The Arcade Flyer Archive Liquidating Collection

1:00PM Flynn De Marco | A few months back I mentioned that The Arcade Flyer Archive, an amazing collection of vintage and new arcade flyers, would be liquidating their collection. They’ve already been through one portion of the sale which we unfortunately missed out on. But never fear, there’s still plenty more to be had. The flyers cover Arcade Video Games, Pinball machines and other types of arcade amusement machines. Everything you need to know about the sale including the list of available flyers, prices and shipping can be found at coinopvideogames.com. These guys have put a ton of hard work into cataloging this amazing collection so help support them by buying a few flyers. They’re going cheap! More »

Alone in the Dark 5 Tech Demo

12:00PM Flynn De Marco | Here we have a nice little piece of tech demo video showing off some of the features of the upcoming Alone in the Dark 5. Our lead character gets all McGuyver-esque, strapping things together with sticky tape to create new weapons or using it to stick things to the ceiling. Pretty crafty! I particularly like the shooting of the corpse to create a blood puddle that will distract the enemies long enough for you to pick them off from a distance. More »

Video Games At the Beijing Olympics

11:00AM Maggie Greene | Not as an actual sport, of course, but it’s going to be an official welcome event: US based Global Gaming League (GGL) has signed a deal to make sure video gaming will be a part of the ‘08 Games, at least in some way. They’re planning a tournament leading up to the games, all sorts of contests, actual competitive gaming, and … more spectators than the actual Olympics? More »

The Patapon BearBrick Vinyl Toy

10:00AM Flynn De Marco | Artist Rolito, the man behind the stylish graphics of Patapon has produced this vinyl toy based on the upcoming PSP game. The toy, which is part of the custom BearBrick series, will be available in stores on Feb. 26th. There’s no word on the price, but given the size and what I’ve seen of other BearBrick prices it should be around $US 5.99 or so. But, don’t quote me on that. Are Games Going To Grow Up?: A Debate

9:30AM Maggie Greene | Speaking of games being juvenile (maybe), Steve Gaynor threw down the gauntlet over at Fullbright with some incendiary comments that were of course going to start a firestorm, and were indeed designed to. His contention? The video games are going to be stuck in the same ghetto as comic books — always marginalized, forever juvenile, doomed to never being ‘a relevant cultural medium’:

Can Game Critics Cheat? Ethics In Reviewing

8:30AM Maggie Greene | Chris Dahlen has an interesting post up on the issue of cheating in video games, in particular whether game reviewers can (or should) cheat. Of course, anyone is capable of cheating their way past a tough spot, but should reviewers be held to a higher standard? Dahlen points out that reviewers who admit to taking shortcuts or blowing past extra features or side quests tend to cause people to throw a fit; on the other hand, is galloping through a game at a blinding pace good for anyone, reviewers especially? Is there any hard and fast rule for this sort of stuff? More »

WWE Produces Familiar Looking T-Shirt

8:00AM Flynn De Marco | Kotakuite Brian P. tells us that the WWE is producing a new T-shirt for one of it’s big stars, John Cena. The shirt features an 8-bit style graphic based on the cover of Nintendo’s classic Pro Wrestling. The back has some different “moves” above some d-pad graphics. The shirt is selling for $US 25 dollars but won’t be officially released until Feb. 25. One wonders what Nintendo is going to have to say about this one. John Cena T-shirt [WWE] More »

IBM Launching Educational MMO For Teens

7:30AM Maggie Greene | In an attempt to convince high schoolrs that math and science are cool (hey guys, they’re not beating down the door to history classes, either), IBM is launching a new, free to play MMO called PowerUp that will challenge players to solve problems involving solar, wind, and hydropower before the environment of a fictional planet is destroyed by mounting crises. Of course, there’s more: More »
