How To Quit Your Game Development Job
Game developers – they always have to make a game out of everything, including quitting their job as a game developer for 2K Australia.
Farbs will no longer be working for 2K Australia come June 5th, having resigned his position in order to work full time creating games like the most excellent ROM CHECK FAIL. Being a game developer with a focus on the earlier days of the industry, Farbs couldn’t resist creating one last game – A Message for 2K Australia. Combining elements of Mario and a small splash of his own game, Polychromatic Funk Monkey, Farbs delivers one of the more entertaining “I Quit” notices you’re ever likely to find.
Good luck on your next adventure Farbs!
A Message for 2K Australia [Farbs.com - Thanks, Jason!]

I think that was epic, and much more original than any other resignation I've ever heard of. Yes he ripped off Mario, but how many of us would even take the time to do what he did, much less design a game from the ground up just to resign. It sure as hell beats just flipping off your boss mooning people etc. Classy way to go out man, I salute you and wish you well on future projects.
@Michael McWhertor: Brooke's third album of Ashlee Simpson's rejects approves.
What better way to leave, then to give your photosensitive boss a seizure. Kudos.
Oh snap? The ROM CHECK FAIL guy? I looooved that game. I wonder what he'll be up to next?
Spiffyness
Cute. But it would have been cooler to play more of his game rather then something ripped off. I mean, if he worked for Nintendo it would have made sense. Oh wait, this is the internet, you can't be critical of things like this...
Wow this was awesome!
Can I have his job?
Well, that's one more spot open for all of the unemployed developers out there right now...
I've always wanted to quit the same way the singer did in That Thing You Do, but I doubt anyone at my office will ask me to give them something upbeat, something snappy.
Of course, I've always wanted Tom Hanks to be my boss, too, but mostly because I wanted to know if he signs letters and emails:
Thanks,
T.Hanks
Daft Punk at the end nice. But i couldve done without the seizure inducing colors.
@Phlycheez: The worst consequence ever.
@kriv: Because spending months of time and thousands of dollars developing a completely original game only to use it to resign amicably from your current job is a fantastic idea.
/sarcasm
@KING_STEWART: Yeah, take that, Farbs!
You'll be sorry you traded in your cred as a corporate cog in exchange for that lousy ultimate creative freedom and self-actualization!
@kriv: Are you an idiot?
supo
@bebop4one:
Man, but Spongebob is awesome. :| I always wished they made a game with him that didn't suck.
TrickyNishidake
@ThatShortGuy: I'd imagine that Stephen would take a different approach, co-creating "Hogan Knows Stephen Totilo's Last Day Of Employment At MTV."
Missed opportunity!
@TravisTouchdown: Yeah, almost makes me want to quit my job, just so I can use it. Heheh. Great stuff!
kinda sad in a way.
hope he finds better work
I was almost able to beat his resignation...but then I grabbed the flag and had a seisure.
@ThatShortGuy: Oh.
I knew that...
@xAnarChisTx: LMAO!
Mommar
@ThePurpleWall: Technically, not until the beginning of May. I'm referring to his departure from MTV.
If I ever wrote a letter of resignation like that to my boss, she'd probably look at me all weird.
I love this..
This is how i will quit my next job..
just watch,
PenitentPenguin
@KING_STEWART: more like WAL-MART among there Ds box of Rocks and memory sticks full of pron!
Rey Rodrigues
His resignation letter features horrible gameplay and uses copyrighted material! Not the best start to an indie gaming career :)
UsernameOfTheDead
That was plain awesome. Also rom check fail is great!
mitch_93
Wow ripping off a 24 year old game, ummm is this a blessing to 2K?
kriv
That is the epitome of classy and clever making children (with nerdy throwing a gene or two into the pot).
I am NOT amused >:|
Awesome! I just walked out of THQ when they took me off of Saint's Row and put me on Sponge bob. Maybe I should have done something like this instead?
bebop4one
This is one of the best resignation letters, EVER.
I can't wait to see his next game on the shelves were Best Buy keeps their NES cartridges.
@ThatShortGuy: But he just got here!
Surprised it didn't say, "You know what your sucking when I leave this place? My BALLS!"
That was the best game I have ever played.
Ball's in your court, Totilo.
@UsernameOfTheDead: But is a parody. Not a clever one, but meh. I'm sure he's protected.
@bebop4one: I'm not even in the gaming industry and even I think that's a lame excuse to quit your job. :/
@bebop4one: OMG, quit being a diva.
@ShadowXion: If he made his game at 2K, if he used their computers and their time while he was supposed to be working on their projects, they would then own "his own game he used to quit".
This way he gets to quit, have some fun, and nothing gets to be used again by anyone involved.
Besides, I quit Nintendo of Europe by yelling SEGA! at them. Why not leave with a positive message involving a competitor?
An Excellent way of quitting with out burning bridges, I must say.
Arremer
@doubtful: I like to imagine Tom Hanks becoming T. Hawk and only letting you quit if you win in a street fight.
@TRT-X: If you're well enough to type you're well enough to try it again!
