Dyack Drones On About One Console Future

Too Human creator Denis Dyack (right, wearing glasses) has talked about his desire for a one console before. Now, he’s doing it again! This time, he’s going on in greater depth about why one console just makes sense. Or something. He’s like your uncle who drones on and on every Christmas about the time he met Frank Sinatra in Palm Springs. Sorry. We’re being rude, we’re all ears and Denis Dyack, the floor is yours:

Real Mario Is Real Creepy

This is what happens when you take the proportions of cartoon/Nintendo Mario’s face and apply real-world characteristics to it. It was created using Photoshop and a bunch of features from a bunch of real faces. It is currently creeping the shit out of me. Super Real Mario World [Pixeloo, via technabob]

Listen To Boy Massage Moaning

This isn’t sorta why you shouldn’t play DS boy scrubbing title Duel Love on the train, this is EXACTLY why you shouldn’t. Realise: Image-wise, this clip is safe-for-work. Sound-wise? Totally not safe. Do stick around for the hand-slapping finishing move.

Sidhe Talks About Sony’s PhyreEngine

Kotaku AU

PhyreEngine. It’s a funky name, but what the heck is it?

We asked Sidhe Interactive’s sexy technical director, Tyrone McAuley, to help us demystify Sony’s cross-platform tech. Sidhe developed its PSN/Xbox Live Arcade/PSP title GripShift using the engine, so if anyone’s going to know a thing or two about it, it will. Of course, there may be a few deities that know more, but they’re hard to get in contact with, for obvious reasons (we did try).

Hit the jump for the gorgeous text that makes up the interview!

Yes, Future Is Coming To Oz

Kotaku AU

If you needed any more evidence that Future, the publisher of T3, Official Xbox 360 Magazine and Official Windows Vista Magazine is planning its expansion into Australia, then look no further than job site Seek.com.

Tipster Nick spotted this Associate Publisher position in “Inner Sydney” and was kind enough to pass it on.

Recently, Derwent Howard had its licensing agreement for Future’s magazines revoked, and it looked fairly certain that the UK publisher would dive into our congested market with its leading titles in tow.

This pretty much seals the deal.

Wake Me When It’s Over

To: Ash & Luke From: Maggie Subject: Finals week is here again

One of my favourite descriptions of the discipline of history comes by way of E.H. Norman, who spoke of “that peculiar pleasure of reading in the calm of one’s study of turbulent events, of great triumphs and failures or simply of the everyday life of people in bygone ages.” He goes on to say that writing history is “to feel an intimation of man’s immortal spirit.” I think someday I’ll feel like that … in five decades or so, if I’m lucky and survive grad school and ensuing career. Currently, however, my life is a whirlwind of academic chaos and while I’d like to be able to enjoy the particular charm of history in ‘the calm of [my]study,’ duty calls and I’m up to my neck in papers, PDFs, books, and other tools of the trade.

It was a slow weekend around here, but here’s what you may have missed:

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack details due out Tuesday; If you’ve ever wanted a Swarovski-encrusted Wii, you can get one for a mere $US 4,000; Amanita’s made a game for 11 year olds, but even us grownups are digging it; One of the guys behind the Bourne game talks about designing filmic games.

I’m now off to whip up a final paper for my Japanese historiography seminar and then hit the library to get some microfilm viewing in. Outside of that, I have parts of 140 exams to grade on Tuesday and then I’m done for two weeks (minus all the other work still hanging over my head). Hope y’all have a good week.

Krome “Proud” Of Party Animals, Australia Full Of Quality Devs

Kotaku AU

Gamasutra chatted recently with Krome Studios’ Cameron Davis, lead designer of Viva Pinata: Party Animals. While I can’t say I was a big fan of the game, Davis says he was happy with the end product:

I’m very proud of the game. I think it turned out exactly how I wanted it to be. The guys at Microsoft were really helpful, helping us get it done on time. They were happy with it. I don’t know what happened in the marketplace.

Davis also discusses the merits of the Australian developer scene. In the past, he feels the dollar helped coax publishers to our shores but now, the quality of work is what’s tickling the right places:

But ultimately, we just try to do the best quality we can; all the studios in Australia do, and I think that shows. I think it’s regardless of region; that’s become less of a barrier now.

Gamasutra has more with Cameron, if you’d like to hit the link.

Sega Superstars Tennis Trailer

newVideoPlayer("sst_platforms.flv", 520, 390,""); On the fence about which version of Sega Superstars Tennis to grab? Then you’ll “love” this trailer. Get it? Tennis! Not sure if I’m frothing for essentially another go at Virtua Tennis, but maybe I’m just bitter about Shadow and Pudding taking up valuable slots in the roster. At least they got Gilius Thunderhead and Alex Kidd in there. My inner Sega fan is being torn apart by the struggle…
