There are things Dude Huge likes and things Dude Huge hates. Plastic guns for example, Dude Huge loves plastic guns. Just look at DH’s face. Things he hates?
I hate the fucking controller. I’m sorry, I can’t stand the PS3 controller. I love the Blu-ray player… I think there are some great games for PS3. I think Metal Gear‘s great. Heavenly Sword was great. But at the same time, right now, I’m always working on Xbox with Gears… I’m pretty comfortable with 360. I like its controller.
And it likes you too, Dude Huge.

In 1986, I got the original Pirates! for Christmas. It was smiles all round. In fact, I think 9 out of 10 things I asked for that year were C64 games. Twenty-two years on and little has changed, with a survey by Weekly Reader Research finding that 90% of kids aged between 8-17 want video games for Christmas. The most popular games were Guitar Hero: World Tour, Rock Band 2 and Mario Kart, while breaking down into gender-specific preferences, more boys are asking for Star Wars: Force Unleashed, while more girls are opting for DDR. Italian horror filmmaker Dario Argento (Suspiria, Deep Red) is doing voice work for EA’s scary sci-fi title Dead Space. According to EA, the director lent his horror know-how in actively creating character Doctor Kyne. Here’s the catch: His voice work will only appear in the Italian version. That’s good for those who understand Italian, but not so good for those who don’t. Still, it’s neat to see Argento lend his name to the project. Don’t think we can master the Italian language in time for the October 14th shipdate.

Or, at least, shoot her in the throat. As for the other screens, they’re a selection of real, in-game shots, so what you see here will be what you see when the game comes out. And what we see here – lazy sunsets as we drift lazily down a river – looks gorgeous. There’s a few screens below, with plenty more at the link underneath.

Apparently not John Welch, CEO of casual games company PlayFirst. He says that the console per se is a “niche platform” and that they’re just too expensive to make. His argument:
I think the biggest proof point in the death of consoles in my thesis is the Wii. The most successful, most difficult to acquire console in this generation is at least a generation old in hardware. The advances are in software and peripherals. Why do you need a box for that? If the real expansion is occurring because of what Nintendo has done, why do we even need a console? The technology could be adapted to run on your average set top box, at least in the next generation of set top boxes.
Welch does concede that console are more streamlined and easier to use than, say, PCs. His crystal ball gazing is more along the lines of Google-type cloud that doesn’t even use hardware at all. Agree? Disagree?

And we’ve finally got around to counting the votes for our Tales of contest. We cannot say enough how amazed and dazzled we were by all the entries. Much love to all who entered. The winner, picked by Kotakuland, gets a copy of Namco Bandai’s Tales of Vesperia.
Hit the jump for the winner. Do it.
Know this, humans, Gears of War 2 won’t be a short game. It’ll be a long game. One you play for “months, if not years to come”. So says Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski, at any rate, who also says that because of the amount of time you’ll spend with it – thanks to the longer campaign and multitude of multiplayer modes – it’s no longer a “game”. “It’s no longer a game: it’s a platform. Each mode is huge”, he told VG247. And he should know! Dude Huge knows huge when he sees it.

Last month, Eternity’s Child creator Luc Bernard announced on his official blog that he was leaving the video game business. “I’ve got enough problems in my personal life to do another game after Eternity’s Child,” Bernard wrote. Wrong! Luc Bernard has now apparently told game site Wiiware World that he’s quit quitting. Besides announcing that Eternity’s Child won’t see a WiiWare release until later this year, Bernard is working on Eternity’s Child 2: Retro Child, a WiiWare title slated for mid-2009. Eternity’s Child 2: Retro is based on the cancelled GBA game he was working on and uses traditional side-ways Wii-mote held, button pushing controls. Development for this title is already underway.

Hey, remember that AC/DC-themed version of Rock Band we told you about a few weeks ago? According to the NY Times, it’s due to be formally unveiled by MTV tomorrow. And what’s more, it’s to be formally unveiled with a hefty caveat. Like, it’s only going to be available at Wal-Mart. So Rock N Roll! Officially branded AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack (most likely featuring tracks from their Castle Donington show), the expansion is (as we also told you a few weeks back) one piece in a massive marketing move by the band’s label, Columbia Records, which will see special AC/DC “areas” set up in each of Wal-Mart’s stores, selling not just the expansion, but AC/DC’s new album and all kinds of merch.
Why the exclusivity? Surprise: it’s all about the cash money. MTV’s Van Toffler:

Like most big Hollywood movies, the makers of the Dragonball flick are planning a video game… based on the movie. But there are already tons of good Dragonball games that are, you know, based on the anime/manga. Regardless! Twentieth Century Fox has a new Senior Vice President of New Media Licensing who’s drawing up a list of Fox flicks that could turn into video games. Included in that list is apparently movies like the upcoming Avatar from James Cameron along with Dragonball from some dude. If you think actor Justin Chatwin looks strange as Goku just wait until he’s mocap’d for your 3D gaming pleasure.
