Gundams That Could’ve, Should’ve Been

Somewhere along the line, Gundam missed out. Instead of the no-frills RX-178 Gundam Mark-II, there could’ve been much more. Like the boat-shaped Viking Gundam, windmill-bearing Nether Gundam or even the brilliant jester hat-shaped Jester Gundam. Me? I’m quite found of the Matador Gundam. That robo bull nose ring is spectacular. Other Gundams [Neta via Danny Choo]

180-Degree Gaming With The J-Dome

This is John Nilsson’s J-Dome, a projector-based screen that’s the result of some nifty ideas concerning field of vision. Wrapped around you like a lowered umbrella, the J-Dome promises to give the player a whopping 180-degree field of vision, as opposed to the standard 15-20 degrees you enjoy from a flatscreen monitor/TV, meaning you’ll be able to see stuff in the corner of your eye without having to actually point you character in that direction. While the screen itself is a little dorky, the experience looks mighty promising, and is expected to cost around $US 150-$US 200 (excluding projector, obviously). Vid’s after the jump if you’d like to see exactly how it works. Those not interested will still enjoy Nilsson’s salesmanship.

Sonic Is Strange Brown

Silly Sega, Hedgehogs aren’t blue! They don’t wear gloves and sneakers, either!! Here is an artist’s rendition of Sonic — you know, if Sega hadn’t deceptively painted him a different colour. Liars! Says the artist:

In the end I decided to give him a color-pattern that resembles a West European Hedgehog but facial proportions that stick to Sonic himself. His white gloves and the red shoes he kept as another link to the original, but the shoes underwent a little redesign. In addition his body looks like that of a runner, making it more believable that he can run at such high speeds.

Pretty sure we’ll have trouble sleeping tonight. Tomorrow, too. Sonic The Real Hedgehog [essenmitsosse via Sega Nerds]

Wii Fit’s Times Square Ads Need Better Placement

When Reggie said Nintendo would be spending the big bucks on promoting Wii Fit to the great unwashed, he wasn’t fuckin’ around. Go Nintendo reader Charles just snapped this pic while strolling nonchalantly around Times Square, and I must say, that’s pretty darned eye-catching. It’d really make me want to hit the Balance Board and burn some calories, were it not for the fact it’s sitting, well, right on top of a Chevy’s. Sorry, Nintendo, but no way is exercise beating out tacos.

“America Has Always Been Better At Creating Unique Products”

It’s OK, America. You’re not braggers. You’re unique! Despite tossing a waggly cat amongst the dual-sticked pigeons with it’s Wii console, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto says that when it comes to games, Japanese companies aren’t quite as outside the box. “I think America has always been better at creating unique products”, he says. Why? “In Japan, the technology required to create videogames tends to be concentrated in the bigger corporations”, the Nintendo talisman told Wired’s Chris Kohler. Lucky Nintendo’s a big corporation! EB Games Australia Reckons Sept 2008 For Rock Band

Kotaku AU

EA may be staying quiet on the Oz release date for Rock Band, but that hasn’t stopped retailers from closing their eyes, spinning their hands around and stabbing a finger at the calendar.

EB’s the latest to have a go, with its new and improved website offering September 2008 as a possibility. The arse-end of the year is the only hint we’ve had over the last couple of months, so September is as good a guess as any.

Training Sessions For… Nintendogs & Animal Crossing?

Kotaku AU

Nintendogs is the sort of game I never understood the appeal of. If you want to play with, feed and raise a dog, why not buy a real one?

Still, if you, or a friend, is having trouble getting to grips with Nintendo’s puppy simulator, the Australian Centre for Moving Image down in Melbourne is holding a “training session” on May 15 between 6 and 7PM. The session will also include beginner’s help for Animal Crossing.

At the very least, it’s a great way to introduce someone to the DS and the world of casual gaming. Heck, you could even make a date out of it. Maybe. Probably not.

More details after the jump.

Americans Brag, PS3 No Letdown, Kotaku is Wrong

No, no, no! When Hideo Kojima said the MGS4 graphics on the PS3 weren’t to his “satisfaction” or that he realised there were lots of “restrictions” the PS3 posed, he didn’t mean it. He was just trying to be humble, you know! He’s not disappointed with the PS3 at all. He is totally happy with it. The PS3 is awesome. Says Kojima:

On the internet, there’s stuff saying “Hideo Kojima” isn’t satisfied with the PS3. I’d like to talk about that today. I just got back from Paris and did 15 interviews and everyone asked me about it, did I say that. The meaning of what I said has totally been changed, made totally different. Today, I’d like to talk about that. Why did it turn into that? When I’m doing an interview, I answer in Japanese, and I can’t control how the writer will interpret that into English… What I say is then translated in English, and the writer then changes that into their own words and writes that. So, right there, the meaning of what I say changes a lot.
