Nintendo Power Unsheathes Red Steel 2, Wii MotionPlus Support
The newest issue of Nintendo Power gives Wii owners their first taste of Ubisoft’s sword-fighting sequel Red Steel 2. Looks like the game has taken a significant turn toward the Old West.
Snippets of the June issue of Nintendo Power are now available online, giving Red Steel fans a peek at the next waggle-filled first-person slicer, but, sadly, no screen shots. Nintendo Power seems jazzed about Red Steels 2, with the mag excitedly claiming that “wielding a sword in a Wii game feels as real as you’d always dreamed!”
I was unaware that that was a recurring dream of mine. But I trust Nintendo Power wouldn’t lie to me.
The Nintendo Power table of contents further confirms that Ubisoft will be supporting Wii MotionPlus for Red Steel 2, offering up some pleasant looking artwork.

Other highlights from the June issue include our first look at Don Flamenco in the Wii remake of Punch-Out!! as well as an official review. Watch for it!

@Valkrin: Ugh. Can't play FPS games on the 360 or PS3 anymore. The analog sticks are way too imprecise now that I'm used to mouse control. And while the wiimote control still isn't as precise as the mouse, it is a lot better than analog sticks. It also benefits from being ridiculously fun to do, as proved by MP3.
If this is as good as it should be I'll be all over it.

@Godsman:
Wii Motion plus has another port on the bottom for plugging the nunchuck or other attachments into. Just like the wiimote. Nintendo are not stupid.

I Think We're Property
@Ben9: I would loves me a new Rising Zan game, that shit was fun back in the day.
Rajolae
@IamTheS: Haha, nicely done.
@Heliophage: that was an abomination. thank god for Super Mario Galaxy, which is on the other hand, brilliant.
NMH2 sounds like a better proposition imho.
THIS GAME WILL FAIL!! HAHAHA
From what I know, the Wii Motion Plus fills up the port to the nunchuck. This means that your character does not have any buttons extra buttons for motion to move around. What does that mean? It means this will be a rail shooter like Umbrella Chronicles, but worse.
Godsman
Secretly a Dresden Files game in disguise?
@WildKnightblazer: I said the same thing about the original RS........
Needs bosses!
loempiavreter
@WildKnightblazer: Pssh. He's just cosplaying me.
@Heliophage: You see if the conduit works as I think it will, and so far it is working as I think it will, then the only FPS that will make me go back to the 360 will be TF2, but well I love TF2.
@Heliophage: Not me, I prefer swords over lightsabers, unless you are making me choice between NMH's Lightsaber and a sword.
@CamoZombie: I wouldn't call it phenomenal, I got it on PC a month ago for cheap, and it really did frustrate me with how repetitive some of the missions were, how boring the combat was and even how limited the assasinations felt. And don't get me started on the bloody in game cutscenes.
It was decent for what it did, but it could have been done a lot better. Hopefully AC2 will get it right.
Combine
OH MAN! Simon Greedwell from Sunset Riders making a cameo in the lower right-hand corner! "Bury me with mah money!" top five multiplayer SNES games for sure.
@란: Oh no, OOH NO!
I agree Red Steel had its good things, I enjoyed it to a ertain point, but the multiplayer, that was horrible, it just wasnt fun enough not to mention every destructable environment was now indestrutable. Why the hell is it I keep shooting the damn aquarium and it wont break?!! not even with grenades!
I've said it a million times before, and I'll say it again;
people can bitch about Red Steel being a piece of shit all they want, but you CANNOT deny the sheer epic awesomeness that was the 'bounty' multiplayer mode.
Truly took me by surprise with how frantically fun it was. I really hope they include the same mode in the sequel
@Hellicus:
I suppose I have no choice.
@Derek Rumpler:
The music was okay, I think. I'm trying to remember, since it's been a while, but I don't remember complaining about it in particular.
--
On the positive side, there's tons of room for improvement, and Wii Motion Plus is a great way to bring some of that.
@Valkrin: Sword play?
@Heliophage: honestly though, knowing that the game was rushed for launch and if you can ignore the bug, red steel is a pretty decent game. the multiplayer was actually fun as well.
