So, How Much Did EA Spend Marketing Madden 09?

10:20PM Luke Plunkett | Contrary to popular belief, Madden does not sell itself. Some people need convincing it’s an improvement over last year, some people need reminding it’s time for a new Madden and some, like myself, need convincing it’s any better than NFL2K5. In order to get the word out (the word being “BUY MADDEN”), then, EA need to spend money on advertising. And they spend a lot. For Madden 09, for example, they spent over $US10 million on marketing. For one game. $US5.5 million alone was spent on cable TV advertising. Guess an email just reminding everyone “hey, new Madden is out” can’t get the job done. More »

Empire: Total War: The Expensive Edition

9:30PM Luke Plunkett | Where would a new, big-name game be these days without an expensive collector’s edition? It wouldn’t be a new, big-name game, that’s where it would be. Feels like these things aren’t a bonus any more…they’re now a right of passage. And so we come to Empire: Total War’s attempt to come packaged in a bigger box with a higher price tag. Called the “Special Forces Edition”, there’s no gold-plated musket, no George Washington action figure, no game case in the shape of a surgeon’s hacksaw. There’s just a map. A big map. Oh, and a range of elite units that you don’t get in the regular edition. Were I Sega’s expensive edition teacher, this would be marked C-, with “this is not 2004, must try harder” scrawled at the top of the box. More »

Radio Station Sells Soul To Nintendo

8:30PM Luke Plunkett | Sydney radio station 2UE are one of the biggest radio stations in Australia. And a reasonably respected one to boot. So it’s a little strange/sad to see that, for the next three weeks, the station have changed their name to 2U-Wii. GET IT. This isn’t a throwaway joke, either; every logo and watermark on the station’s website bears the new, temporary 2U-Wii logo. 2UE: More »

So, How Much Did Obama Spend On In-Game Advertising?

7:45PM Luke Plunkett | Barack Obama has a lot of money. A lot of money. Delaying the World Series don’t come cheap, yo. But while his big primetime address has cost something in the region of $US3-4 million, some of his other recent campaign ads have been a little on the thrifty side. Like his in-game ads. Appearing in Burnout Paradise (and 17 other games), they didn’t cost millions. Didn’t even cost hundreds of thousands. In fact, they only cost the Presidential front-runner $US44,465.78. Or, in relative terms, peanuts. Obama’s in-game ad bill: $44.5K [GameSpot] More »
