@AssassinXaero: Achievements are a way for someone to see exactly how little real world skills they have. Its also a great way to not feel bad when you get your but kicked on a game. Just look at that player's achievement score, if its ridiculously high, at least you know you've been beaten by someone whom has lost at the game of life.

Achievements, Schmevievents... Here's some real world math for you...

A higher Achievement score correlates directly to a low "real life" score.

"hey, i got all the achievements in Gears!" --- yeah, but you're still working part time at Arby's. Congrats.

People who cheat to increase their score? They've got to be on welfare or something...maybe MS should award foodstamps to those who have the highest Achievement scores. They're gonna need 'em.

@riffleraffle: I tend to agree. If they cheat in a meaningful way that affects other players (i.e. multiplayer/online cheats) then fair enough, but who cares about gamerscore or achievements?

What a waste of time. Who the heck cares? They're only worthless achievements, and pointless gamerscores. It's not like you can trade them in for anything, or like anybody other than you actually cares what your score is.

@Hooligunn: Eh, I don't think you are giving them too much credit. I was one of the ones on the fence with Epic. Until they put out TU3. They did a lot of work with that update so I don't think they deserve as much shit as they get sometimes. Sure they screwed up initially, but they have done a lot to fix it.

Yea, it got to where I was seeing a glitched rank 100 every match. Since they had the rank and glitched it, they would always quit the match seeing as they don't eat the exp penalty, therefore ruining it for everyone.

@illiniphase4: Again, I have to disagree on that. They can't start punching the ban button immedietely, or patch immedietely, because if they screw something up people will be even MORE annoyed. It's not as simple as do this, do that, everything will be fine. Be realistic.

And to Epic's credit, they have put out 2 big TUs out in under 4 months, and 1 small one to address matchmaking. It's unfortunate we had to wait till TU3 to have a much better online experience, but it's still a very short turn around for TUs. They might have screwed up initially but they honestly are making up for it. TU4 is even in the works to patch out some very minor stuff and improve online play even more.

Who knows, maybe I give too much credit to MS and Epic where it's not due. But to me, it's been extremely fast turnarounds for TUs and bans.

@Archaotic: It's nice that MS is finally getting around to this... but it's taken them fucking long enough.

Cheating in pretty much any manner violates the EULA for Live services, and pretty much screws the experience for everyone else (paying customers). MS should have been on this on day 1, all the while forcing the Epic to immediately fix all of the loopholes that allow people to glitch and cheat.

The whole way that Epic and MS has dealt with the fixing of GoW 2's multiplayer has been lackadaisical and slow.

It was ranking. Update 3 created a new ranking system going from level 1 to 100. Within days people were walking around with a level 100 character. Level 100 characters have been rumored to be needing 7.2 million experience points. With a great game being 3000 experience points and taking at least 10 minutes a shot, it was obvious they were using save exploits. I think the legit players are around level 50-60 now.

Seriously, gamerscore tampering doesn't hurt anyone in Gears of War. Everytime we see someone with rank 100, we just chuckled and we know this person must be a noob. What M$ needs to do is to ban the people that cheat with the game like lag switching or using exploits. I couldn't care less with people that try to hack the game just so he can get "Seriously 2.0". People that try to win the game unfairly are the ones that needed to be taken care of.

AFAIC, using glitches, exploits, etc. that are already in the game/a part of the game, isn't cheating.

That's just taking advantage of the developers' oversight.

It becomes cheating when you bring in outside software/hardware to exploit/hack the game.

If your software allows for nefarious things because you've forgotten or failed to code it properly, that's your own damn fault.

I don't know that this is what was happening here, but if it was, the gamerscores should stand. Patch your game, but don't rap the gamers on the knuckles for something that is the developers' problem.

After you beat the game, there are all these monotonous extra challenges you can complete to give you these virtual points that say "I beat this". I am a sucker tor gomerpoints sometimes. But when I finish getting them... I just feel like I wasted time for nothing. They are overrated lol. Stick to your wii and PC. Just as good.

