Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete Gave PS3 A Sales Bump

On April 16, Blu-ray flick Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete went on sale. Included was something many Japanese gamers had been waiting for: the Final Fantasy XIII demo.

If early data is correct, the movie provided a boast to PS3 sales in The Land of the Rising Sun. The week before FFVII: ACC was released in Japan, PS3 sales were 16,701 units. Apparently, the week FFVII: ACC launch, PS3 sales bounced up to 57,000 units — which could put the PS3 at the top of the charts.

Expect official confirmation when official numbers are released tomorrow.

Title should be changed to "Final Fantasy XIII Demo Gave PS3 A Sales Bump"

In the other hand, Monster Hunter G went out this week with the MH3 demo.. I wonder how that will affect the Wii sales.

  • narutoboy001

Well im excited for the Movie/Demo if the demo comes on the US Version then im in it wasnt that bad of a movie it had a good story.... hey atleast Square Wont Sell out to MS like they did with FF XIII release on the 360 ya never know they may put this on a HD-DVD special for the 360 if so ive lost all hope in square

  • sander_dutch

@Maxyboy13: Because then you get angry people who don't want to pay a high price for a demo (GT5Prologue crying babies). Now it's just an awesome extra
It's all just cereal-box psychology really

I'm probably one of the few "hardcore" gamers out there that has never really played FFVII. *gasp* I have watched friends play through various segments of the game however. I'm just not a fan of turn-based games (X-Com was an exception).

I'm not too much of an RPG guy having only played through and finished a handful of them (including LoZ: LttP, Shadowrun (SNES), LoZ: TP are what I can think of off the top of my head ATM).

My question is, is it worth playing through VII, even though technology and gameplay mechanics have improved vastly, and knowing what happens to certain characters and events in the story?

I enjoyed watching FFVII:AC, but I can't say it was a good movie.

  • lunarcore

@alfredofroylan: It's a decent movie. These insults remind me of the Crackdown release. Great game that got far too much hate because people think it's a funnier story if the demo is more important. Actually Tobal #1 would be a earlier example.

  • bakagaijin

@notquitedeadyet: it means "to do one's best" or "Keep at it".

  • lunarcore

@dagamer34: Or it takes a ton of time/money to localize a cinimatic JRPG. There isn't even a hint of MS being involved with this movie. Still going to see a major Blu-ray get released with exclusive footage either way. MS still gets shafted on FF's home turff.

  • Codypotamus

I'll buy the movie because I love the movie,I think the demo had a big part of it, but you gotta understand it's freakin FF7. That game has one of the biggest fan bases, especially in Japan. I doubt the demo will come to the US just cause of translation time and effort. The movie looks amazing in blu ray though....A must buy if your a FF7 fan.Now see Sony...look at these numbers....now what if you remade FF7 on PS3?...yeah think of the sales figures then.....

  • Bialia

@lunarcore: Localisation is likely a key reason, but subbing the cut scenes and some basic translation of the menus as someone else has mentioned, would be awesome, and a relatively small task. Probably very little, considering how poorly the console MH games sell. Sales for the PS2 versions absolutely pale in comparison to the PSP versions.

Most people don't seem to realize that the main draw of the MH series is that the portable titles allow for wifi ad-hoc parties where people get together and meet up in person. That social experience is what makes the MH games sell so well, and console games simply don't allow that.

The PS3 is region free, allowing you to download games from other regions stores.

@DrunkRaba: If you think about it, they really shot themselves in the foot if they were trying to get Advent Children to stand on its own as a release. Instead, they'll have to change the name of the release from "Advent Children Complete" to "FFXIII Demo."

  • MiltonZep

After skimming through the Blu Ray Advent Children movie, I can safely say that I might take the plunge for the blu ray if they come up a decent collector's edition for the right price... I'll just think of it the same way I did for Lord of the Rings...

