Imagine if they made a remake of FF7 it would be like 120mil by next year. I still would prefer a proper remake of FF6 over FF7 anytime.

To be fair, Final Fantasy as a franchise reinvents itself more than most franchises. It's more a marker of "Newest Flagship RPG from Square" than any actual sign of continuity.

With those kind of numbers, you can rest assured there will NEVER be a 'final" Final Fantasy.

@Saint Anima: I'd love a DS remake of FF6. It's my favorite of the series (FF7 is probably 4th or so) and I really enjoyed the first 2 DS remakes (FF4 especially). They already did a GBA remake, and yeah, the PSP remakes look nice, but at this point, it would just be more of the same. A DS remake would allow it to be remade again and allow them to change just enough of it for me to buy it again and for it to feel more like a new game.

YES it is the highest selling Final Fantasy game of all time, however it only came out on the Playstation 1 with no real subsequent re-releases (no, the PC version doesn't count, though it is included in that 10.5 sales figure), so for it to sell that many is amazing in itself.

In fact the only games to ever surpass the 20 million sold mark are few and far between, the original Super Mario Bros and Pokemon blue/red being some of the only ones. I know Nintendogs is getting up there too..

@oldboy313: I think VI is probably the most conservative pick for "best FF game" and it might be my favorite, too. But I also really love XII but a lot of people hate it. After that I'd say VII and IV, then maybe X and V. VIII seems to be really really loved by certain people and I can KINDA see why... you'll like it if you love messing with numbers and twinking and figuring out systems to max out your characters. That's sorta how V is, too.

Total sales to date are around 430k... Which is still pretty low, considering the game's caliber and quality. A European release sure would help that, though.

@notquitedeadyet: Dragon Quest 8 is pretty amazing, I highly recommend it.

The sales figures for TWEWY make me really sad. It may only be one game that didn't see a European release, but it's easily the best game on the DS, with some of the most fun, intriguing, and engaging gameplay and storylines of any RPG in recent history (and probably not-so-recent history, as well).

It only sold about 81k in Japan, and about 49k in the US.

@MellowJade: The game is great anyway. And I know no girl who wants to touch it but alot of guys who are playing the crap out of it.

If somebody went back and showed Sakaguchi and co. these figures back in 1987, they'd probably never believe their last-ditch effort to help Square stay afloat would evolve and become what it is today (and surpass the franchise it was in competition with as well).

Final Fantasy truly is an incredible franchise that deserves it's success (even if it has produced a few games I'd like to forget).

I think what many fail to realize that even with the spin-offs and the couple sequels, Final Fantasy re-invents itself with every version. New world, new characters, new abilities, new battle system. There's a ton of work that goes into each of these games and it shows with every new one.

Before they made sequels/prequels, imo, the name of the series really fit. Each game was the first and final look at a new world. A "final fantasy" of that world of sorts.

I know I'd get called a fanboy, but I care not. Since I rented FF2(US) back in 1991, I've loved this series. Truth be told, no other series in gaming has given me more joy than Final Fantasy. I know I have, at least, 10 of those millions up there. ^_^

P.S.- Though, I'll admit the FF7 fans do annoy me =P FFIV is my favorite, imo. Kain Highwind and Golbez > Sephiroth any day! ^_~

I know every one wants a Remake of FFVII but I really would like a remake of FFVIII more. Why I think it never got the credit it was do. Every one liked VII even me so when VIII came out every one thought it would be more of the same and it was not and so it got the bad name it got.

Now if SE ever makes a remake of VII they will make a killing in money. I hope after that one they would make VIII then. Plus if SE wanted to make a remake of IX that would be good too. Even more so if they characters are not cartoons any more but more life like.

@Toasticus: The first 5 games had almost the same exact story. A group of "chosen" kids are born to find the crystals and save the world! They just changed the names of the characters and tinkered a little with the class system.

I'm not knocking the games, because I love them (well, OK, I'm not that fond of II or V). But reusing the same basic plot isn't really reinvention. Unless you want to argue that the crystals are a continuing theme like chocobos, mogs, etc. But I wouldn't put them on the same level since the crystals are the impetus of the story and the rest is just decoration.

And the combat system doesn't change THAT much. It's all sort of the same basic set up. The later, more recent games have really attempted to pump some innovation into the Attack/Magic/Summon/Flee system. But the early stuff kind of blends together, in my opinion. Though I still think they're good games.

@Kent: This is the problem Square Enix finds itself in, alas. People complain that they milk their main franchises too much and don't do anything original, but when Square Enix releases new IPs and original titles, which is quite often, they don't sell nearly as well.