@Boom-Chicka-Ah:
That game is from Ubisoft so no, it isn't
alfredofroylan
@Valkrin: Graphics really don't matter to me in a FPS, if the mechanics are solid. WildKnightblazer was right mentioning Metroid Prime 3, that game was absolutely superb!
GoemonEbis
Ahhh, shoot, where have I heard that promise before...? Hmmmn...
AH! Oh, right, it was the first Red Steel. STFU, Ubi.
@ashdown:
Metroid Prime 3 works. Though, Bioshock came out around the same time and did much better.
It's hard to really compare unless you look at multiplatform titles. Like Call of Duty 3 or World at War, though I have no idea how their sales compare.
@Gorilla Snow is Maximum Risky: Oh, shi-
@Valkrin: Red Steel is a million seller...
@bfwings55: Pics or it didn't happen!
@Valkrin: Remote pointing/aiming. It's akin to keyboard/mouse gameplay, except on a console, and way more immersive than any 360/PS3 shooter.
If done right, of course. The first one stumbled badly. I'm personally hoping this and The Conduit will show what Metroid Prime 3 has already shown: when developed from the ground up, FPSs can be awesome on the Wii.
WildKnightblazer
@CosmicElement: Assassin's creed is a phenomenal game, A lot of people just had way to high expectations.
Red steel did suck though.
@namesRhard:
That would be lightsabers.
@CosmicElement: You're a bit off there. Killzone 1 didn't deliver, killzone 2 did. Use that same analogy to Red Steel and Assassin's Creed. The only difference here is that Red Steel and Assassin's Creed haven't had that sequel to redeem itself.
@Valkrin:
IR precision aiming perhaps? Exactly why I prefer RE4Wii over RE5 (bad example, not fps).
ashdown
@CosmicElement:
His point was that the "fool me once" wasn't applied after the first Killzone.
@Heliophage: I liked the premise and the music. It had one of the most beautiful game soundtracks, IMO.
There was a time when a cut scene would skip on me. I was like, "WTF?" until I reset from my last checkpoint and they skipped again.
The only other time I had errors was on a new copy of Spider-Man 3 for the Wii. That also was a buggy, albeit good (IMO), game.
But I liked the last fight the best. That was truly awesome.
Sad thing is, I never could fight right either. Most of it was dodging and being lucky enough to land a hit in.
The first one was nowhere near as bad as people make out. Its not terrible in the slightest. It does have its bugs, most of which are hilarious, so I didn't mind those at all. The sword fighting was cool, and was what people should have expected if they had common sense, 1:1 sensing was obviously not going to happen. With motion plus support the sequels sword fights could be even better.
Its the gun portions that need improvement over the first, the aiming was not tight enough, but the bullet time line up the shots thing was awesome, I hope that makes a return.
Looking forward to it. I expected it sooner.
@Taku128: Probably because they now have more freedom to work with 3rd party companies rather than pushing Nintendo's 1st party stuff.
@Heliophage: I love Red Steel. You shall consider me a fan.
@Gorilla Snow is Maximum Risky:
I'm naked under my clothes. :B
Is there even a demographic for this game, or any other FPS on the Wii for that matter? The people that want FPS games probably got a 360 or a PS3. Even if they own a Wii, why purchase a graphically inferior FPS for the Wii when the good FPS' are on other consoles?
I'm sure some people will pick it up, but it won't sell as well as FPS games on 360 or PS3, and it definitely won't sell as well as Animal Crossing or Mario Galaxy on the Wii....
So what is the motivation for FPS on Wii?
Valkrin
@Taku128: I <3 Nintendo Power. Boy and the Blob reveal? Yes please.
@Derek Rumpler:
The comic book-style cutscenes weren't executed well either in my opinion. Almost to a laughable degree. I felt the same about the story, and the characters, and the mechanics.
The only thing I liked was the premise.
@Heliophage: oh good u missed the horrid ending xD
Merch Wnek
@Fernando Paramo
See, the difference is that Killzone 2 delivered.
Red Steel and Assassin's Creed didn't.
CosmicElement
"wielding a sword in a Wii game feels as real as you'd always dreamed!"
