Metal Gear Solid 4 Goes Budget In Japan
This past March, MGS4 went to Sony’s Platinum budget line in Europe. Now, it’s following suit for Japan.
Hideo Kojima’s swan song for Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, will be released on Sony Computer Entertainment “PLAYSTATION 3 the Best” line on June 18 for ¥3,990 (US$41).
MGS4 went on sale June 12, 2008. Even though it’s one of the biggest selling PS3 titles in Japan, MGS4 still hasn’t reached the million copies sold benchmark in The Land of the Rising Sun. By the end of last year, the game sold 4.5 million copies worldwide.

playstation 3 the best...
we'll see about that
\Gman voice out
Not liking the box a bit too white not enough Snake. Hopefully NA will follow suit sometime soon and it will sale enough to become a GH version so others can try out the greatness that is MGS4.
@Derek Rumpler: That's probably more to do with the high value of the Yen right now.
electroshockwave
@Soyerzzz: I hate the looks they always give 'best of' titles. Like those Xbox Platinum Hits.
lolgreg
@offshore: Does that mean it pays better to work in Japan?
I'd love to pick one up for collection's sake ^^
Something to do with the strong yen and weak dollar or something.

To much white, the box art is so god damn tiny.
Holy sh-$40 is considered budget in Japan?
well maybe if they released trophies and something to clear that konami id crappy thing away. more people would buy it. the time i was playing i found mgo very enjoyable. it just missed 'something'. althought the campaign is epic!
Is MGS4 going to get the Greatest Hits design in US? It already got Platinum and Playstation3 the best, I know it sold well in US, we should see a Greatest Hits version in US soon.
mdo7
This game is so great that we're going to re-release it with inferior box and disk art!
Umm... right.
Reminds me of the time I bought Heavenly Sword second hand because all the new copies were Platinum. Nice work Sony.
Crumplecorn
Retailers were discounting the title a week after it came out in Japan. Here in Canada, I see the regular edition for $29.99 CDN and the collector's edition for $39.99 CDN.
@BigFreakinBoss:
That's why Hideo came up with Beauty and the Beast.
shitty back-stories, average boss fights (by MGS standards) but hot as they come.
Wow, I didn't know MGS4 had sold 4.5 million in 2008. For a rubbish, convoluted interactive movie solely aimed at Kojima fanboys with nothing else to play on their PS3, it sure tricked a whole lot of respectable gamers into buying it!
(In case it's not painfully obvious, I'm being sarcastic.)
Oh well. Japanese people only care about JRPGS... and hentai.
BigFreakinBoss
@electroshockwave: So wait, if I were to have a bunch of yen lying around and convert it to American currency, I would have a shit load of money?
>_>
<_<
*going to consider investing in foreign currency*
@lolgreg: True that. I try to avoid buying 'Best of' titles for the Xbox AND the PS3, both of the box arts suck. I mean, I'm in Europe so I have that disgusting yellow one for PS3.
@Mr. Tambourine Man: True. I didn't care much for the MGS4 bosses. FoxHound, Dead Cell, and the Cobra Unit are clearly way better than SnakeHound (But they are hot).
BigFreakinBoss
why cant companys just put stickers on the shrink wrap to let you know its greatest hits or whatever, i was lookng for burnout for like 2 months before i found a non hits version
Timothy Saskiewicz
I'm surprised it wasn't budgeted sooner.
If was scoring a PS3 this year I wouldn't want to waste time playing a Summer 2008 game that people have already played, beat, and forgotten about when I could be playing a Summer 2009 game currently being buzzed about in Famitsu and talked about at class/work.

@BigFreakinBoss:
Scratch Dead cell from that list and I'll give you a "hell Yeah"
Pycho mantis, the End and the Sorrow are my favourites.
the japanese rating sign looks awesome. not as childish as the german usk rating.
ok great... now what about trophies for this game?
I want to play through it again but I also want the trophies.

@Blates: I agree. I normally buy pre-owned to avoid that ugly yellow or silver. What the hell were they thinking with yellow.

@Mr. Tambourine Man: No Dead Cell? Come to think of it, the boss fights weren't the greatest, but their stories were great. I really liked the characters.

@skik08: no trophies in the PS3s biggest game is ridiculous. no love from kojima productions :(
pharcotix
@Timothy Saskiewicz: They make ugly covers to make people think twice about buying a price discounted version, and the next time they'll feel more compelled to buy the more expensive one.
At least that is my hyphotesis. (sp?)
TheContender
@BigFreakinBoss: Well, the Dead Cell fights were all supposed to echo certain boss fights from MGS1 - Fatman, for example, fights you in a very similar arena as Vulcan Raven did.

