US Army To Test Artificial Intelligence In MMOs

The US Army are working on fake soldiers, that are, to dumb the science down a pinch, holographic projections imbued with artificial intelligence. These fake troops can then be used for stuff like training exercises. Anyway, to test the AI for these holo-soldiers, the Army wants to set them up in games like World of Warcraft and Eve Online. They figure that if the AI – which can be designed to speak in local slang and make human conversation – can pass for human in the online realm, they’ll be on the right track. Hopefully the AI doesn’t act too human, and end up quitting the army, moving in with its parents and blowing 19 hours a day grinding away on WoW.

Super Obama World

Whew, the election is over, and even here in Oz we are nursing a bad election hangover. America has elected a new commander-in-chief, and his face is being stamped on commemorative mugs and dinner plates, as well as flash games. Super Obama World has the President-Elect hop through the great frozen state of Alaska. Beware the lipstick pigs and Saks Fifth Avenue clerks!

Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead Advertising Kicks It Up A Notch

Gone are the days an EGM cover and some developer diaries did enough on the marketing front to get a game some money. These days, publishers need to try a little harder. Dig a little deeper. Namely, do what Bethesda and Valve/EA have done with their big holiday releases. Bethesda took out the entire back page of the New York Times for a classy Fallout 3 ad. Which can’t have been cheap. Valve/EA probably went one better, however and sticking with the New York theme have put up this enormous Left 4 Dead banner overlooking Times Square.

Saints Row 2: Two Million Served (Well, Shipped)

THQ’s financial results today were pretty glum. But there was one piece of good news tucked in amongst the studio closures and money losses: Saints Row 2. It was announced that the game has shipped over two million copies worldwide since launch. We know, that’s shipped, not sold through to customers, but even if half the copies in the world are languishing unsold, that’s still a million sales. Not bad considering we’re still only around six months into the post-GTA IV era.

How Many Copies Will Res V, SFIV Sell?

Let’s ask Capcom! As a follow-up to the financial results disclosed yesterday, Capcom have released some internal sales projections for their major upcoming titles. Those titles big enough to warrant a mention are Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil V, Bionic Commando and Dead Rising Wii. For Res 5, they’re thinking they’ll sell around 3.2 million copies. For Street Fighter IV, a very conservative 1.7 million. For Bionic Commando a slightly optimistic 1.5 million, and for Dead Rising Wii, a pie-in-the-sky figure of 500,000. Be sure to check back this time next year, see if their crystal ball-gazing needs some work.

What New Games Excite Dude Huge

There are tons of big games coming out. (There always are!) Gears of War 2 designer Dude “Cliff Bleszinski” Huge gives a laundry list of what’s on totally awesome radar: Fable II looks cool. And Resident Evil 5 is next year, right? I’m dying for that, I loved RE4. Street Fighter IV looks sick, and Dead Space also looks solid. I’m a fan of horror games — I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they’re making Dead Space for guys like me. That’s my genre, and it looks great.

I think Mirror’s Edge will be great, too, but they’re showing me too much parkour, I want to see the gunplay. I hope it’s not all just running and jumping. As long as there’s something chasing me…even Mario had Goombas, you know?

Miyamoto In A Bluegrass Band, Jams In Fields

When Shigeru Miyamoto said music was a big hobby of his, dude wasn’t lying. We all know he plays the banjo, but what many of you may not know is just how much he plays the banjo. Speaking with GameSpot Germany, the Nintendo man has revealed that he plays in a bluegrass band, and each year they “attend a jamboree where several hundred people camp out for a few days and we have a large jam-session.” Wonder, then, that Wii Music went for dog suits and cheerleaders instead of ageing hippies and grassy fields. Your R4 Cart So Will Not Work In A DSi

The camera and bigger screen and internety stuff may look good during a product announcement, but Nintendo probably have an altogether different reason for pushing the DSi onto the market. One related to their burning hatred of the R4 cartridge. As this video above shows, the trusty R4 won’t work in the new DS handheld, nor will a ton of other similar devices. Of course, this won’t stop new, improved models of those carts from being developed, but for now, you might want to hold onto your DS/DS Lite.