I'm on Xbox LIVE and while I like having a Gamerscore, I don't see the point in showing people how high it is nor boasting about it. All it shows is how much you play games and in the world of dating women and being a man, its not something you should necessarily be proud of. IT means you waste lots of time playing videogames and when you really look at it, its kind of SAD. I like games but only as a diversion. I am not looking at it like a sport or some sort of silly competition.

@b-radicate: It used to be that there was a room in the finale of No Mercy with a door that survivors couldn't open. Survivors had to stand on the roof of the room, and lure the zombies towards them. The zombies would scratch at the walls and climb the room, destroying the door in the process. The Survivors run in the door, and you're in Jesus Room! During the finale onslaught, infected can't detect you and eventually die on their own.

@AssassinXaero: It depends. In some games they indicate to you and your friends (you can compare achievements with others on XBL) how thoroughly you have completed a game. For instance, I can see that friend x played GTA IV but only got a hundred or so achievement points. So when I am inviting said friend to a multiplayer game I might choose a game my friend has earned more achievement points in. (indicating they liked the game or are competent at it, or even own it)

Similarly, some achievements are extremely difficult to get and indicate to others (if they care to look) that you are highly skilled at that game.

Still other achievements force you to try things in games you wouldn't have otherwise tried. For instance, surviving a minute in Geometry Wars without firing a single shot. Or flying a helicopter under all the bridges in GTA IV. Some open up aspects of games you never thought of. Some are fool's errands.

Sony liked the achievement system enough to rip it off wholesale. So it can't be all bad. Most PS3 and 360 owners would be lying if they denied occasionally feeling a sense of satisfaction at earning certain achievements. Humans like feedback. It feels good for my 360 to say: "Hey, I saw you hit that tank with a moltov in L4D, nice shot, here's a cookie."

How many personal achievements in your life do you think you'll accomplish that people will remember after you are gone? Slim to none, I'd think. You're one speck of dust on the planet. Does this mean someones gamerscore will be remembered? Of course not.

But for someone who takes personal pride in it, it will probably amount to a feeling comparable to anything you achieve, like it or not (I'm assuming you dont, being the dismissive sounding person you are).

@Xusder: Oh, the irony. Someone found Jesus rocks (without the Jesus). I just joined a quick match on 360 while reading this - went to a Last Stand in progress, everyone dead but one. It's two rocks on the lower corner of the map by the sea side. A tank went for them and fell off the map. They made it to nine minutes, and got nabbed by a smoker finally.

Wonder if they'll patch the 360 version of these, as they're found?

The thing about this particular achievement is that it requires a hacked Xbox to initially get. Once someone has it they can glitch it for another account and then that account (Possibly for someone with a perfectly legal Xbox) can glitch it for another account.

It's basically like a virus, uh, except the user has to want to catch it?

@54r93: With title update 3 Epic introduced an exp ranking system. In order to get to level 100 (The top) you need somewhere between 6.8 - 7.2 million points (No one knows the exact amount as no one has done it legit). A really good game of Gears 2 will net you 3,000 points and might take about 15 - 20 mins to play.

So if you do the maths you can see how long it should take to get to level 100. People were walking around with 100's within days of the patch hitting.

People were using hacked Xbox's to give themselves level 100. Once a player has 100 they can then use a glitch in the game to give that rank to another GT.

@MattB: What you have to realize is that to some folks, their gamerscore is just as important to them as fair multiplayer rounds are to the rest of us... Some of these folks are invested heavily in their achievements. To them, it matters if others get there unfairly. Further, even though all games have inherent flaws, theirs a class of gamer out their who, for reasons unknown to me, actively invest themselves in exploiting all of them... Why not just play the stinkin games the way their supposed to be played?

@Hooligunn: C'mon man. You're giving Epic far too much wiggle room. I purchased the game at launch, and basically completely unable to play or enjoy the entire multiplayer portion of the game because of the glitches and cheats that people were rampantly employing. With this many issues, MS should have been bitch-slapping gamers willing to use the glitches to their own ends and bitch-slapping Epic for taking almost 5 months to fix it.

5 months to finally getting around to game breaking issues? Unacceptable.
