Portable 360 Needs Petrol, Strong Knees

10:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Yes, it’s a working Xbox 360, and yes, it’s actually portable. Though whether lugging around a 60lb rig consisting of cables, PVC tubing, a full-size LCD display, Xbox 360 and a generator is worth the convenience is another matter. Our advice? Leave the 360 at home. That or see if you can wrangle yourself a donkey with a steady trot, because the human spine just isn’t cut out for this kinda shit. [TechEBlog, via Giz]

Wii Accessories Hit New High/Low

9:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Can’t get enough of Wii peripherals. Especially the crummy, unlicensed ones. Like this! This is the Airplane Controller Stand, for both the the Nintendo Wü and Nintendo Waa. Why do we need an Airplane Controller Stand? Why, for the countless Wü/Waa flight games that use both the Wü/Waa Remote and it’s patented nunchuk as pointing mechanisms, silly. Can’t believe you even had to ask that. You’re so silly.

Nike Feel You May Enjoy These Skate Or Die Dunks

8:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Continuing their recent obsession with early skateboarding videogames, Nike will be releasing another set of Dunks based on an early skateboarding videogame. Except this time, instead of the kinda-OK 720°, they’re based on the entirely-rad Skate or Die. Or, more precisely, it’s box art. Shame it couldn’t have just been Rodney’s giant face on a shoe, but I guess Nike have commercial designs for these things beyond our own wildest desires. Sony Banking On Selling 11 Million PS3s By March 08

7:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

The PS3′s start? Slow. Reeeaalll slow. Wasn’t always going to stay that way, though, and as we near the end of 2007, Sony are feeling confident. Bullish, even. Kaz Hirai, speaking with The Yomiuri Shimbun, has stressed Sony are planning on having sold 11 million PS3s by the end of the current fiscal year (in March 2008). Hirai also said Sony want the PlayStation division to “escape as soon as possible from the red and return to the black in fiscal year 2008″, which considering how much money they’re losing at the moment may be a little harder than the 11 million thing. Oh, and remember, Sony now count “sold” as sitting in a customer’s hands, not just shipped to retail, if that helps in your own projections, calculations and wild speculation. Oregan Trail Remake Has More Cars, Less Dysentry

6:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

The Oregon Trail is both entertaining and educational. Sadly it’s also quite old, and in need of an update. An update like Thule Trail, which takes the basic premise of the Oregon Trail but has you and your mates on a cross-country road trip to a festival, and includes truck-stop hookers, dice games, hybrid sedans and whiny hitch-hikers. Thule Trail’s broswer-based, so you can try it out at the link below. Thule Trail [via Independent Gaming]

Great, Now We Don’t Need To Post Another Mario Theme Clip

5:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

via videosift.com Being musical in nature, and given music’s penchant for variety and adaptability, there were always going to be a lot of different ways to play the Mario theme. Some would say too many. We’d say too many. Here, then, is a Youtube-scouring recap, so that we can prove once and for all that, yes, there’s loads of ways you can play the Mario theme, and in doing so never have to post another one ever again. Until someone can harness the clouds and play it with lightning, that is. Or train a chorus of silverback gorillas to bust it out A Cappella. Either of those would be awesome. [via Blues News]

Tretton Tells Activision To Cram It, Stick To Making Games

4:00PM December 17, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Late last month, Activision boss Bobby Kotick issued an ultimatum of sorts. Said the 360 and PS3 needed to get to $US 199, or else. Well, speaking with the San Jose Mercury’s Troy Wolverton & Dean Takahashi, SCEA boss Jack Tretton responded to Kotick’s calls. And by responded, we mean totally call him out: Tretton:…you know, I’m surprised by it, because I would never venture to suggest what software publishers should price their software at. So I don’t think it’s appropriate for them to suggest what hardware should be priced at.

SJM: I guess what he’s calling for is maybe a more nimble reaction to the Wii’s success.

Tretton: I don’t know, maybe he should design a platform.

Oh it’s on. Ringside tickets are $US 25, $US 18 for concession card holders. A Q&A with Sony U.S. games chief Jack Tretton, extended version [Mercury]

Weekend Note: There’s No Place Like Home

2:58PM December 17, 2007 | Flynn De Marco

To: Luke From: Flynn Subject: Charity of the Season

Ahoy! How have you been my fine sir? I am finally relocated to San Francisco and have all my belongings in a storage unit. I might not be completely settled yet, but being back in the city where I lived out the better portion of my adult life is a great feeling.

The road trip was astounding. Saw some amazing things: Graceland, Vegas, roadside attractions and even the Liberace Museum. The Spike VGAs were interesting and seeing some of the people I know from various conferences and such was a nice familiarity in the middle of six days on the road.

Some things you might have missed this weekend:

I met a waitress on my journey whose story greatly affected me and everyone else as well.

This T-shirt on Threadless is awesome. Please vote for it so I can buy it!

This insane auction on eBay got removed a second time.

The first link I posted regarding the waitress and my attempts to find her and her son a Wii for Christmas got an amazing response. I end my first weekend back here amazed at the generosity and kindness of our readers and it’s a great feeling.

And now I take my leave of you to attend a holiday party happening here at my friend’s place. Have a great week. Goodnight! More »

Why The Tiny Text?

Flag
2:00PM December 17, 2007 | Logan Booker

I know I want to buy a high-def LCD TV. It’s instinct more than anything else – a warm, tingling sensation that emanates from my giblets and perfuses my being. It’s like lowering yourself slowly into a steaming hot bath.

If instinct alone wasn’t enough to justify such a purchase, I have a tangible reason as well.

Tiny text.

The first game I encountered with a microscopic font was Capcom’s Dead Rising. So there’s me, with my standard definition yet decently-sized CRT television. And then there’s Dead Rising sitting in the DVD tray of my 360, laughing at me like a hyena on crack as I squinted blood from my eyes.
