@Ratosai: It can be daunting but that's no reason to give up. Once you keep practicing, you're going to get good enough to take on the best.

The best thing about the PC version of COD4 is that you've got dedicated servers that are admined by the people playing on the servers. If someone acts like a dick, glitches, etc they're kicked (or banned) by the server admins. It's all about finding the right server.

@GregoriusH: No no, more subtle than that. Kills/caps sometimes give fewer points than displayed. Every time they play, they take 1% more damage from attacks than the previous time. Their grenades have a slightly smaller blast radius. If they take 4x damage they'll just stop for a month. If they keep getting gradually worse and don't know why, that will be the sweeter frustration to visit.

I haven't run into any cheating yet, and I have over 10 days of playtime? But maybe I just missed something? What I really want, and this is more of an Xbox Live problem in general is a way to handle griefers and TKers. I wish XBL would stick flag them, and only let them play together. See how much fun they have when everyone pulls out the RPG at the start of the round and fires it at the ground.

@dkrefft: I think, because the 360 can be modified or "hacked" programs can be written to enable players to actually cheat. Since the PS3 has not been hacked, we are safe from things like that. At least that is what I make of it, I know the PSP has cheaters who do the same thing with homebrew apps like CWcheat.

I reckon the best way to punish cheaters, once they've been identified, wouldn't be to ban them, but to make it so that all other players do four times as much damage against them for a month.

See how much fun they think an uneven playing field is then.

I stopped playing CoD4 about 6-8 months after it came out because of the save-hacking/cheating/glitching players... and based on the number of problems the online game had at the start of it's lifetime and their general response time to things like the SERVERS BEING DOWN, I'm not surprised they are just now getting around to this.

I still don't regret selling off CoD4 to pay for GTA4 or MGS4... granted I don't play either of those games anymore either, but only because I've been playing newer games, not because either one was horrible glitch-ridden that I couldn't take it anymore.

@Befitzero: Doubt it, this could always be done with key binding and scrolling on the PC. Other types of cheats like wall hacking etc. would be handled through PB though.

If that's the case, I'm surprised the game wasn't coded better, to prevent players from manually pressing fire faster than the firing rate of the gun.

I burst tap the M16 in Left 4 Dead and people are always like, "how do you stay so accurate?" It's because I'm burst firing, like any smart soldier should. Meanwhile they are holding the trigger down, going full auto and spraying everywhere except the smoker or hunter.

The only thing I can think of that can explain them is that they are the post-arcade generation and never developed the ridiculously fast forearm/finger muscles that allow you to push a button just as fast as a turbo button.

I recently acquired COD4 (PC) and played the campaign. But to be honest, multiplayer scared me. Here I was, a greenhorn basically, contemplating going into the world of online Call of Duty with all of its dedicated veterans and crazy-good players. To hear of "a fair share of cheaters" in COD4 doesn't help me overcome by trepidations, even if they're "curtailed" for a time.

Oh, another useful tidbit: I once played COD4 online on the 360 at a friend's house. I ended up with a 4:47 K/D ratio. Not pretty.

Um, you've never seen modded controllers be used? I played casually after they existed and would see them at least once a night. Just watch kill-cam more often. If a guy continuously unloads an entire clip in one rapid shot, and his connection is fine, something's up lol.

I've definitely encountered things like people going outside the map and stuff, and recently too. Last one I can remember happened at Ambush, but fuck that map anyway.

It's good that they're finally releasing the patch, but why well into the games life? I imagine that they're hard at work on Modern Warfare 2.

There are a handful of spots in the entire set of maps where you can sorta get into areas that you aren't supposed to.

But nothing as ridiculous as World at War.

As far as 'cheaters', I haven't encountered any in the my entire 1 million point career.

Kinda late for this. I suppose that maybe this was mainly for Modern warfare 2, but since they had the code they decided to just put it in a patch for 4. That way it'd be like a little beta to stop cheaters.