Kinda disappointed how all those extra scenes don't really add too much to the movie, though it's nice that they added some new action scenes. I felt quite giddy with Sephiroth doing his thang with his Masamune (or was it Muramasa?).

Anyway, THEY STILL HAVEN'T FIXED THAT FLOATING MONSTER IN THE OPENING MOTORCYCLE SEQUENCE! You think the time they take to reanimate and edit certain scenes, they would actually fix that glaring mistake in the beginning. But no, it's still there!

  • WolfmanWalt

@CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan: Then I'm confused, and I'm sorry to sound like an idiot (which means I do a lot of appologizing most of the time) but wouldn't that make the PS3 region locked? I was always under the impression that because Blurays were regionless that they could function on any PS3, whereas any region encoded data aside from US region encodes would not function on a PS3 due to said lock. I.E. If the PS3 were really regionless, then software wouldn't have any method of telling which region the PS3 would work for, so all PS2 games would work and not just NTSC U/C.

Likewise: I was always under the impression that since PSN games, etc, function; they are likewise non-region encoded and that's why they function on my PS3...Just tell me I need to research this a bit more if I'm talking out my ass too much with my preconceptions as to how this works I'd honestly like to know.

@Muon: Kind of like they did with the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo amirite? ZOE would have never sold as much as it did in the west without that push.

Plus SE know they have the emo's and the FF fans with this move for sure... it just doesn't have the same pull factor worldwide as Metal Gear did.

Either way Day one... I shall be getting this...for the movie first, demo second.

I must be the only person in the world who actually wants the movie on Blu-Ray and doesn't want the FFXIII demo.

I just don't see why you'd want to tease yourself with an hour of a game that won't come for more than a year. I'd rather play the whole game fresh when it comes out, rather than spoiling part of the game now.

Of course, I was also the person who didn't want to see the first 10 minutes of The Dark Knight they teased when people watched I Am Legend on opening weekend.

@MtlAngelus: That's the only thing that gets you to bulge? At least it's not car crashes, I suppose, but it does mean you don't have fun very often.

  • bobtheduck

@crabperson: This guy named Tim did. But that tim, though...

    @WolfmanWalt:

PS1 games on PS3: region free (at least the downloaded ones, I've never tried a disc based Japanese PS1 games)

PS2 games on PS3: Not region free (yet... They have the technology, we can make it better... and such)

PS3 games on PS3: Region free (all games work in all regions, BUT PAL games will not work on SD NTSC TVs, and vice versa. ALL PS3 games will work on ALL systems if connected to HDTVs_

Bluray Movies on PS3: Not region free, but there are only 3 bluray regions, as opposed to, what, 10 DVD regions? The US and Japan are in the Same bluray region. Too bad movies in Japan are more expensive than games, or I'd be excited by that idea... It'll make it nice when I get to Japan, though, since I won't have to buy another Bluray player.

DVDs on Bluray players: Not region free, but if you have a PS2, you can get DVD-regionX and remove this limitation.

  • CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

    @WolfmanWalt:
    Damn....
I thought I had it figured out, but you make a really good point, how does it figure out what region you are in.

I would have to say that your theory must be right, that the PS3's are indeed region specific, and the media is the non-region item.

Then there is the whole issue of accounts on the PS3, could on set up a Japanese account on the PS3 and theoretically use it for other regions products?
I know changing a region is possible on a PS3 testkit via the Debug menu, but that is something totally different. Perhaps this lends truth to your point, why would the testkit even offer a region change setting if the end users retail kit would work anyways.

your turning my whole world upside down!

    CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

  • FlagshipFighter

@bableebooblah-new and improved.: If that's the case, I sould of bought 15 PS1's, that would be like, 4 PS3's with 4 CELLS! WHAAOOOH!

