Localising Japanese Classics To Extend The PS2’s Lifespan
11:30PM Luke Plunkett | With the PS2’s time in the limelight almost done, development for Sony’s old workhorse is winding up. But people are still buying PS2s! And people who already own them are still playing them! Can these folks count on getting new games? They can, ponder Next-Gen, if publishers fill the gap left by developers switching to 360/PS3 development by porting over some classic Japanese games that, for whatever reason, never saw a Western release. Some suggested titles/series include OneeChanBara, The Sega Ages collections (Virtual On!!!) and Gregory’s Horror Show, which saw a PAL release and is safely on the kooky side of Awesome St. Add the one glaring omission I can see – Super Dimension Fortress Macross – to that list and we’re just about good to go. 1,500 Mexicans Needed for Dragonball Flick
11:00PM Brian Ashcraft | Live in Mexico? Like Dragonball? You’re in luck! The DB movie is looking for extras. No experience necessary! It looks like the cattle call has already commenced. This is actually the coolest news to come out of the Dragonball movie shoot. In an age were all crowds scenes are CG, it’s pretty neat that the producers are using actual people for the shoot. Too bad they seem to be mucking up the rest of the flick. Then again, after the censoring the anime got when it came to the US, this movie should just be par for the course. Six Million Europeans Now Own A Wii
10:30PM Luke Plunkett | The Wii selling 5 million consoles in Japan, that was a big deal. So selling six million Wiis in Europe, which Nintendo Europe have announced as having just happened, well, that is a bigger deal. Especially when you consider how poorly Nintendo treat their European customers! As well as announcing that figure, Nintendo also revealed that they’ve sold 20 million DS handhelds in the territory, which constitutes nearly a third of the 64 million sold worldwide. And finally, to anyone not suitably impressed/dismayed with those numbers: Nintendogs has sold eight million copies. Just in Europe. Wii hits six million sales in Europe [MCV] [Img] More »
Phoney Haruhi Promotes Bejing Olympics
10:00PM Brian Ashcraft | Fugly! This Chinese middle school pamphelet features a crummy Haruhi Suzumiya rip-off. It’s to promote the Bejing Olympics. And since Haruhi has fuck-all to do with the Bejing Olympics, you’d think that the rip-off artists could have done a slightly better job of tracing. You’d think. Though, it might be the fugly part that’s keeping the publisher from getting its pants sued off by Haruhi creator Nagaru Tanigawa. Haruhi China [Enjoy Korea via Canned Dogs] More »
Rumble Kit Makes Your SixAxis Look Silly
9:30PM Luke Plunkett | This is a Vibrating Bag. We know, it’s not a bag, but that’s its real name, so that’s what it’s getting called. You clip it onto the bottom of your Sixaxis and it – apparently – gives you rumble. It also gives you…FM radio, for some reason, along with the bonus feature of making your PS3 controller look like it fell out of 1986. Sure, rumble enthusiasts will have either imported a Dualshock 3 or are happy to wait for a local release, but there’s always someone out there who likes to do things the hard way, and this definitely looks like the hard way. too cheap to buy a ps3 dualshock controller? Wii Hacked?
9:00PM Brian Ashcraft | We’re not so surprised that the Wii has been apparently cracked, but rather, that it’s taken so long. Still! The folks over at forum TehSkeen has figured out an exploit to modify a saved game from Twilight Princess, crash the machine and have been able to run a few lines of their own code. It’s not even necessary to “mod” the Wii console to run this exploit. Don’t freak yet, as it’s only possible to run four lines of code so far. From the TehSkeen: More »
PS3 Overtaking 360 In Europe
8:30PM Luke Plunkett | SCEE boss David Reeves? Totally bullish. He and his pals have got hold of some sales data from European charts trackers GfK and ChartTrack, which indicate that all across Europe the 360 is having a hard time of it against Sony’s PlayStation 3. How hard? This hard: in the key markets of Germany, France, Italy and Spain, the PS3 has now outsold the 360, despite Microsoft’s console enjoying a nearly 12-month head start. At this rate, and barring Sony’s apple cart being unexpectedly overturned, Reeves estimates the PS3 will have outsold the 360 across all PAL territories by the northern summer. Which considering the ever-increasing size and importance of the European market should set a klaxon or two sounding at Microsoft HQ’s secret wartime bunker. SSBB Demo Kiosks Hit Japan
8:00PM Brian Ashcraft | So, Japan *finally* got demo kiosks. Good for Japan. There are tons of YouTube footage of the demo, which we’ve posted after the jump. With the amount of hype this game is getting, I just want it released. Feeling a little SSBB‘ed out. Anyone else? More »
Gordon Freeman’s Bro Saves His Bacon
7:30PM Luke Plunkett | Gordon Freeman is the saviour of the universe, Gordon Freeman is the archetype silent protagonist, Gordon Freeman can still somehow pull off a mid-90s goatee, blah blah blah. Everybody loves Gordon, but what about John? Nobody loves John. Heck, nobody has even heard of John Freeman, brother of Gordon Freeman. Time for that to change. [via Boing-Boing] More »
