Sony Computer Europe Head Unaware Of Crackdown Devs Existence
David Reeves is retiring from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. In his retirement announcement, Reeves stated he plans to spend his time “trying to repay society” from all he has taken from it.
Admirable, but rumours swirled that Reeves was repaying society by taking a “senior position” at Crackdown developers Realtime Worlds.
Realtime wha? says Reeves. “I’d never ever heard of Realtime Worlds until someone asked me about them a couple of days ago,” Reeves told industry site Develop. “I can honestly say no, that rumour is not true.” And we can honestly say as head of Sony Entertainment Europe, David Reeves should know major European third party devs.

@reno84:
LOCAL here being A WHOLE CONTINENT of studio's.
I'm not head of SCEE but off the top of my head;
Free Radical
Eidos
Rockstar
Crytek
Lionhead
3D realms
Evolution Games
As well as local studio's of all the big players like EA, Activision etc.
[www.datascope.co.uk] - just go here and scroll down, this is the ones just in UK. Some will be PC developers, middleware studios, but most are games studios and publishers.
@Pyrefly: And what a lot of people discovered after is it was actually a good game and picked it up anyways despite the beta being over.

@[en.wikipedia.org]
That may be true, but they still are the largest Scottish developer and winner of multiple awards for Crackdown so based on sheer size and reputation alone they should be in the realm of David Reeves' knowledge.
And technically it's their second game although I never heard of or played their first one.

@Mike Newlad: "Crackdown, one of the best games this generation has spawned"
I wouldn't say that. Might be a good game but not even close the one of the best this generation.
boots555
@metallicorphan: Truth, though I don't know why you limited it to PS3. It more fun than 90% of stuff I have played on any console. It's just a shame games aren't scored on fun.
Mike Newlad
@Jandlecack: I'm from England, Crackdown is tied with N+ as my favorite games on the 360. Yes Gears is a masterpiece and Bioshock had the best graphics/atmosphere of any game I have played but Crackdown was pure pick up and play madness. It ruined GTA for me because it had fun gameplay that made GTA feel restrictive.
I take your point that the game only sold 1.5 million copies world wide 1 million of which were in the US but for a game released in 07 on one platform that's pretty good going.
The point is, Crackdown is among the few good exclusives that the 360 can dangle over the PS3. It's parallels with inFamous show they were clearly looking to fill the same void and putting it with the Uncharted 2 Beta, also hints that they were thinking about Crackdown. For him not to know who they are would be a big surprising to me.
Mike Newlad
@reno84: Bear in mind that the average PS3/360 gamer is probably better informed on who-developed-what than most industry executives. I don't think the latter spend as much time as we do reading blogs and videogame websites.
From here on out, I fully expect Kotaku and the rest of the gaming press to quiz all industry executives on their knowledge of small developers (especially those with such striking names as "Realtime Worlds").
I'm not defending Reeves just for the sake of it - I mean, the only reason I love the guy is precisely because his insane statements usually make me laugh out loud.
But in this case, I think yer all making a big thing out of a very small matter.
Of course, if a similar thing were to happen with Aaron Greenberg or Reggie Fils-Aimé, we'd see just as many people (from other parts of the spectrum) jump on their case.
@reno84: Point taken but I was talking in a broader sense. A major dev is sth like Ubisoft Montreal in my opinion.
That explains why SCEE is doing such a great job. my sarcasm ends here.
Bernhard Binder
@Jandlecack: David Reeves is hardly "any Xbox 360 owner" though. He worked as a major player in the European games industry. And it shows a fairly startling lack of knowledge of his LOCAL industry players when he isn't even aware of the existence of the dev that put out one of the breakout hits of this console generation.
well Crackdown was ten times more fun than half the stuff that i have played on the PS3
Dear David Reeves,seen godfather 2 or are you a fan of Sun-tzu?..yes?.good...here is some advice
'keep your friends close,but your enemies closer'
@Kommissar Kayce: +1
WordMan
Realtime Worlds is not a major third party dev in Europe or anywhere.
A major third party dev in Europe would be the now "deceased" Free Radical. Companies with a history and a couple of great games under their belt.
Go out in the UK and ask any Xbox 360 owner if he knows who developed the game "Crackdown". Guess the results.
@Kommissar Kayce: Oh No You Didn't just say that did you?
P.S LOL you made me giggle for a bit.
"David Reeves should know major European third party devs"
MAJOR?
are you SURE about that? I hadn't even heard about crackdown until recently, the only reason i know about realtime worlds is cos theyre company is about 40 miles from where I stay, and I stay about 10 miles from rockstar north who are infinately more Major than realtime worlds.
Primebuster
@Mr. Tambourine Man:
@Pyrefly:
It's Brain.. what else would you expect? There have been many news like that lately. :-/
As long as they release crackdown 2 soon i dont care who knows of their existance!
teeps1981
@cavalerie: yeah thats what i thought too :P
@cavalerie: I would agree if that was a game like "ShellShock 2: Blood Trails" but these are the developers of Crackdown, one of the best games this generation has spawned not to mentioned the game that inFamous is most compared with. You know the other sandbox, super powered game that was bundled with a beta.
It's not like it was just any beta either, it was a beta for Halo 3, Sony's biggest competition franchise-wise.
So yeah, they might not be as famous as Capcom but I doubt the head of Sony Europe had no idea who they are. It sounds more like he was playing down their role sort of like how you pretend to forget the name of your ex-girlfriends new partner to down play his importance.
Mike Newlad
@Mr. Tambourine Man: it does indeed. This was an off the hand question regarding his retirement. Like someone else said, the Crackdown devs made 1 game for one console that, although fairly good in it's own right, didn't sell all that well and made most of it's sales off the back of the Halo 3 beta. He doesn't have to know every dev anyway, especially considering this dev has never had any association with Sony ever.
Its okay. Realtime seems to be just as unaware of the PS3's existence.
Reeves was also quoted as asking: "Realtime Worlds? Didn't those guys make Teddy Ruxpin?"
@Elchris: Ignore me, you guys totally posted that already.
*goes back to corner and puts cone shaped "D" hat on*
But in other news Gary Dale has heard of realtime worlds