You know.... It's a freakin' hard game. It's a brilliant game, I agree. I played the shit out of it and had a blast. But a casual gamer can't pick that up and play it.

And, you know, the fact that it doesn't have "Final Fantasy" in front of it limits its ability to grab the attention it deserves.

For a majority of people I'd think it would seem to be a weird looking game with a weird (and really long) name. I don't remember much marketing for it, either. It was word of mouth for me; several friends were singing its praises so I picked it up.

I don't really believe that many people hate VIII or that it has a bad name, I just think a lot of people don't place it as high as other FF games. VIII was a technical marvel.

It's had about two weeks, so I'd imagine it's sold somewhere between 13 or 14 billion copies since then. When it was released back in '97 it sold over 2 million copies in 3 days. Obviously a re-release won't do anywhere near as well, but if it eventually tops 15 million I wouldn't be surprised.

People forget that whilst Super Mario Bros. sold over 40 million copies, it came bundled with the NES. SMB 2 & 3 only (I say "only" like they didn't achieve much...) sold about 30 million between them I think.

What surprises me is that even though the PSX and PS2 both sold over 100 million consoles, the only games across both platforms to have sold over 10 million copies are FFVII and Gran Turismo.

Not played 11 and I have yet to finish 12, so I left those off. I'm was kind of in two minds about putting 7 below 4 and 5, as I certainly enjoyed it more than either of those two, but at the same time, I was younger when I played it, and I don't think I'd get as much out were I to revisit it.

There is really a big, gaping gap between 2 and all the rest. I found 2 a struggle to get through, to be honest, whereas the others were all just varying levels of enjoyment.

I'm old-school, so the "best" FF in my opinion is a tie between III and VII. But II is right up there, and even though it was based on the weakest system (NES) FFI was a great experience.

Ok, lets say 30 FF installments, 20 Dragon Quest spinoffs, and 4 Kingdom Heart games. It still works out to all the franchises average between 2-3 million per game.

The point being despite the large difference between the numbers out of context; all three of their major franchises are making about the same amount of money per the number of installments they have.

@Kris: BS. I worked at a camp last summer and the 2nd graders who asked to play my copy got it pretty quickly.

Also, peoples' conception of what a "best-selling" game has gotten warped as-of-late. Games for the current gen consoles (save the Wii) cost so much to produce that they HAVE to sell a million or more to get in the black. The Wii and the DS are a LOT cheaper to develop for, so you can have games that sell 300,000 and still make a profit.

I actually bought three copies of TWEWY :D One for myself, and two more for two of my friends that couldn't afford their own. Sure, $120 is kind of ridiculous, but it was totally worth it if only to share the experience. I'm still sad when I mention it to people and their response is, "Oh yeah, I've been meaning to get that..." It's been almost a year since it came out, even.

@KeroseneClimax: Still makes me sad when I think about how Sakaguchi isn't with the company anymore. It's like the series doesn't even have a father anymore T___T Well, I guess Kitase is Sakaguchi's replacement (and not a terrible replacement at that). Still, it's such a shame when stuff like this happens with game developers.

@notquitedeadyet: I loved the original ones that came out in North America as Dragon Warrior. I remember getting my free copy of the first with my subscription to Nintendo Power.

Tried 8 and couldn't get into it at all. The style doesn't appeal to me anymore, but I can definitely see the charm that people who love old school 'hardcore' RPGs see.

Having played every single iteration of the main series along with an assortment of spin-offs and side projects I'd have to say my personal favourite would be X. The story and characters, as archetypal as they are, entertained me greatly. The game play, graphics, music and overall design also elated me. I've likely placed more time into it than any other offline only console game.

VI was my prior favourite, with reasons already elucidated by others. VII's also great along with IV and IX. Those four along with X are likely the only ones I could bother to replay. But the other titles have their merits and are good in their own ways, just not in any particularly fetching fashion for me.

Although, I have an exceptionally fond spot for Chocobo Racing.

Too bad DQ didn't get released in Europe and in the US before DQVIII on ps2, it would have gotten much more sales than it currently has.

I think the games issue was advertisement and accessibility, just accept it's one of the rare gems we may never see again.

Square Enix is a business, one that happens to make things we like - and they will make things we will buy, regardless of your feelings on the matter. And you know what? I like FF7 spinoffs, and the game was AWESOME.

Considering how there are tons of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games and Spin-offs, while only three Kingdom Hearts games, I'd say that Kingdom Hearts is easily the most impressive, as far as sales.

It's also the most impressive as far as story, characters, gameplay, graphics, and music, but I'll leave that aside, for now. ;D