@Ratosai: Yeah, I kinda felt like that when I first started playing on multiplayer. But if you keep in mind that you're playing for fun and take your time getting to know the game without worrying about being on the bottom of the list for a while, you'll find yourself getting good enough to compete with high rankers in no time.

So just play to have fun to start with. Get to know the weapons and environments. By the time you've figured out how you like to play, you'll have probably aquired a decent amount of skill.

@osuzoo08: That's completely false. It's the exact opposite. They AREN'T allowed. Which is why there is no such thing as an officially licensed XBOX 360 controller with a turbo feature.

@JimJD: Oh god... my fingers are hurting just at the memory of it.

The weirdest thing was, even though I did have (and still do have) an NES Advantage, I never really used the turbo on it. Although, I do remember one game where I was having a hard time and I tried to use turbo. The programmers had done something with the fire timing so that if you used turbo it would only fire like every 3 seconds, so you had to tap it out.

@Ratosai: You learn to hold your own even against cheaters with enough practice. When I first got X-box Live, COD4 was basically all I played from the time I woke up until I went to sleep.

After about a month, I was always at around 2.0 K/D. The cheap bastards using map glitches and macro controllers have since dulled my interest, but I still manage to give them a run for their money once in a while.

It's all about practice.

@D4RkNIKON: There are cheaters in PS3 that use glitches to get outside the map zone as dkrefft mentioned. The thing is Infinity Ward never made a patch for the PS3 that fixed some of the issues on 360.

my current rank is 1583 (kills) out of like 11 million, i have 50 days play time, about 20k matches....i have never once seen a god mode hack etc. the only cheats that there are in cod 4 is 1) turbo button (this is what will be patched as it has already been stated as fixed in mw2) 2) lag switches 3)the guy who gets into FFA with 2 accounts....glitching is not cheating because everybody can do it and it6 rarely makes you undefeatable.

Too little too late? Still cheaters in Halo 3 too...sigh.

You know, I think I've played CoD4 multi atleast 3-4 times a week since it came out and have only had one instance of someone cheating.

Somehow they were able to speed up the whole game, and everyone was super fast. It took like 5 seconds to run across a map. Everyone was fast, and the person who did it was laughing.

After I left the game, it was still fast. I had to restart the game. Other than that, I've never seen anyone cheat.

@Art7egacy: My SFIV Fight Stick has the turboness. I've tried putting the RT on, but it's too hard to play switching the stick between RS and LS. So you can sit in a corner and fire away, but nothing else really.

@Ratosai: If you PC game, your 360 experience is a poor measure of your abilities on PC. Control is everything in that game (mouse/pad). Don't be skeer'd. ;) Just keep on practicin'. Heck, if I stop for an extended period (days), I almost have to relearn. Don't let the deaths get you down, check corners, stay low and in cover, sniping on the levels where it's prudent should be good practice. Might also try games with 10 or so players, death comes quick on the more populated servers regardless of skill.

@Art7egacy: Me too. I pull the trigger on the pistol pretty fast. I can hear it in my head now. It kind of becomes a nessecity when getting XP on the sniper rifles before you have the overkill perk.

im assuming that the reason for this patch are the new mods people are doing with their HDs. there are modders hooking up their HDs to their PCs, and modding game save files so they can run around in public matches with god mode, no clip, infinite ammo, aim bots, etc.

while lag switches and modded controllers have existed and been a problem for quite some time, most of the other cheats are new, and pretty substantial game ruining mods.

if they want MW2 to be as successful as COD4, they need to patch this now, and make sure it works, if MW2 is full of cheaters from day one, it will seriously affect the game.

@Smashking0: i got accused of cheating on the ps3 cause i can press the fire button pretty fast on the ps3 controller since its on the R1 button. cant do it as fast on the 360 though since it uses the Rtrigger. i just kept getting messages so i blocked him. what i want though is seamless cross region play, i hate playing agains other regions and either me or they are laggin
