PS3 Lifecycle Ten Years. Blu-rays’s Five Years?

Sony has mentioned the PS3 will have a ten year life-span over and over again. The company is backing the console for the long haul. Sony has stated that’s why the console uses new technology like Blu-ray. Shouldn’t that mean Blu-ray will have a long shelf life? No, says a Samsung UK exec. (Samsung backed the format during the console war.) Says Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK:

I think it [Blu-ray]has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn’t give it 10.

That’s not to say Samsung doesn’t think the format will do well — but rather, that it won’t have legs. Griffiths added that Blu-ray is “going to be huge… We are heavily back-ordered at the moment. Griffiths doesn’t go into great depth into what he thinks will bring Blu-ray down.

Raving Rabbid Figures, Now Yours To Buy

Earlier this year, Crecente got hold of some delightful little Raving Rabbids figures from Ubisoft. Figures I tried to swipe, before he smacked the back of my hand and sand “no, naughty”. Well fuck you, Crecente, you and your patronising hand-slapping. I’ll just go buy my own, because Ubisoft have announced that the figures – made by NECA – will soon be made available to the public. What’s more, there’ll be five figures available: the four we’ve already seen (Sam Fisher, Prince, Altair and vanilla Rabbid) plus a new one, the screaming/plunger-wielding Rabbid, which you can see (along with the classy packaging) after the jump.

Tecmo And Koei In Talks To Merge

On the heels of rejecting Square Enix’s “friendly” takeover, Tecmo announced a merger with Japanese game maker Koei is in the works. Today, talks between both companies commenced for a tentative merger, and an “Integrated Management Committee” was created. Both companies hope to balance each other’s portfolios — Tecmo is popular in the West with its fighting franchise Dead or Alive and action series Ninja Gaiden while Koei is popular in Japan (and Asia) for its historical hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors. From the statement issued by Tecmo today:

Activision Blizzard Announces Official Guitar Hero: World Tour Pricing

Kotaku AU

Forget about soon… try today! Activision Blizzard has sent through detailed pricing for all Guitar Hero: World Tour SKUs. The rumoured $299 tag wasn’t far off the mark – it’s spot on as far as the complete PS2 bundle is concerned. However, the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii bundles are more expensive… but not by much:

Xbox 360 & PS3 complete bundles: $329.95 Wii complete bundle: $319.95

The standalone game is also respectively priced at $89.95 on the next-gen consoles. Much better than what EA’s throwing around for Rock Band anyway. The release with the prices also came with the following note:

Activision Blizzard operates on a wholesale price model. The recommended retail price points provided above are indicative only. Final retail pricing will be set by individual retailers and can vary to the RRPs shown above.

So if someone’s offering it for craploads more, well, you can give them an earful.

Full pricing after the jump.

Castle Crashers Title Update Is Coming, It’s Coming

Castle Crashers is great. So much fun. Sadly that fun is often tempered by serious technical glitches in the game, from wonky online connectivity to stuff like erasing your entire game progress. It’s annoying, yes, but The Behemoth promise (cross their hearts!) that a fix is on its way.

We just got off the phone with Microsoft and we had a great talk about updating Castle Crashers, YES!! Looks like we’re on our way to getting this title update out and the bigger issues like saving and online connectivity resolved, in addition to other bugs that have been reported.

Unfortunately that’s as precise as they get, saying they “don’t have a specific time frame yet” for when we can expect the release, but it can’t be too far off. Can it?

‘Final’ Doesn’t Mean Last, Yo

There isn’t a “Final” Final Fantasy. Square Enix keeps going, churning those FF games out — endlessly! The first Final Fantasy was apparently named so because of Square Soft’s financial troubles. The game was a smash hit, and Square Soft (and later, Square Enix) continued to make Final Fantasy games with no end in sight. What gives? Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto says:

Prinnies Get A Chance To Shine

Witz! You there? Course you’re not there. You’re unconscious, lying dangerously face-down amidst a pool of your own fluids. As no doubt thousands of other Prinny fans are at the news that Disgaea’s iconic penguin doods are set to star in their own game. Called Prinny: Ore ga Shujinko de Iinsuka?, it’ll see you take control of a “1,000-Prinny squadron on their quest to help an extremely pissed-off Etna recover her stolen sweets”, and is due for release on the PSN on November 20. That’s in Japan, at least, as your guess is as good as ours as to whether this’ll see a US release or not.

Noel Gallagher Says Guitar Hero Is Better Than Arse Goblin Humping

Besides writing songs and playing for British rock band Oasis, Noel Gallagher is a walking quote machine. So, you’d think he would have an opinion on something like Guitar Hero. Well, he does: If it puts little plastic guitars into kids’ hands and fires their imaginations, I think that’s a good thing. It’s harmless fun, innit.

I’d rather that genre of video games than somebody getting their fucking head chopped off with a samurai sword while getting fucked by a goblin up the arse with a laser. Do you know what I mean?

Um…
