Codemasters To Release Two Formula 1 Games

While we’ve long known Codemasters have been working on a new Formula 1 game – and also that it would be serious – the company have today come out and made some official announcements.

Seems there is not one, but two F1 games currently in development. The first will be out this year, and will be for the PSP and Wii. The second will be out 360, PS3 & PC and, presumably because the bigger machines need longer development cycles, won’t be on shelves until 2010.

Both games are of course officially licensed, meaning they’ll feature real cars, real drivers and real tracks. Still no word on those Nazi sex dungeon minigames, though.

@duckmouth: yes; the psp is slightly less powerful than the ps2, the wii slightly more. you could say they're the same "gen"

Sweet I have been looking out for a new F1 game. Its also quite weird to see a link here on Kotaku to another Gawker network site that is not Gizmodo.

It will be interesting to see how they balance the cars given the current state of play in F1. Also, it is kind of amusing that PSP and Wii are put together in the same category. Is the power of each of these consoles that similar?

can't wait for this, it's about time there was a new formula 1 game I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's actually good.

i also wish GT would release a few more F1 cars for concept.

The thing that annoyed me about the previous F1 game was that it was pretty much outdated the moment it came out - so much changes so fast in F1.

I suppose it'll be asking too much for DLC expansion packs each year to update cars and drivers.

But anyway, finally my Xbox will have an F1 game, I can't wait!

I was excited about the announcement when I first heard about it, but since then I've seen what they're doing to the Colin McRea series. Hopefully they keep a focus on making a sim focused F1 game and not feature wild drug fulled parties and ramping F1 cars.

I think F12009 is in good hands with Codemasters, but I to am sick of seeing outdated F1 games. When will we eventually see a F1 game set in the same season.

Though Codemasters have time to develop it's concept so eventually we might see some consistent flow of F1 games. Just give them time.

Last week went to see the F1 in Shanghai and suddenly I'm totally back into the sport. It's a good thing Sony isn't the only company with the F1 license anymore and Codemasters are defintely the best company to make these driving games (don't want Polyphony Digital getting distracted from GT5 which I hope will be launched this year)

Which begs the question, will there be free updates to the cars when the real ones are changed?

  • Rhawb

Grid engine? Sad face. I was staying hopeful for an F1 simulation, but I guess we won't be seeing that for quite a while. Just F1 cars spinning around a central axis with no regard for what the tires are doing. Sigh.

  • Joewithay

I wonder if the games will have the Stewards changing results after you finish the race...

  • Kirbysuperstar

@Bum_Trumpet: I just hope it allows you to drive out of the pits with the fuel hose attached. Fuck me that was hilarious.

@sander_dutch: That and the fact that they kept the games only on PlayStation: not exactly the platform of choice for racing simulator enthusiasts.

  • Geckosan

I'll be looking forward to seeing Codemasters take on a F1 game as I was never overly impressed with Sony's efforts.

As some other commentators have said it'll be interesting seeing quite how accurately they choose to model the cars as some have a serious performance advantage over the others (you wouldn't be rushing to jump into a Ferrari anyway).
Being as half the teams will be having completely different cars in a few races will they choose to make them a bit more generic?

  • KesMonkey

@Shteve: Me too. I lost countless hours to that game, mostly at Monza, Spa and Suzuka. Nowaday's I get my F1 thrills playing rFactor. There are many high quality F1 mods available for it, from GP1979 to FSone 2008 and virtually every circuit that has featured on the F1 calendar in the last 30 years or so. I highly recommend you give it a go.. :)

    KesMonkey

  • Geckosan

@Joewithay: I was just thinking the same ;)

Maybe they will have a team principle management mode where half the game is battling lawyers in court rooms over poorly worded rules, deciding when to lie to race officials, and trying to stop your drivers from taking each other out in the first corner.

@Rhawb: +1 Grid was a really fun game, but still very "arcadey" for some looking for a simulator experience. I worry this game may come off as more of a NFL Street to Madden, more of a exaggerated version.

