Let’s Tap Trailer
I can’t work out whether this clip sums up everything that’s wrong with the Wii, or everything that’s wrong with Sega. Probably both.

@Derek Rumpler:
Are you kidding? I was all 'SEGA is crap' until I watched that trailer and it rocked my pants.
@armandxp: Your spelling sucks! You need to quit commenting altogether!
No, this clip sums up everything that's wrong with Sega.
+ Watch video
@armandxp: Valkyria Chronicles, Bayonetta and Mad World would like a word with you.
Sega sucks, they need to quit the gaming business all together!!!
I REALLY don't get the Sega hate. So, Sonic Team sucks, the entire company sucks? Let's just piss on years of four great console generations for the sake of our juvenile masturbatory bashing of the crappy games Sonic Team and Secret Level are pumping out?
Sega's probably the only developer that has faith on the Wii as a console that can provide a core gamer experience, not to mention most game reviewers keep mocking it for trying so hard with stuff like Madworld and The Conduit, two games which would most certainly do better in sales on another system.
Screw you guys, seriously.
Ashurahori
I can't work out whether this clip has been properly uploaded, kotaku.
Let's Tap should be interesting - nothing wrong with trying something different, surely?
This game has had some pretty sterling reviews.
@hot_heart: ah, you beat me to it... but I was gonna be more direct and just say "you suck."
But I will concede that Sonic Team does kinda suck, which is probably what this guy is talking about.
(And don't fuckin' tell me that Phantasy Star and Chu Chu Rocket would like to have a word with me... I KNOW!)
No, this clip sums up everything that's wrong with Quicktime and auto playing videos, and this article sums up everything that is wrong with cynical, jaded gamers.
Let's Tap, as goofy as it looks, is supposed to be a very fun game.
I don't know Luke, I think I might like this game. And that's coming from someone who has been excited about Sega's more "core" outings like MadWorld, Valkyria Chronicles and House of the Dead: Overkill. The Platinum Games partnership looks to be pretty fruitful, and Sega also has a few RPGs lined up on the DS that are looking great (Sands of Destruction, Phantasy Star Zero).
At the least, if Let's Tap proves to not be fun, it's a new IP, rather than an old one they are stamping all over ;-)
Who needs parodies when you have actual ads like that?
Crumplecorn
@Lozmaster: They're investing in stuff that's guaranteed to have low sales, but also meant to stir up some love for them in the core gamer crowd. Isn't that what most gamers beg companies to do?
Ashurahori

imikedaman
@Luke Plunkett: But it wouldn't be the Internet without overreaction, Luke :-(
@Ashurahori: While i'm not really into FPS games (ok I am, but they all seem to be too similar for me to purchase a ton of them) and Madworld was supposedly short, I'll give it to them, they've got balls to release this stuff only on wii.
Lozmaster
Well if there's one thing you can say about Sega is that the games they're making nowadays are trying satiate the different fanbases of genre's.Bless their little hearts.
@Luke Plunkett: I was talking about the commenters. Did I even mention you? I said I really don't get the "Sega Hate". Were you even hating Sega?
Ashurahori
@armandxp: Let's not get carried away, eh?
@Mr. Tambourine Man:
Nevermind, it's up now.
Looks okay and more importantly original for a Wii game.
@Ashurahori: No company is perfect. This sums up everything wrong with Sega, not everything about Sega.
Try and lighten up.
What's wrong with fun you guys? It's not like these games break down your door and tie you up, forcing to be played. Who knows, you may show up drunk to some party somewhere and everyone will be playing it and you'll get hooked. And more drunk.

I think it just highlights everything that's wrong with the relationship between a lot of large game development studios and their consumer base all together. The fact alone that Sega feel the need to target casual gamers with this speaks volumes about their confidence in forward thinking 'gamers' to be interested in a novel concept.

