City Of Heroes Celebrates Five Years Of Heroism
NCsoft’s superhero simulation City of Heroes celebrates its five-year anniversary next week, with contests and events planned to keep the game’s super-powered denizens partying Paragon City into the ground.
The festivities start on Wednesday, April 28th, continuing through to Sunday, May 3rd. Kicking things off will be an in-game event running from 11am Eastern to midnight on Wednesday. The devs are being quiet about what is actually going to happen, promising only that “all CHAOS is going to break loose”. Also on Wednesday, players are urged to being in game around 8pm Eastern for the global anniversary address from the game’s lead designer, Matt “Postiron” Miller.
Other special occurrences celebrating five years include special secret guest appearances on the game’s test server, and a Fifth Anniversary Badge available to all players who log in between April 28th and May 31st, though only one will be available per character.
There will also be two contests running during the celebration; one for a logo t-shirt design and one for a City of Heroes video tribute. Details on both contests will be released on anniversary day.
During the entire celebration, old players are welcomed to return to the game for free in order to give their old characters a workout and perhaps consider freeing up some of the more impressive names they’ve been holding in limbo for several years. Not me, however. Sorry folks, but I’m holding on to Stonemason, Hightower, and Miss Stake as long as humanly possible.

@whiteflea: People still play Matrix Online too. CoH is less of a stretch, especially now that it's available on Steam, and they've put in the excellent Mission Architect feature.

I played CoH for the first six months it was out. Then WoW came out and I played that until I met my wife and forever left MMOs in my past.
Seriously, though...people still play City of Heroes?

@ryangadsby:
"City of Blasters" ended in I3. It hasn't been that way since the first year of launch.
As a blaster I got really tired of hearing that, and having to fight for them to fix an AT that, ultimately, only really had a couple of decent secondaries, especially after they gutted /Devices.
I don't trust Emmert any further than I can throw Matt Miller.
Secondly, this isn't a PvP game, it's a PvE game with SOME PvP to placate the PvPers who were missing it. They did the best they could with it... even to the degree of gutting travel powers entirely to make it happen. In any case, complaining about the PvP in the game is silly. It's like complaining that your high-end sports car isn't "comfy" enough. Duh... it's not a luxury model, it's a sports car, it's not SUPPOSED to be luxuriously comfortable.
Good news everyone! I have terrible news!

If Champions is released the way it is currently in Beta, CoX has nothing to worry about. And I really don't care if my beta gets banned for this, the game got uninstalled when the Champs team decided to advertise directly inside of CoX.
Log in and play for free? Yes please

@ryangadsby:
You only get banned if your break the Terms of Service or the EULA.
The people I've seen banned are those who resorted to name calling and profanity when their opinions were countered by actual evidence and not perception-skewed anecdotes.
@killah101: I'm sorry this pun thread didn't take off .. I'm sure it would've been super
:(
:/
People can complain away, this game will still have a special place in my heart.
@ryangadsby:
My friend (a ravid CoH fan) got in the beta and he is sorta >.< atm. He said if they really do want to release in July it is going to be a mess as they wont be nearly ready by then.

