Show Us Your Tats

Two more readers have decided to permanently mark their bodies to show how much they love gaming (and wearing sleeves for job interviews).

The first — Jim Osterhout — had his Fallout tat done back in 2005. A stylish, almost calligraphic, Vault Boy in black ink with yellow and red highlights (and a bonus penguin). Jim informs us that he has taken to telling non-gamers that it is a picture of him.

Secondly, Adam Zweig sent pics of his impressive, full-colour sleeve tattoo featuring “Sonic, Shy-Guys, Paper Mario, Poe, Ghoul, Nel from Star Ocean, C&C Renegade Dead 6 Logo”. Bet that hurt.

iPhone Game Development Can Make You A Quarter-Millionaire!

Remember Trism? It’s the clever triangular puzzler from Steve Demeter of Demiforce, a Bejeweled-style iPhone app that uses the hardware’s touchscreen and accelerometer for innovative play. Well, that little five dollar game has made Demiforce a cool $250,000 since its July release; not bad for someone who isn’t Sega and comes armed with pre-established franchises like Super Monkey Ball. Start whipping up your apps quickly, kids, while the gettin’ is still good — and make sure you don’t make any Atari clones.

Pretty Lady To Voice Black Cat In Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Activision revealed more of the voice cast for the upcoming Spider-Man: Web of Shadows today, announcing that Tricia Helfer, who is pretty and best known for her work on Battlestar Galatica, will perform voiceover duties for the Black Cat. Helfer, seen being attractive in the above headshot, had previously played the role of Black Cat on the animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Helfer’s nerd cred was leveled up last month when she spoke at NVIDIA’s NVISION 2008 conference. Things in this post not about Tricia Helfer and her physical appearance are new screens of Web of Shadows, including this poorly angled shot which should probably be the basis of a Kotaku After Dark Photoshop contest.

Ultimate Band Impressions: A Peripheral-free Rock Band?

Saying “peripheral-free” is like saying “castrated” when it comes to music games. Isn’t half the fun of playing Rock Band the plastic instruments?

But there must be market for people (parents) who don’t want to deal with a plastic drum set and two guitars cluttering up the living room – and for these spoilsports comes Ultimate Band on Wii.

Shotgate: Portal Clone For The (Yes!) Commodore 64

Get me Valve on the phone. Tell Lombardi that the Portal prequel dev team can go home – their services are no longer required.

And yes, that Portal fan mod can sling its hook too. The Commodore 64 remake ‘Shotgate’ has rendered both games utterly pointless.

Yes, it’s a Portal clone for the C64. No, it’s not in 3D and – yes – it does look quite like that Flash tribute from last year.

This little fella was made in just 4K of C64 assembler for the Mini Games Comp 2008. If you like the look of it, the programmer is actually selling it in C64 cartridge form in a limited edition run of 20. Buy now to avoid/ensure disappointment.

Is Spawnpoint Studios A New Halo Developer?

According to job listings dug up by Gamasutra, Microsoft Game Studios has a new internal development studio — or at the very least, a newly renamed internal development studio. Spawnpoint Studios has put the job feelers out there in search of programming talent, wooing possible new hires with the potential to work with “a very strong team, currently responsible for Gears of War 2″ who will be “starting a new project in a start-up like environment.”

Gamasutra theorizes that this new team may be hard at work on one of the currently unannounced Halo universe projects, the one that isn’t Halo Wars, Halo: Chronicles and whatever Halo thing Bungie is rumoured to be working on. We’re not sure how they came to this conclusion, other than the “spawnpoint” in the team’s name and the unknown ownership of the fourth Halo “thing,” but maybe they know something we don’t know.

No More Rare Revivals For Now

It’s time for Good News/Bad News.

Good News: Rare’s senior animator, Elissa Miller, says that the company has no plans to revisit any more of its classic titles at the moment. “We’ve always got to have a reason to revive a franchise, we don’t do games just for the sake of them,” said Milller, speaking to 360 Gamer. Yay originality!

Bad News: This means no chance of revisiting some of the awesome games right at the back of Rare’s Retro Cupboard. The ones in the dusty shoebox labelled Ultimate Play The Game.

I could give two figs for a new Banjo Kazooie game, but a next-gen Sabre Wulf, Head Over Heels or Gunfright? Now we’re talking.

How to Build Your Own Xbox 360 Avatar

If you were worried about how the Xbox 360 avatar creation system was going to work, don’t fret. Major Nelson has made this video showing us what we can expect when the fall update hits. It actually looks really solid with some very amusing animations. Now the only question is when can we expect to be making Mii’s quirky representations of ourselves? Something tells me it might be in November, but hey, you never know.

Square Enix today confirmed retail rumblings we’d heard from the recent GameStop Expo, announcing that the remake of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the Game Boy Advance will be hitting the PlayStation 2 later this year. Full details can be enjoyed in press release format after the jump, with a not-quite-done-yet official site going up today.

Microsoft Splurging Millions On Xmas

No, not just on Steve Balmer’s Xmas stocking (he is getting hundreds of Zunes). Microsoft are preparing for a full-on Xbox marketing blitz this Christmas.

Microsoft UK’s Regional Director Neil Thompson told MCV that the recent price cuts are just the start of their holiday season campaign and that Microsoft are ready to spend big to ensure the Xbox 360 comes out on top,

“On marketing we’ll spend tens of millions[of pounds]- we’re going to engage in a very bold promotional push from now until Christmas.”

Thompson promised that (in the UK at least) there would be no console shortages this year saying that he had been “very bullish on supply.”
