Chris M and liz, I have been a hardcore gamer since I was 8 (21 now) and I had to look up who Cloud Strife was after seeing your posts, so the idea of him being iconic or renowned "even to non gamers" is a little ridiculous to me.

Mario for sure, Pac-Man sure, Sonic yeah, want to say Gordon Freeman because I love him so much but I don't think he's all that iconic to non-gamers, and lastly I wish I didn't have to say Master Chief but yeah he's pretty damn iconic for the new age of gaming.

FTW ^-^ this is because they are (imo) most well renowned game characters to not just gamers but non-gamers.

Don't fully agree with Lara being up there but I guess she's probably more of an icon than gordan freeman is. A larger portion of non-gamers will recognise Lara and the others than they will Gordon Freeman.

I'm so goddamn glad no one said anything stupid along the ridiculous lines of either cloud/sepirooth/aeris being up there. That would make me angry enough to punch a baby :P

Those four are really the most iconic of characters. Each introduced a new facet of gaming into the world (or made it popular). I know Master Chief is incredibly popular, but I definitely don't think he's one of the big four.
