Game Guns Are Fun Guns, Not Real Guns

You use a lot of real guns in games today. Heck, I spent nearly all weekend playing Call of Duty 4, and am now convinced I can work the assault rifle arsenals of both the American and Russian armed forces. I really can’t though, and Popular Mechanics are here to remind me that despite looking and sounding real, most in-game guns don’t behave like they’re real. Take Rainbow Six Vegas 2, for example. Children Must Learn To Fear Sinistar

Children today, they’re weak. Soft. Unprepared for the horrors that await them out in the big wide world. So it’s good to see that someone is remembering to teach the youth of today that, when confronted by Sinistar, Dick & Jane need to forget that all that skipping and hand-holding and run for their lives (click pic for a bigger version). Darwinia on the 360 is a “possible future release” no more. Developers Introversion have, after the ESRB leak the other day, come out and officially announced the project, which is to be called Darwinia+. You’ll get two games for the price of one: Darwinia, and the multiplayer Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest will be bundled together, and while at the moment that’s all Introversion are saying, quite frankly at the moment that’s all we need to be hearing. Throw Water At Paul McCartney!

Sir Paul McCartney not only got a divorce but a flash game about his divorce. Lucky him! In the game, players take on the role of The Beatles’ ex-wife Heather Mills and try hurling a glass of water at Macca and is lawyer Fiona Shackleton. (Earlier this month, Mills threw water over Sir Paul’s lawyer after being awarded only £24.3 million of the musician’s fortune, saying the attorney had been “baptised in court” for making “unpleasant comments”. Originally, Mills demanded £125 million.) The flash game isn’t a very good game. That’s okay. Mills isn’t a very good person. Play Mucca Chucka [Enterprise via NME]

Shorter Games Are The New Black

Playing games? Easy. Finishing games? Well… Finishing a game takes time. Sometimes, it takes too long. Though, not all games take 35 hours plus. Portal, for example. Portal takes about three hours. So, what does the game’s writer, Erik Wolpaw, think about game length? He thinks this:

New SFII HD Art Shows Stern Faces, Clean Armpits

Udon, longtime SFII and Capcom collaborators, have released some of their character art that’ll feature in SFII HD. Namely, the little portraits that’ll appear on the character select screen. These ones below aren’t little, though. They’re the big versions. Plenty big enough to show that Cammy’s armpits are fully prepared for the extra scrutiny the HD era affords.

Want To Play Windows Games On Mac Or Linux?

Kotaku AU

That’s the aim of Codeweavers’ CrossOver Games software. It’s a special version of the developer’s CrossOver Windows emulator for Mac and Linux designed with gaming in mind. It launches today, at the low, low price of $US 39.95.

Emulation of basic hardware and operating system calls has come a long way in recent years, but graphics has always proved troublesome. While I don’t have experience with the latest iteration of virtualisation and emulation packages, I do know that previous attempts to support gaming have been flaky as all hell.