I guess I could free up Uber-Christ.
That guys backstory is so offensive.
AngerII
where is goro's other two arms?
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Guilty.
@Rebochan: It's funny because that's what the CoX community has been reduced to. If you complain about the game or claim to not enjoy the changes they made, you get called a troll and eventually banned.
I think my grievances are perfectly legitimate.
@Rebochan:
Where are you hearing negative reviews? I think the NDA might keep people who are enjoying the beta from risking their beta accounts to speak up.
Hypothetically, that would be the case with me, if I were in the beta.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: *insert overused "Oh you could have at least spelled 'X' correctly" comment*
In this case, 'X' = 'sentences' iiiiiite.
@Poison: I know. I've been at this game since the original beta. What a trip its been.
@Fallible.: Considering how I've yet to hear a positive review of Champions, I think COH may yet survive. It also sounds like NCSoft is really serious about keeping it going.
@ryangadsby: Wow, you have been playing COH a long time. You sound exactly like the longtime forum trolls.
So, happy anniversary to you to.
@ryangadsby: AND you really need a different way to start your sentances...
I tried COH recently but gave it up at the end of the first month. It felt kind of lifeless to me :/
Raziel66
Now is that Tuesday April 28th? Or Wednesday April 29th?
@Fallible.:
CoX will be dead within 6 months of Champs' release, regardless of whether Champs is even good or not. The crowd that sticks with CoX now is not the one that cares about gameplay. They stick around because they like an MMO where you have a lot of control over how a character looks, and can get an early travel power.
But power customization alone in Champs is going to pull a ton of people away from CoX, and the 80-bajillion more ways to customize characters is going to look very appetizing, especially since most CoX costume pieces (aside from the newer ones, JLove did a fantastic job on them) look incredibly bland.
@ryangadsby: but how do you really feel
themissing
Hey look!
That guy on the right looks like Goro, before the accident....?
Too bad it's really only been playable for about 1.5-2 of those years.
In the early Emmert days heroside content was bland as shit and there wasn't enough content to support the grind in the later levels.
Not to mention glaring balance issues. City of Blasters, anyone?
And then neglecting the hell out of villain content because their dev team got cut to like 15 people.
And then Castle using 'how much are players whining about something' as the new metric for balancing powersets.
And don't even get me started on how they neutered PvP.
And now relying on players to create content because the stuff they churn out now is bland and caters to heroes only while the villains get to play tagalong on hero arcs.
I9-i12 was the golden age of CoX. Sad to see what they've done to the game after they worked so hard to fix it.
As an on-again-off-again subscriber of City of Heroes, I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate the players for tolerating five-years worth of crippling bugs.
As an aside, let's hope the next five are as good to game as this one has been, but seeing the imminent arrival of Champions, I really doubt they will be.

Man, great game back in the day. I tried to get back into it recently as a villain, but I just couldn't find a class I really liked. I still loved my years playing as Miss Medbot, the empathic defender robot. So awesome.

@whiteflea: About 130,000 subscribers? Alright. I'll give ya that there are people with 2 accounts. 120,000 just to be safe.
I do have to say, I don't think I would've liked City of Heroes when it first came out. It's a pretty reworked beast by now.
(Time to see if standard links work)
It's the black line.

I've been playing this game for years and I still love it. :) Can't wait to see what happens next week.

@whiteflea: There's a guy playing it beside me right now.
@Good news everyone! I have terrible news!:
The reason they made these changes, however, was to specifically attract 'new' players to PvP. In other words, people who don't normally PvP.
To accomplish this, they essentially destroyed what people who actually did PvP had mastered. This wasn't like nerfing one power, or even one class. They changed it on a fundamental level so that it was no longer the same game. PvPers left in droves, and the 'new' PvPers actually PvPed for all of two weeks before going back to PvE.
So all they accomplished was alienating one of their most dedicated bases.
@mrdietsoda:
There are posters on the CoX boards who go back through other posters' history, reporting everything that could possibly be interpreted as a EULA violation, and get their friends to do the same. I've been personally harassed in this manner, and upon reporting his actions (apparently he ended up getting banned too and got incredibly butthurt about it) I got harassed in-game too. The fact that shitty members of the community like this began (with some success) to attempt to represent the players as a whole is one of the major reasons why I quit.
And they do this because they are incapable of handing somebody disagreeing with them, especially once evidence is presented against their claims.
Also, the devs specifically began to ignore anybody with feedback they didn't want to here. I mean, literally put them on ignore. Not just people who went 'OMG WORST ISSUE EVAR', but people who actually took the time to write thought-out arguments of why they thought the devs were taking the game in a bad direction. Apparently, these people were just "whining", to quote Castle himself (I'd link the post but I'm pretty sure it's long been deleted).
It reeks of a company that is incredibly afraid that their audience is going to turn on them once a shinier product comes out. They take every effort to quash all dissent to create the illusion that they have a dedicated base. Once Champs comes out, CoX is dead.
@Dopefish: I have a hard time getting into the villain classes as well. Brutes are like bad tankers, or scrappers with punchivoke. Corrs are kind of like bad defenders that do more damage... and those are the villain ATs that I "like!"
I'm kind of psyched about the villain epic archetypes, Soldiers of Arachnos, so I'm plvling up some 50's redside just so I can try them out.

@whiteflea: My friend got married and he didn't stop playing CoH.. in fact, his wife has her own account. Then they had a kid... so now they have a bind for "/team afk baby".

@Good news everyone! I have terrible news!: Truly, and it was more like "City of Smoke Grenade" at that. My En/En blaster was never over-powered, and he had the perma-debt to prove it. But a bugged power is NOT a balance issue. It's a bug, as in powers working not as intended.
I didn't really mind, it helped steer the nerf-bat away from the COMPLETELY broken things that my Fire controller and Invuln scrapper were doing. Or my burn tank. Of course, they eventually came for all of those characters, but I played them all in their 'glory days'.