So he'll leave his actually paying job to do indie-games?
Clever boy, I bet he knows all sorts of things about reality.
@jesterspawn: I personally like the part where he doesn't get paid
Epic Win...(and I dont say ever say that)
Maybe I am just dense, but I can't get passed the second part?
This is the best thing I have ever seen!
How could you be pissed after seeing that?
@xAnarChisTx: uh,, ok?
@Derek Rumpler: Problem is it doesn't look great on your resume after working on Saints Row. Especially since SR is one of THQ's premier AAA titles and Spongebob, is not..
That and it really helps if you like the material you are working on since you will be living with for months and sometimes years on end. It's not that weird at all. I don't blame him one bit.
Nocturne
Oh this is the guy who made ROM CHECK FAIL. He can do anything he wants in my book after that one.
@Nocturne:
"it doesn't look great on your resume"
Resume? Testers have no glory. It doenst really matter what youve been on. Youre just a grunt. Trust me, I know. I've been one. For the very same company, even. You could be the best tester out there and find every little bug in the game. None of your hard work will matter because if the producer deems most the major bugs passable (usually due to time/budget constraints) and releases the game buggy, the public blames the testers. You wont ever hear of them being mentioned on polished games, though. It's a raw deal.
"That and it really helps if you like the material you are working on since you will be living with for months and sometimes years on end."
Its a job. You're not paid to enjoy it. THQ makes more less-than-mediocre games than good ones. Good luck thinking youre getting hired onto THQ to test an "A" title. Besides, you end up learning to hate the game after playing the same level after a few months in "overtime mode". Its worse on a game you already hate. ...and worse when your coworkers are annoying.
Wow... This makes me sound really bitter. lol
spline9
@Nocturne:
Yeah, seems like it would be a slap in the face to people in the industry. As Spongebob seems to be entry level material. I wouldn't want to be sent back a couple pegs either...
Invisible-Echidna
@spline9: "Its a job. You're not paid to enjoy it."
O...k, but having a job you do enjoy is a lot better than having a job you don't enjoy, right? If you no longer enjoy your job, then you have every right to quit, like he did, and try to find a job you do enjoy. There's no need to bite his head off just for wanting to do work that makes him happy.
MechaTama31
@spline9:
I don't know if he said he was a tester.... but if he is... well lol.
A game is a game to testers. They don't care if you were on Warcraft IV or Hello Kitty Island Adventures. You're shooting yourself in the foot if you leave a project because "it's not up to your stuff".
Publishers are looking for reliable testers they can move from project to project, not prima donnas that will only do certain games.
WookieCookie
@spline9: um, he never said he was a tester. and I'm pretty sure the article says "development job." Add the two together, and I'm going to assume he's a developer.
bangbangblah
lol nice one!!
@[thatguywiththeglasses.com]
@
@Kenofthedead: You mean winning a street fight doesn't actually count as a formal resignation? Son of a...
@WookieCookie: yep! :)
@MechaTama31: What you said is true, but thats still not what they pay you for. Oh, my response was towards Nocturne, BTW. I wasnt biting bebop4one's head off. ...nor Nocturne's for that matter (despite what I said may come off as).
@bangbangblah: I was speaking of bebop4one being a tester, not Farbs (the dev who made the epic resignation notice). I was just replying to the comments above me. I guess I shouldve been more clear. Oops. ;)
spline9
Yes, quit and give everyone else a seizure. AWESOEM!!11!1
@tokugawa: really.
Vidunder
Awesome!
But it should come with an epilepsy warning, I almost had a seizure at the end.
Cranker
@spline9:
"its a job, you're not getting paid to enjoy it".
You sir, did the EPIC fail on life.
Not getting paid to enjoy your job? OH REALLY? So that means you can't enjoy your work?
Which is weird, cause i enjoy my work. I LIKE my Job. Which is pretty normal if you ask me. If you gotta work 40 hours per week, it seems like a normal thing to me that you pick a job that you like, instead of one that sucks.
zelfmoordkonijn
@bebop4one: Do they still have your job open? I'll gladly work on Spongebob... sounds awesome to me.
Better then what I do. Currently, I code maintance safety software for large power plants and manufacturing companies. Spongebob would be massive amounts of joy for me... especially since I use to love Spongebob (up until the movie... the movie was good... the episodes that folowed, not so much)
lolomfgisuck
@xAnarChisTx:
Your: Possesive
You're: Compound of "you" and "are."
You know what you're sucking when I leave this place?

You know what you are sucking when I leave this place?
You're welcome.
cringer8
@undefined: Wow. Saints Row is considered a AAA game? That is interesting.
@zelfmoordkonijn:
"You sir, did the EPIC fail on life."
Do explain, please. I havent mentioned my current employment status nor how much I enjoy it.
You may be lucky enough to enjoy your job but most people dont. Congrats. I didnt say it was impossible. I was specificaly commenting on bebop4one's job. I'm sure you really wanted to throw me the "EPIC fail" meme but please read more carefully before doing so.
As for any employer, most wont disagree with what you just quoted me saying.