This is one of those games with great potential but failed to execute. The controls work amazingly great. The wiimote can actually register some of the smallest taps. Unfortunately, Let's tap only have 5 minigames and they all lack depth.
1> Tap runner is the first game where you tap lightly to run your character and tap harder to jump. It's a basic racer is cool obstacles but the game is very slow paced and the obstacles become repetitive.
2> Rhythm Tap is a music game where you tap to the beat similar to donkey konga or taiko drum master. The colors represent when to hit and how hard to tap. The music is great for JP fans but for those americans, get used to some culture. Also, music pro's will fly through the hardest songs with easy.
3> Silent tap is a mix of a puzzle game and jenga. You take out a piece and hope to make a chain. There are usually only 2 colors and when you take a piece out, the stack in move down and hopefully you make a chain. The game is way to easy, very repetitive and just boring.
4> Bubble Voyager is a horizontal shooter mixed with some jetpack. The objective of the game is to go as far as you can while avoiding enemies and collecting gas. The gameplay doesn't change much so it's quite repetitive. Very easy to max score if you have the time.
5> Visualization is exactingly what is sounds like. You tap to make the screens do things like fireworks or making balls jump. There are no scores or secrets. It's fun the first time but you'll soon notice it's the same stuff over and over again.
I'm not in to gimics but the controls for Let's Tap is great. I never had the problem with the controls and the box included in the game looks cool. It's just for $50, the game just doesn't have enough to make me happy. It felt like a quality tech temo. I do hope that they make a sequal with much more.

Hope it sells well!

Okay, yes its another mini-game compilation and the trailer once again shows us an absurdly happy family playing games in their living room but I actually have some hope for this game being good. It fully embraces its gimmickiness and doesn't try to hide it. Since all the Wii can handle is mini-games and shovelware, might as do it right.

@Ashurahori: I agree with you completely. Around mid 2008 the Wii was pretty much dead to me. Fast forward 2009 and Sega has single handedly made it my favourite console again. Go Sega.
As horrid as that trailer was, I still wanna play this really badly!
Travis Young Faulds
Actually this trailer shows from kotaku's and most of the viewers comments that something is wrong with all of you! Probably you are all consumed by games like gtaiv.. There is nothing wrong with the game as always SEGA show its innovate character and amazes. A simple and fun game! I keep reading reviews for games like Star Ocean, Lost Odyssey, Sonic Unleashed that they suck and all the trash every ignorant writes. Most of you are gamers since 2000 and have no idea what gaming is. West's rise of gaming just ruins videogames! Russians and ghetto boys and how will you kill someone more bloody and violently. Pff BORED!
sybnios
It's got really positive reviews.

@Crumplecorn: the best part is the smug look on the actors faces; as if they were having fun "tapping" their way to victory...
@Ashurahori: You're making sense.
Best way to start an arguement on the internet.
I don't want to tap a box I wanna tap the mom. Also lol this summed up everything wrong with Sega. It seemed like pedos made it at first.
mitch_93
@agies:
How could it possibly be a fun game for more than 15 minutes of playing after taking it out of the box? You just tap your two index fingers repeatedly from the look of the ad. So as much as the sit-down arcade version of "Track & Field" was fun, this game would be fun. At least looking at that commercial.
@Crazyreyn: i agree. the wii is there to provoke innovation. no if only someone would innovate something really good.

A pretty fresh and inventive use of existing hardware?

This trailer saddens me -- though to be honest, I was expecting it when I heard that it was coming to North America.
I'm referring of course to the omission of the coolest thing about Let's Tap: the crazy title music.

The American trailer is all funk but no soul.
trevorbekolay
@Ashurahori: I fully support your sentiments. Sega is also the reason we have the awesome Condemned series. As a publisher, Sega kicks serious ass.

So, is the white box "official" and Nintendo-endorsed? I'm not buying if it hasn't got a logo. A grey logo.

I thought it was en vogue to like Sega again. I know I do.
HotD: Overkill is one of my favorite Wii games. While I didn't have all that much fun playing MadWorld, I applaud Sega for the chutzpe (sp?) to publish it. And the hype surrounding The Conduit pretty much speaks for itself. And heck, personally, I'm looking forward to Let's Tap. Looks like a fun game to be playing drunk.
sepinho
That write up sums up everything that is wrong with gamers and journalism.
I don't see anything wrong with the advert, towards SEGA or Nintendo.
Don't quite get where the poster was going with this one? Perhaps that just me?