  • bobtheduck

@StevenRafael: You seriously underestimate the stupidity potential of "anyone"

  • robbo_the_hood

@dagamer34: Could put the demo on a DVD in NA.

    robbo_the_hood

  • robbo_the_hood

@robbo_the_hood: A DVD that came with the Blu-Ray special edition of course.

    robbo_the_hood

  • robbo_the_hood

@Bialia: They could just release the demo on a DVD.

    @def PD:

    The short answer is no.

There is nothing that you will find interesting. Only nolstalgia keeps people coming back for more.

In the end, its a decent game with a typical pretentious story. It rode on the fact that it was 3D and wasn't even the best of the PSX FF's.

  • Suzaku

@Shiroi Kaze: Really? They actually didn't add that much new action footage, only a bit of new stuff in the motorcycle chase sequence and at the end of the fight with Sephiroth. The bulk of the new footage is there to improve the plot structure and pacing, to help explain some things that weren't obvious, to make the plight of those with Geostigma more dramatic, and to ditch some repetetive scenes during the conversation between Kadaj and Rufus. That, and to link the film more closely with On the Way to a Smile and Crisis Core.

    Suzaku

  • Suzaku

@jrc1337: Well, Advent Children Complete hasn't been released in the US yet, and won't be for a while longer.

It remains to be seen whether or not they'll release the demo in English.

    Suzaku

  • Suzaku

@def PD: Actually, the LoZ games fall into the adventure genre. They have more in common with Metal Gear than Final Fantasy.

@def PD: Watching AC or ACC without having played the original is denying yourself a large portion of what makes it fun to watch, nostalgia. There are scenes which I could see being non-special for someone who hadn't played the original, but would be amazing to fans. Plus, the movie is chock-full of easter eggs -- drawings in houses, photographs on tables, shop signs, billboards, and so on.

    Suzaku

  • Patient

@lunarcore: Yes, you are right. Clearly I fabricate everything I complain about. How silly of me to question why it takes a year "..Or more" to localize a finished game when it's two predecessors took only 6 months.

The concept of "Timed Release" and "Fairness clause" are figments of my imagination and I am the only person here on Kotaku that finds the delay ridiculous.

Does your nick Lunarcore describe what is found inside of your head?

  • Minamu

Well the movie was pretty good IIRC so why not? ;)

  • Sweetchorizo

@Bialia: At 5 gigs the demo is bigger then most 360 games.

  • zordac

@Zeag: they might not be able to contractually thanks to Microsoft.

    @dagamer34:

Yep. Jepar seems to just not know how to shop for these things smartly =) If I wanted, sure. I can go to Best Buy and gets the newest movie for $30. I don't fancy that sort of thing though. Why get one for $30 when you can get two or three at that price? Rare on three, but it's possible with certain sales.

I just believe in buying my Blu Ray movies smartly, and I just don't think the $20+ range is very friendly. But you pay for quality and releases, I do figure. So if one has the patience, the price will eventually drop to reasonable levels.

  • Shiroi Kaze

@Suzaku: You're right about those two action scenes, but they did change/improve certain scenes like when Vincent first appears. I like the direction they took with geostigma this time, but I didn't feel it was enough... But then again, I only did skim through the movie...

    Shiroi Kaze

  • WolfmanWalt

@bobtheduck: I'll have to see if I can pick up a Japanese PS1 game and test it, local gamestore has afew, so I'll have to check if they have anything good. I'll let you know my results as you've been really helpful.

Didn't know that about Bluray movies having regions though. Thats what I get for having assumptions.

@CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan: That's another good question. Sounds like we have a mystery on our hands. I'm getting pretty curious about this thing now, since it's been brought up. It's nice to know what my system can and cannot do. If Bob is right and you can infact play Japanese PS1 games, it sinks my theory entirely, so I'll have to do abit of investigative journalism. It's like I'm really a Hardy Boy....man...manboy.

hahaha, thats funny. a ff xiii demo increased ps3 sales. just thinking how much of a bump the actual game would have when it releases in 5 years. by the time the game comes out, the demo will look like a last gen game. damn you square enix!