Should still be fun though. I have liked most of Codemaster's offerings.

@KesMonkey: 2007. Alonso was champion so wore 1. As his teammate Hamilton got 2.

In 2008, Alonso moved back to Renault, Raikonnen as champion got 1 and Massa 2, and McLaren had had all their 2007 points deleted due to spygate and therefore classified last, getting numbers 22 (Hamilton) and 23 (Kovalainen).

The world champion always gets car 1, his teammate getting 2, then the car numbers are allocated to constructors in the previous season's constructors' championship order. If the world champion is with the constructors' champion, number 3 goes to the runner-up, but if he moves to a different team the constructors' champion gets car 3. Number 13 is not used. Damon Hill took number 1 to the Arrows in 1997, with the Williams cars getting 3 and 4.

If the world champion retires, the previous winning constructor gets numbers 0 and 2 - 1 is retired for that season. This happened to Damon Hill twice, in 1993 (Mansell as champion retired) and 1994 (Prost retired as champion). It looks like the current car numbering system started in 1996.

Was there an F1 game at some point whereby it deliberately came out at the end of the season so that the real events of previous races actually occured in game? As in finishing positions, crashes, pits etc. I'm sure I remember reading about one years ago, just think it'd be really cool to implement that. Love Formula 1, will be getting this for 360 and possibly Wii/PSP to bridge the wait.

Not too happy about this. The previous F1 on PS3 is spectacular and still has some of the best driving physics, options and graphics to this day. This using the Grid engine is not good. Grid was a fun game but the engine has no place in an F1 game for me. I highly doubt this game will surpass it's predecessor.

    ANNOUNCED EXPANSION PACKS VIA DLC:

The Nazi Sex Dungeon expansion wasn't listed, but these were:

Splinter Cell expansion - Spy, lie, cheat, pass confidential documents. Don't get caught or... nothing will happen.

F1 Stewards expansion - Make arbitrary, fully biased, decisions about drivers, cars and race incidents, before, during and up to two weeks after each race.

Max Mosley Expansion - Change the rules every season and see just how bad you can eff up F1.

Bernie Ecclestone Expansion - Bitch, Moan, Complain, pretend you care about the sport and not the money, try to make yourself relevant.

The list goes on. I was literally coming to Kotaku today to search on F1 to see if I had missed news about these games since I hadn't heard anything lately. I'm excited, even though I keep getting less and less excited about F1.

@Pyrefly: It was awesome, surely Codemasters wouldn't make an arcade F1 game would they? I'd expect a hell of a step up from Grid in terms of realism, handling and the tactical side. To be fair, we don't know what the engine itself is capable of, we've only really seen Grid on it so far (Dirt was the older engine I believe), so I guess for me cautious optimism is the way forward.

Codemasters have said they will have two modes of play, one similar to Grid, with arcade handling and settings, and a simulation mode which is yet to be unveiled.

@Verge: i read on the codemasters forum from one of the dev's that the game will have both sim features and arcade features to suit both players, but that it will be completely different from GRID which as he said was a total arcade game.

i'm looking forward to this game, i just can't wait for it though... the last F1 game is 2006 season, and although the graphics are still nice in it, there are many flaws in F1CE (like no safety car, retired cars disappear, terrible penalties, no stop/go penalties, no real random failures, etc..)

an up to date F1 game, that has all those above features will be great - 2010 is just too damn far away - especially with this season being so exciting

@brooza: probably not, they plan on doing a yearly F1 game, so i doubt they'd update the cars/teams/tracks to bring it up to the next season... even though it probably could be done very cheaply

Since when does releasing ONE game across different formats with different release dates count as two seperate games? Unless the PSP/Wii versions are completely different to the other versions then it's ONE game. Or, if you want to be pedantic, it's five games as each game only works on it specified format.

There's a PSP screenshot on Formula1.com for the PSP version.