Can't wait for the game! But my god that was a HORRID trailer
@Kraznor: HUR HUR HUR
@sybnios: yeah, i agree with being turned off by the rise in western gaming because it has roots in pc games... which have always tried to be more graphic and realistic. things ive never quite enjoyed, and now its affecting the japanese companies.
Looks different, but I would give it a shot. This is why rentals are great.
HeeroYuy01W
@sybnios: I'm wary of Western console gaming too. If I wanted to play PC games I would play them ON my PC. All I have to do is turn down the settings a bit and it looks like a console game. It was a perfect balance: PC for Western games, consoles for Japanese games. I also have a disdain for overly violent games that everyone else seems to get a raging hard-on over. Way to prove the stereotype that gamers are violent sociopaths wrong guys...
Leanid
this trailer is terrible.. i wish they just showed the game.. not the lame family "enjoying" it.
but really, i dont see how this is "whats wrong" with sega. yuji naka is one of the greatest minds in the industry. when sega still made a lot of games internally, this would have been something that would have fit right in with their catalogue. i mean.. project seaman, rez, feel the magic xx/yy, samba de amigo, and a few others im probably forgetting.
in think this game, yakuza 3, and valkyria chronicles are more like sega for me. i mean, ive been a big sega fan since the genesis.. and while many turned away during the saturn era, it only intensified for me. if kotaku existed during those days, i'd have been on here talkin crap to nintendo fans and sony defenders all the way up to the dreamcasts premature death.
sega games always had a feel to them that let you know you were playing a sega game. similar to nintendos feel to their games.. so for someone who has always enjoyed games with that feel.. stuff like bayonetta, madworld, condemned, the conduit, condemned, viking, the club, universe at war, iron man, the hulk, and golden compass dont feel like sega at all to me. sometimes just seeing segas name on there seems odd. sega has had a few new fans lately, which is good for the company.. but im personally not feeling their non-internally developed games.
@Chrisketchum1: In other words, the mini-game collection doesn't have enough mini-games.
Leanid
@fugit: Because they're SERIOUS gamers that only play SERIOUS HARDCORE games. If people don't play SERIOUS games then they're not REAL gamers; they're either kids or old people.

I'm not trying to flame and this is the first I've seen of this game, but what's with the white boxes? are they just like shoeboxes or the gamebox or some kind of dare I say "periphieral"? would be kinda nice if they included little fold together cardboard boxes with the game... for free

@Leanid: yeah.. its a personal preference and i get that, and my preference is not to have over the top violence. its a turn off for me. actually if you look at it though, the console has been home to very little originality genre wise. most genres have their origins either on the pc (west) or the arcade (east). the only thing i can think of that is a console thing is jrpgs.. everything else is either arcade or pc. since i couldnt have an arcade at my house and the console got way more arcade ports/style games... ive always preferred consoles to pcs for gaming.
@Ashurahori: Four great console generations? I remember the Genesis and Dreamcast being great, but the Master System and Saturn being... less so. Now, don't get me wrong -- there were some great games on SMS and Saturn. All I'm saying is that in the grand scheme of things, those systems were far and away the red-headed stepchildren of their respective generations.

It's posts like these that make me wonder why Totilo decided to join Kotaku. I obviously read the site, but the "our opinion is law" arrogance that the writers at Kotaku have is pretty grating. Kotaku had me completely for awhile but I've started to go back to joystiq when I need game news without the hostility and arrogance.

@RubyMars: Saturn was awesome by any measure. If the Saturn was the "red headed stepchild" of its generation what does that make Dreamcast? Saturn sold better than Dreamcast and was in fact Sega's most successful system in Japan (by far). Remember on Saturn there were dozens of amazing games Sega never bothered to bring to America; a mistake they mostly rectified for DC.
In any case, Sega nowadays is a fine publisher, but the games can't seem to get the love they deserve. The Club was one of my favorites from last year, I'd be shocked if it sold 75,000 across all platforms.

@Leanid: For me it's more that Western games tend to be dystopian. The majority (outside of fantasy perhaps) are based in grimy, gritty worlds where life is hard. The japanese tend to make 'troubled utopia' games where humanity has done pretty well for themselves with a desirable quality of life; the only discomfort is the threat from an outside force or betrayal within.
Compare the 'non-game' life of people in the gears of war universe to those in something like Phantasy Star Online. Compare battletech to Gundam. One is almost always dusty, dirty and tough, while the other is a clean, elegant paradise.
I prefer the japanese theme :3
I don't get it. You have to use a box under the Wiimote to play it? Why would you even need the controller? And does the game come with that incredibly plain box? I might rent it, but I'm sure I'd get bored with it really easily.