I was unaware that that was a long running dream of mine.
For serious? I thought that was everyone's Wii dream? :/
@Wolf_Dog:
Say they guy who was hyped by Killzone 2 way before the release.
Fernando Paramo
Just please make the art style more interesting than RS1, Ubi, and you'll earn another sale.
I hope they add some wild west steampunk elements... and I hope that they use graphics similar to the artwork, kinda like the Prince of Persia game...
Ubisoft has two chances to prove that they can make more than Petz games: the Rabbids game and this one.
They just need to use a good engine, and have a small bounding box to aim, like Metroid Prime 3 or The Conduit, and not a huge bounding box like the first rushed Red Steel.
At least the artwork looks way more appealing than the original setting.
Fernando Paramo
i hope this isn't nintendo's big announcement for e3
Is he naked under that trenchcoat, or something?
but we already have WET coming our way
Hey, it can't be any worse than the original.
ev1l_er1c
Spore hero?
GUITAR HERO SPORE CONFIRMED!?!??!
@Heliophage: I finished it within a rental period. Good game, if you can overlook the bugs.
Geez, why not go ahead and rename it Rising Zan 2 while we're at it?
Ben9
Woah. I did NOT expect this. AT ALL.
But this is freaking amazing.
Nintendo Power is getting more and more exclusives, it seems.
Hm. Seems odd, especially given the setting of the previous one. I was hoping for something else more Yakuza-centric.
I'll have to see. I'm one of the few fans of the original, despite its bugs.
I've been dreaming about that since I got wrist spasms form playing No More Heroes.
Pogman
rising Zan the sequel!? gunna pop that in the ol ps3 for ol times sake....
No thanks Ubi. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Same goes for AC2
Why is it Nintendo Power has been getting more exclusives now that they're NOT owned by Nintendo?
Awesome. Guns and blades.
I never expected a western theme
Dude in a trenchcoat with a motherfuggin' revolver and a sword?! DAY ONE.
WildKnightblazer
"Red Steel fans"?
There were some? I still haven't finished it because of how unbelievably terrible it was. Which was frustrating, because I was excited to have it bundled with my Wii.
@Taku128: I think you just answered your own question.
@Heliophage: I loved the first Red Steel for what it was. If this one isn't rushed it has the potential to be amazing
CujoEtner
@bfwings55: Yeah, it seems alot of games are announced, or first previewed throigh Nintendo Power these days. I jsut got a subscription, so that's good news for me.
SadAstronaut
I like the art. Looks very suda51. Which I love much more than pseudo-realistic crap.
Red steel is okay. I played it and it was good!
squall3031
@Heliophage:
I liked it, but the controls hurt my wrist. Unfortunantly, I stayed noticed this after I read the IGN review. :D I don't see what everybody means by bad graphics, I think they look average/a little bit above average.
sentroshi
@pinoy78:
You are so very unlikely to get 1:1 for a number of reasons.
1. It would eliminate any challange, in that you can just swing your arms around maniacly and defeat anyone without any challenge, as the AI could not possibly be programmed to defend itself against your random swinging.
2. What happens when your and your opponents swords collide, with nothing in the real world for your wiimote to 'hit', you would follow through with the swing, whilst your character would not, thus the orientation of the wiimote to the onscreen sword would be incorrect.
@WildKnightblazer: The art certainly looks good. No argument from me there.
@Godsman:
Instead of trolling, you could actually read up on M+'s convenient Nunchuck port
Derp.
ashdown
Saw a sweet cowboy samurai wielding a sword and i 'jizzed, in my pants'...
Steffanic
@Heliophage:
If you took Red Steel at face value then you would realize that it's not so bad. A rushed launch title is all that it was.
It's got my interests....now POLISH the HELL game Ubi-soft! Give it perfect 1/1 controls with a dynamic control system and you've got my hard earned cash.
pinoy78
@aden.exe: I agree with you. Red Steel was pretty solid, save for bugs and the harsh reality of not 1:1
That looks vaguely like the Thundercats logo on the back of his trenchcoat!
So... they gave Caleb from Blood a sword?