@whiteflea: not only do people play it, but due to the new cash from ncsoft, the developer team is now about 3 times the size it was when the strongest issues(9, 10 and 11) were released. so yeah, coh is still going quite strong.

@Good news everyone! I have terrible news! (Werrick): As someone who's played City of Heroes since I3 (reppin' Virtue, Circle of Jerks/Legitimate Businessmen forever), yeah, I9-I12 was great, but I14? Mission Creator? Far beyond anything anyone expected, and made of awesome.
Also, fuck the entire Forum Cartel. Fuck alllll of them. I knew half of those posers (because fully half of them are on Virtue, and the rest on Free-dumb) and I didn't like a one of them. Silly bitches. Ireland Love, Sorah, dragonberry, all of them fluffing ho'bags, kiss my ass. ((This is NOT YOUR BRIDGE.))
Jack Emmert. Let me just say, the community at large is finally beginning to forget the taste of Emmert's penis being shoved down our throat. (ChO beta testers - that's the 'this is fun but I feel sort of sick at my stomach' not-quite-happy taste in the back of your mouth.)
Castle: Castle is both a caring, interested developer, and a whiny bitch.
Lighthouse: GRR. Railroading, self-aggrandizing, asshole - who brought us PERC? Who REPLACED CUPPOJO - BRING ME MY CUPPAJO BACK, YOU ARROGANT FUCKS! *weeps* Joooooo! Now THERE was a community rep! God I miss her.
City Of Blasters: laawl. What? I took a energy/energy from 1 to 44 in a month in I4 and I don't know what the hell you're talking about. I have a long string of screenshots called the Five Mile Face Crawl.
@Javert: I played Champions Online and am not bound by any silly NDA. It's crap. I've talked to my friends, who are all bound by the NDA. They think it's crap (except for one guy who's the only one who never actually played City of Heroes - he kinda likes it but he thinks it needs work.)
I'm still keeping Evil Cute before they banned Evil in villain names!
Wonder if they changed that feature too...
oooshiny
@Javert:
No, he has a point with the devs. It wasn't as bad as he's describing it, but there was an element of what he's talking about. CoH/V was, at the same time, the best and the worst community I've ever been a part of.
The only place he's a little off is the whole "Forum Cartel" argument, where a small group of posters seemed to control the development of the game. That just simply isn't the case. I can assure you that as a long-time poster with something in the neighbourhood of 16,000 posts over a three year period that we hard-core forumites were ignored just like everyone else.
The problem was that they kept talking about how they listened to the player base, but nobody ever talked to us except for Castle. And he was alright, over all, he really did care about the game and the community, but he was abrasive sometimes when he shouldn' thave been.
He was certainly a whole lot better than Alex "Lighthouse" VonMinden who is, by far, the single worst community rep I've EVER seen. He's worse than some of the volunteer mods I've met. Abysmally upsetting. I don't know where he's working now, but I hope it's not in gaming. He got himself fired from NCSoft for mouthing off to a community member... for those of us who had run-ins with him we weren't surprised.
Good news everyone! I have terrible news! (Werrick)
@ludwigk:
Moreover, it was the fact that there was only about two or three combinations that you could pick for blasters between the primary and secondaries that were viable. Fire/ was a great primary, but /fire sucked. /EM was an awesome secondary for blapping, but NRG/ sucked as a primary.
The only real options for blasters for a long, long time was either Fire/NRG or Ice/NRG. Fire/DEV was awesome for a while, even with the (very appropriate) smoke grenade fix, before they gutted the auto-turret.
That beign said, things are a lot better now with the Defiance changes and the reworking of the powers, slight resistance to mez and such.
Good news everyone! I have terrible news! (Werrick)
@ryangadsby: Wow...gee. Sure sounds like someone currently posting here did get banned. And a conspiracy theory to boot!
How does one get harassed in game for something they posted? I am curious.
Are you in a militia?
Javert
@ryangadsby: So you seem to think that people who have invested several years in a game are simply going to jump off?
And as for your NDA nonsense...exactly how would they know if I was in Beta? Just curious? If the game was bad (IMO) what would I risk by coming here and stating that opinion?
Javert
@ryangadsby: And the 5 people who played PVP back then were very upset, and left the game when they couldn't successfully gank someone 10 out of 10 times.
