Last week’s Famitsu announced that Phantasy Star Zero was coming to the Nintendo DS. The game’s characters are designed by Toshiyuki Kubooka (THE iDOLM@STER), and the scenario is mystery novel writer Teru Arai and former PSO quest honcho Tooru Shiwasu. The up-to-four-player game features multi-player over Nintendo WiFi. The chat system even supports stylus sketches. Have a look at these screens in the gallery. Yeah, Activision are currently making a “DJ Hero” game, but they’ve been trying to get one made for years. Problem being that, unlike rock music, a lot of dance and hip-hop music is a licensing rights nightmare thanks to copyright laws regarding the use of sampling (not to mention the fact the game will encourage you to create your own mixes). So for the longest time, it looked like a “DJ Hero” game was nothing more than a pipe dream. That was until Activision went and merged with Vivendi, however, giving them access to Universal’s record label catalogue. Making the copyright stuff a little less tough. Wonder how big a role this project played in discussions between the two companies?

Japanese arcade title Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is getting a console release — a Wii console release. On December 11th, the game is slated to come out in Japan. The game pits Capcom characters against Tatsunoko anime characters. The Wii version will feature an original challenger: Tatsunoko anime sneezing genie Hakushon Daimaou. Interesting to note that Tatsunoko is handling the character endings. The game is currently 70 percent done, and the Wii version will have more fighters. The arcade version should be out in December as well.
Thanks MarkMan!
Yesterday, we reported on Activision’s plans to “monetise” the Call of Duty franchise, starting with “Day 1 Advantage” DLC for Call of Duty: World At War. People were not impressed. Today developers Treyarch have responded to the people, assuring them (you? us?) that things aren’t anywhere near as nefarious as they sound. Day 1 Advantage is a promotion that Activision is running with GameStop, where pre-order customers will get a high-level gun without having to unlock it, while anyone picking up the collector’s edition will get an exclusive SMG. Giving both of them, yes, a day 1 advantage. They also made clear there would be no Day-1 DLC offered for the game, despite yesterday’s claims by Activision that there’d be “two-tiered” DLC for sale. Sounds like Activision’s suits need to brush up a little on both their details and terminology.
Leaked scans from this Friday’s Famitsu has a big feature on Wii title Monster Hunter 3: tri. While the game isn’t yet dated, it will be playable at TGS and it does feature new, yet unnamed monsters. The game, like its PSP predecessors, looks poised to be a big hit for Capcom in Japan. Wonder about elsewhere…

Beyond Good & Evil was great, yet largely ignored. There’s a sequel coming, but since the first one was – yes – largely ignored, Ubisoft might have an uphill struggle on their hands convincing millions of people that this game is a good idea. So this strategy, while still unconfirmed, certainly makes a lot of sense. A Canadian GAF poster spotted this ad at his local EB Games, advertising a BG&E Greatest Hits reprint for $10. With a release date of September. Like we said, it makes sense, but we’re still slightly sceptical; we’re already halfway through September and this is the first we hear of it? Kinda defeats the point if you’re not marketing it. And with the sequel still possibly years away, why re-release it now?

Here’s a feel-good story for the day. Castle Crashers has now found its way into 250,000 homes, an incredible number considering the scope of the project and the fact it’s still a litle broken. Just goes to show what fun times can do for a game. Now that the good news is out of the way, time to move on to the obligatory “when’s it being patched” info. Lead artist Dan Paladin has told Gamasutra that while there’s still no expected release date for an online patch, the team are working through Microsoft’s certification process, and that they “really appreciate everyone’s patience and support”.

The Level 5 developed PS3 exclusive White Knight Chronicles has finally been dated: The game will be released in Japan on December 25, 2008. The RPG follows the relationship between a girl and a hero named Lenard who transforms into the White Knight. In an interview with Famitsu, Level 5′s Akihiro Hino states that “game development isn’t over yet” and “this is the biggest game Level 5 has ever developed.” About the PS3, Hino added:
This is the first, big RPG that the PS3 has been waiting for.

Wondering what that mysterious, new instrument was going to be for Guitar Hero: World Tour? Don’t bother, it’s not an instrument. But don’t be glum, chum. It’s something even better. Certain versions of the game (we’ll get to that in a minute) will allow you to transfer MIDI tracks from a PC into the game, allowing you to easily create (or import) your own songs. Which sounds great! So what’s the catch? This feature will only work across all instruments on the PS3. For the 360, they can only do the drums, thanks to “unspecified hardware issues”. Man, it’s just not the 360′s day today, is it?
