Video Rental Coming To PS3 Tonight

Sony’s hooked up with Warner, Fox, Lion’s Gate, Disney, MGM and others to bring video rental to the PS3. Video is set to be fully integrated into the PlayStation Store, said Sony’s Jack Tretton at the company’s E3 press event.

A video button in the PlayStation Store will have separate categories for TV and film to choose from, and movies can also be listed by studio. The Eye and Reservoir Dogs were seen in the store during the demonstration, though currently 85 are available for rental in standard definition.

According to PSN’s Eric Lempel, it takes about an hour to download one of the rented films. Price points vary too - $US 15 to purchase, $US 6 to rent in HD, and $US 4 to rent in SD.

The AVC-format videos downloaded to PS3 can also be transferred to the PSP via a USB cable.

The service launches tonight!

    Now the only one missing from this equation is Nintendo. Apple, NetFlix, Amazon, Microsoft and Sony are already at the table. I believe all off HD rentals along with SD rentals.

    If anyone encounters those people living in the ground that say online movie rentals will never take off, tell them what year it is.

    @DevonTheDude: $8.99 you get 1 disk at a time but as many as you want. It might not be all at once but that is still a hell of a lot cheaper.

    @KINGZ: you can get a 250GB 2.5 in HDD right now for about 110 bucks or less. You can get a 1TB external drive from brick and mortar for $259 or get the maxtor 500GB external for $149 or $100 if you take advantage of the sale. Both are supported on PS3

    And MSFT overly criticized Sony for HDMI and 1080p, and they did it anyway.

    I also dont remember them criticizing for the rental service, in fact they have always said they were working on it as well.

    But I could be wrong.