The first one was glitchy, but fun as all heck. I will definitely pick up the second.
@Hamzah Fukasurname U-aintGot Clearence:
May be, hopefully wii motion plus solves the problems I mentioned but I can't see how it could truely be 1:1 when in real life there is nothing for the wiimote to collide with.
I don't know what the likelyhood of them trying to make it 1:1 would even be, they might just use it to make it more accurate and allow for more complex movements and combos or something.
@Strider-Kojiro: if you look at it when it came out it wasn't too bad but the price did drop rather quickly
@aden.exe: What your describing would seem to be a broken game, by your definition WM+ is therefore broken, it'll be interesting to see how "right" you are this june.
Hamzah Fukasurname U-aintGot Clearence
@jjammerzs: RISING ZAAAAAAAAN....SAMURAI GUNMAN. RISING ZAAAAAAAAAN......JOHNNY NOOOOOOO MORE
@Heliophage: I think by "fans" they meant people who saw the potential in the game, regardless of how poorly it ended up being executed. Red Steel 1 looked like it had some interesting ideas even if the actual game was bad, so I'm excited to see the sequel fix these problems and maybe, just maybe, deliver a quality product.
theenglishman
I rather enjoyed the first Red Steel. Can't wait for this.
madman83
@CamoZombie: I thought Assassin's Creed was just a bad game. Kind of like a rock with a picture of a naked lady painted on it. Not fun to play with, but nice to look at.
Red Steel was neither of those two things. So, a turn to a more western style and somem Wii motion plus support can only help, I think. I'll add that I've sworn off all UbiSoft games after buying Prince of Persia.
man. that artwork looks pretty neat. i never experienced the first game, but if this one is minus all the bugs and rushedness everyone talks about that plagued the first one.. ill be all over it. i kinda like ubisoft.. and they support the wii better than anyone esle besides sega and capcom.
heres hoping kotakuers 10 years from now will be talking about this game like some of us talk about goldeneye. in my opinion.. if youre going to make an fps only for a console.. especially one with weak online.. have an amazing local multiplayer with bots.. and it will still be just as good.
S=I wasnt a fan of the first game, but since this one uses motion plus Ill give it the benifit of the doubt
Alonzo1948
The first Red Steel felt like it was trying to be too much. Hopefully they can work with it and make a great game with this one. Already I'm hyped about it.
NeonLight
I enjoyed the first one, it's no where near as bad as people make it out to be -- it's no classic, but it's competent.
@Tidusx100: You know what? It was okay. I mean, it is a launch title, I shouldn't have expected much, but just... it bore me before I even finished the game. And upon finishing it? Bleh. traded it in.
We'll see for the second...
@WildKnightblazer: I loved the first one, the sequel looks to be better. (Going off of concept art here.)

@Valkrin: "Is there even a demographic for this game, or any other FPS on the Wii for that matter?"
Are you really *that* out of touch with reality?
Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Metroid Prime 3, Conduit, and now this.
Stop trolling.
ShingoEX
@Wolf_Dog: I guess you passed on street fighter 2 because Street Fighter 1 was so terrible.
ShingoEX
@SadAstronaut: i was a subscriber for like 10 years... I miss it.
*goes off with credit card to reclaim his subscription*
@Heliophage: I'm a fan too.
It's of cause more entertaining to read trollish people complain, whine, and puke shitty comments all over.
You might have missed the genuine opinions in the mess.
Cavefish
@Wolf_Dog: Assassin's Creed gets to much flak.
Yeah it did have some boring parts. But the storyline kept me engaged. And the stealth kills were very well done.
It definitely was a good starting point for a series. Now they need to build on it with AC2.
As far as Red Steel goes, I was excited for it up until the reviews basically tore it apart. I didn't get my Wii until about 8 months after it's release date and never got around to it. The sequel seems interesting though so I'll keep it on my radar.
KillaB43
Ah, once again, the "dead" media of print magazines gets the jump on a game. Take THAT, gaming websites.
Jimbotron
Rising Zan 2? why not indeed?!?
babel116
@란: I'll give you multiplayer, but the game was ugly, slow and had nothing original or exceptional about it. And the controls sucked. Big time.
