
What’s huge, scary and green?
Yes, there’s the Hulk, but the inflatable Master Chief helmet that was at eGames fits the bill nicely as well. It pretty much was Microsoft’s stand at the event, and despite my prayers for it to be filled with Spartan armour-wearing supermodels, it was sadly empty.
As you can see above, it’s obvious that they share similarities – the white/black duotone; the menacing stance; the even more menacing bladed weapon… you get the picture. Heck, you can see it.
Ignoring the fact that I had to flip the Dark Sector art for symmetry, if someone told me the same art director had been behind both pieces, I’d probably believe them.
What do you reckon?
To: Ash & Luke From: Flynn Subject: Gaming With The Folks
Hello, gents. I am reporting once again from NYC and by the time you read this I will be on a bus on my way to the home of my ancestors (read parents) in Baltimore, MD. Good times! Believe it or not, I’ve packed my PS3 solely for the purpose of finishing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune which I’m really addicted to at the moment. Fortunately, my parents have the Wii I gave them earlier this year so I packed up Super Mario Galaxy as well. Should provide plenty of gaming fun over the next week of Thanksgiving madness. And if that wasn’t enough gaming (and it clearly isn’t) I’m hooking up with a couple of the Destructoid guys for a full day of Rock Band. It’s going to be a helluva holiday I tells ya.
Some things you might have missed this weekend:
King of Kong is coming to DVD
Super Mario Galaxy kicks Ocarina of Time’s ass
Toys R Us is having a killer sale on Wii games
Hope you guys have a great week and I will see you next weekend as I report from the exciting confines of Baltimore. After that I probably won’t see you for a few weeks as I make my long awaited move to San Francisco. Goodnight!
It’s been a banner several weeks for new games and this one is no different. No matter what your taste there is a little something for everyone. Mass effect, Rock Band and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune will be on my holiday play list as I sit in my parents rec room after ingesting too much food. What will you be playing post-turkey time?
Mass Effect (X360) Space, ho!
Rock Band (PS3, X360) Rock out with more than just a guitar.
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3) Relive every great 80′s adventure movie you ever saw.
Unreal Tournament 3 (PC) Get real with Unreal..3!
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (PC) It’s like a buddy movie with killing.
Ghost Squad (WII) Fight the war on terror at home on your Wii
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (DS) More Final Fantasy… more!!
College Hoops 2K8 (X360, PS3, PS2) Next-gen college basketball.
Soul Calibur Legends (WII) The Soul Calibur franchise tries a new style.
Time Crisis 4 (PS3) Shoot those bad guys up. Now with scrolling.
Link’s Crossbow Training (WII) Test out the Wii Zapper Zelda style!
Morning, sports fans.
Actually, going by last week’s competition to give away two sets of Plantronics’ .Audio 770s, we’re all headphone fans. Nothing wrong with that, I say.
To win, all you had to do was post a cool comment on any story. Considering the high levels of creativity out there, we had a great response. Which made it hard to pick just two winners.
Yet, we came to a decision. Two decisions – both of which you can read after the jump.
This little clip was put together by some students for the final project of their Spring 2007 Animation class. For a student made film, it’s got some pretty great moments in it, my favourite being the mushroom eating. Also, the guy in the bowler hat’s sideburns are killer. Having some massive ‘burns of my own, I totally respect the chops.
NaturalMotion is currently working on a new next-gen football game called Backbreaker for next year. One of the features of the game will be the ability to assign your own colors, logos and names to your team’s players. So, to show off the feature, the folks at NM threw together a little Kotaku team featuring our signature pink and green colours and our own Crecente as Quarterback. I don’t know what’s funnier, the pink uniforms or the thought of anyone on the Kotaku team (with the possible exception of Fahey and Luke) playing football.
One of our tipsters sent us a link to GamingSA’s story on Digital Extremes’ Dark Sector, which was being demoed at eGames. I’ll be posting my own impressions this week, but I just wanted to address an error in the story.
Dark Sector, being developed by Digital Extremes, was one of the first … next-generation titles to use the Unreal Engine 3 many years ago, and the first next to Unreal Tournament 3 to make use of the UE3 on PlayStation 3.
Sorry, no. Dark Sector runs on a proprietary engine. That’s straight from DE’s Meridith Braun, who I had the pleasure of speaking to at length when she showed off a video of the game during a promo event for Pariah. Peter Silver from D3Publisher also confirmed this fact again yesterday.
I can understand how you might confuse it with Unreal Engine 3, especially when you consider DE’s close ties with Epic, but it’s definitely the company’s own hard work. I suppose DE could take GamingSA’s comment as a compliment.