@RedRaptor: My favorites are MGS3 Ocelot, The End, and Volgin.
At least this box looks better and is not cluttered like the German version.

@Hugoku: Huh, what? Apparently, it wasn't painfully obvious that my comment was a compilation of criticism thrown at MGS4 by professional haters, not a reflection of my opinion (quite the exact opposite, as it turns out).
My posting history on Kotaku should prove convincingly enough how big of an MGS fanboy I am.
Agreed: sarcasm =/= lie. It's a good thing that my post =/= statement, then. ;)
@BigFreakinBoss: It deserves to be mentioned that no MGS game have sold a million in Japan.

They're having the special edition for $34.99 at Futureshop (in Canada, so that's $29 in US dollars).
I was planning on buying it sooner or later, but with a deal like that, it'll be today!

@Derek Rumpler: It's high relative to where it is normally, but it's not crazy high or something. It was around 120jpy/1usd for a few years, today it's closer to 100jpy/1usd. So, there would be a 6-7$ difference.

@pharcotix:
Maybe I'm weird, but WTF is up with this trophy fetish so many people seem to have?
I get that it contributes in a degree to the replayability of a game, but seriously, this whole "game sucks cuz it haz no tropheeeez" stuff is strange to me.

@BigFreakinBoss: Japanese people dont generally like shooters and as such, even thought MG4 has an online component, in Japan it is largely ignored and they have a lot of pre-owns.

Looking at the history of MGS, maybe everyone's just waiting like me for the different-titled better version to roll along? They always seem inevitable with MGS.

@Laughing Man Redux: Actually, MGO is much bigger in Japan than it is here in America. They have over 3 to 4k people online all the time. America isn't that high up there. It's mostly due to the glitching problem. It turned a whole lot of people off to MGO. Konami has fixed a large majority of the glitches, but they still exist.

@Derek Rumpler: $40 is considered "budget" by Microsoft and Sony in the US too.
@Mokona: $28.68 to be exact... Dang, I should've got the game while I was in Canada 3 weeks ago.. D=
Although, can the game play on the US ps3?

oh god. why do the budget titles have to look so ugly? They definitely give me a reason to buy the original version long before the title goes budget.

@Darth Mingus: That's just a sale at EB the price will go back up in May. I bought it last week for $30. I've been thoroughly enjoying it.
Microsoft fixed there ugly platinum hits box art by not having tiny box art and then Sony goes and makes an even uglier one. Great Job!

@Antiterra: Even if you were being sarcastic, I'm still going to chime in!
I LOVED the previous MGS games. I think I've played/finished all of them. I think. Anyways, i rented MGS4 and it was the worst one I've ever played. It honestly DID feel less like a game and more like a movie, even though I was already well-prepared for long cut scenes. I think it let me play maybe 5 minutes in the first hour and twenty minutes.... the rest was cutscenes- so I turned it off and returned it.
I keep thinking about giving it another go though. Maybe it lets you play a video game once you get two hours in. Who knows. Like I said, I LOVED the other ones.
@Soyerzzz: Agreed. Wonder why they do that?
dgonchild
@fuchikoma: Dont hold your breath.
All that happened before the DLC era rolled in.
@EG99: Oh no you didnt
@mdo7: There's your unofficial MGS4 greatest hits. Amazon has it new for $39.99

@BigFreakinBoss: Dont fret, MGS4 is still the highest selling PS3 title in Japan, dude.
@BigFreakinBoss:
The MGS4 boss battles were awesome, but its true their backstories were "meh" but they were very hot.
Best MGS bosses are found in MGS3 easily.
@BigFreakinBoss: I tried getting a few of my freinds into mgo. They loved it when I was hosting (mostly, the power needs to go back to the hosts like MGO1, if I ever get booted from my own game again I'm gonna quit myself) but it was the constant random kickings and total aversion to teamplay in general that evetually turned them off to the game. I told them it would get better the more advanced they got but they couldn't stick it.
That box art looks like something a 12 year old threw together.
Valnen
@Blates: I think "Best of" titles in general have terrible design choices. But if the publisher is trying to catch your attention, I suppose they've succeeded.
I'd hate to bring up the box art for the Konami's Best version of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow again. Ugh.

@Alex_Mexico:
That's true, and I guess even a major fix like Subsistence could come as a downloadable patch, though from Konami's POV I don't see why you wouldn't try to sell all the hardcore fans another copy of the game...
In any case, waiting this long has yielded a cheaper copy of the game! :)

Why the hell would you care which date the game you want to play came out on? Especially one that is pretty much geared towards single-player.