@thatcreepyguy: Just want to clarify: play with niece and nephew and drunk friends at separate times of course. Its not cool to get drunk when you are watching kids.
thatcreepyguy
@Kenology18: Yeah, this really doesn't look that bad. Now, is this something that I am going to play for hours on end by myself? No. But this is definitely something I could play with my neice and nephew and possibly a few drunk friends.

@Sloopydrew: i agree. how could it possibly fun when you haven't even tried it, right?

@RubyMars: Granted, most people didn't have in those two consoles very fond memories, most likely because they were in the sidelines while the NES and the Playstation made people's gaming dreams come true. But for many of us, we had Alex Kidd instead of Mario, and Nights instead of Final Fantasy VII. And we got our incredible experiences just as well. The consoles were pretty decent, they just didn't have the incredibly big number of games, popularity or third-party support that the others had. Hell, the DC was FAR ahead of its time, offering downloadable content for console games almost TWO generations before it became common.

@Derek Rumpler:
Did you even play Sonic Unleashed, let alone watch that awesome trailer? If anything it was an incredible step in the right direction and that's a plus for the new Sonic Team. It's a decent game in its own right.
Dear god... What's wrong with me? I read that title "Let's fap".
I gotta get some sleep.

@Chrisketchum1: Finally, a critical commentator who can actually put his money where his mouth is. Well done, AND informative.

@Jimbotron: Personally, I just can't games the gamers who game games when they're gaming all the live-long game, you know?

@Chrisketchum1:
that's the problem with most Wii games, and iphone games for that matter... they almost all feel like a tech demo. :(

@thatcreepyguy:
oh, i read it the first time as drunk niece and nephew and was going to give you +10 character for that...
:) haha

@stiltskin:
but... this looks like all you do is tap your fingers on a table... i... i mean... like... what... how do you defend shit like this?
are casual gamers so scared of a controller that they'd rather tap a table than tap a button? or **SHOCKING** maybe two buttons?! and ONCE!?!?!
while it looks mildly interesting, its nothing you can't do with the controller already- heck, it would be more fun on a rock band drum set, setting each pad to a move, jump or direction...
but so far, it looks super shallow.
more adobe flash/shockwave games for the wii, i guess.
how wiieak.

@Chrisketchum1: A logical conclusion intelligently pointing out the flaws in a mini-game collection?
I sense all the blind defenders will be conveniently absent from this thread <_<

@Noodle-Works: Oh no, it's not a button. It's shallow and weak, oh the horror.
Of course, it's also a lot of fun and nothing like any flash game I've ever played.
Who knows, are you so afraid that a diffrent controller set-up where you tap instead of hitting A, that you don't even give this game a chance?
Hell, even if you don't like the game, at least look into how it takes those subtle vibrations into account. It's rather impressive technology wise to detect subtle motions as well as it does.
@Sloopydrew: Because there is more depth and variety behind it's simple premise. Sure you just tap, but is that any worse then just pressing A or clicking the mouse repeatedly?
I say nay as I own Let's Tap and am having a lot of fun with it. Nice diversion on my own for quick fun play throughs (just like the days of old on me SMS, NES, and Mega Drive).
Lots of fun with friends, family, girlfriend to play against each other. Especially the Jenga like game, which is a blast.
The only thing I see wrong is a few people looking for the worst and going directly to just insult or dismiss fun.
Of course, I'm going to enjoy this game as will many others. If you don't enjoy this game after giving it a chance, that's fine.
If you hate SEGA, hate something that doesn't look that hd super def bloody mature ready, or some other cliche and refuse to give this game a chance because of that. Well then you get to live with hate instead of a chance for fun. Though I wonder why that is preferable?
Shame Luke, here I thought you were one of the better people in gaming blogs. Shame about the hate.
@Kraznor: Oooh, so close. Almost not a troll until that last line.

@Chrisketchum1: Nice insight. Though I'm currious, did you play alone or with others?
I found Silent tap to one of the best games, for I only play it with friends and my girlfriend. Half the fun was seeing if you could mess up your what the others were trying to accomplish.

Auuuughgasl;kdjfsd. Music. x___x
Why couldnt they use the JP Trailer music? Please dont tell me they gave the US version a new sound track. ffffff.
GHNeko
I assume the people who are bashing it have played it? I imported it for Christmas and I definitely enjoy it. In the US it's only gonna be $30 so it's a good budget game too ;P
