Time Announce Top 50 Inventions Of 2008, One Game Makes List

3:30PM Luke Plunkett | Time magazine, masters of the high-brow “top XX” list, are back this week with their take on the top 50 inventions of 2008. The vast majority of them don’t apply. To us, at any rate. We don’t really cover the retail DNA testing industry, or the daily comings and goings surrounding the (awesome) global seed vault. No, we do games, so we’re interested in the one, single video game that managed to make the list. And that game was…wait for it…yes, Spore, which came in at #20. Dubbed “the everything game” by the magazine, calling it “blasphemy, brilliance or both”. More »

Rock Band Getting More Localised (ie Non-American) Songs

2:30PM Luke Plunkett | Just like SingStar has done with great success, Harmonix are now looking at increasing the number of localised tracks on the world’s various Rock Band stores. That means more British bands, more German bands, more Swedish bands, more Australian bands, etc etc etc. Speaking with GameStop, Harmonix’s Dan Teasdale (who is Australian, hence the Aussie slant on this) says: More »

Hey Dummy, Don’t Microwave The DSi (And Other Nintendo Tips)

2:00PM Brian Ashcraft | Hands down, Nintendo Co., Ltd. has the best instruction manuals on this spinning blue orb we call Earth. The DSi manual is no exception. It politely advises things like don’t drive and play DSi, don’t stab the DSi with a screwdriver and don’t throw the DSi away with burnable trash. Better take notes, this is all very, very important stuff. More »

Oh Look, More Halo 3 Figures

1:40PM Luke Plunkett | Can’t tell you just how many Halo 3 figures this is from McFarlane. We’ve lost count. We can tell you, though, that for the first time in a long time, this is a new figure. Not a repaint, not an old figure with new weapons, it’s all new. And it’s a UNSC Marine, who comes with a battle rifle, a pistol and a trip mine. Should be out in March 2009, along with the other repaints/reissues in the gallery. More »

EA Takes A Wall Street Hit, Other Pubs Follow Suit

1:20PM Luke Plunkett | This global financial mess keeps on playing havoc with games publishers. Over the past day a number of companies have seen their share price take a hit, the biggest loser being Electronic Arts, whose shares have dropped 17.1%. Guess losing a ton of money and sacking 600 people doesn’t look particularly good to investors. Activision also saw losses, though not on the same scale (down 2.8%), while THQ’s were also down slightly. Amazingly, Midway’s shares closed up. Midway. Crazy, crazy days. More »

This Is How The DSi Launches

1:00PM Brian Ashcraft | It’s 7:00am and there’s only one guy in front of Yodobashi Camera in Osaka’s Umeda. He tells me he’s waiting for the DSi, points out that he’s first in line and adds that he just got here. That’s it? Only one guy waiting for the DSi? More »

Resistance 2 Takes 420 Hours To Complete*

12:40PM Michael McWhertor | * And by complete, we mean complete complete. Sony says — and you may already have heard this figure tossed around — that there’s some 420 hours worth of play time in Resistance 2 required to unlock everything. More »

So, How Much Faster Do 360 Games Load After An Install?

12:20PM Luke Plunkett | Perhaps the best new feature of the New Xbox Experience is the ability to install 360 games to your HDD. Least, it is for me, since my console’s DVD drive sounds like a Blackhawk trying to take off. But the advantages don’t stop with a reduction in noise, they extend to faster load times. Just how much faster? MTV threw a few vids together to demonstrate. It’s quite a lot faster. More »

12:10PM Luke Plunkett | So, Ash, how’s that DSi launch coming along? – Yodobashi Camera was a bust. No dice. Sure, it was the middle of the night, but still, not dice. The following day, Bic Camera’s looking more promising for our man in Japan, if only because there’s at least 59 other people there waiting to pick one up. More »

Welcome Home: Hanging Out PlayStation Style

12:00PM AJ Glasser | Is it me, or is gaming relying more and more on social media networks? Time was, gaming was this dirty, solitary habit you did in your mum’s basement or in a darkened corner of your dad’s study. You didn’t talk about it, you didn’t brag about it, and (even if you wanted to), you couldn’t show off your gaming accomplishments. More »