"Sony Computer Europe Head Unaware Of Crackdown Devs Existence"
This title reads like a SUN headline.
Maybe even a News of the World one.
And we can honestly say as head of Sony Entertainment Europe, David Reeves should know major European third party devs.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Realtime Worlds have only developed Crackdown for the xbox360.
I wouldn't call them a major developer after only one game on only one console.

@Black-Dog-Howls:
"Not many people actually cared about Crackdown until after the fact."
"many purchases were made for that FFXII demo."
And you know this from who you said?
fronsac
@Black-Dog-Howls: sadly this is true, but then again if you diddnt buy Crackdown for the game, but because "omg its a Halo 3 beta!!" then your one fucking moron and shouldnt even be gaming imho. Halo is complete crap, I personally was a lil mad when I herd that crackdown was going to come bundled with the beta. Why? because I knew that would be the main reason why the game sold.
I bought crackdown for crackdown. I played the Halo 3 Beta once, maybe twice...but that was it.
If the competition is using talent from your own backyard, and you don't know about it, you got problems.
@NoHoldsBarred:
Well it's no wonder you didn't play their other game, it's not out yet.
cavalerie
@Billkwando bought his tickets for Hyde's US tour: You mean they didn't?
@Mike Newlad: Crackdown initially sold because of the Halo 3 beta. Not many people actually cared about Crackdown until after the fact. Kind of undermines the game when it sells off a demo. Sort of like Dragon Quest 8 outside of Japan - even though that turned out to be a grand game many purchases were made for that FFXII demo.
Black-Dog-Howls
@Bernhard Binder:
Yeah, almost outselling the 360 and that had a year head start. They must be devastated.
@metallicorphan: You should play more games on PS3 then.
Crackdown was fun, for the first world. After you open more you find out it is the same thing over and over. Bosses are just full of bad guys and have 'bullet proof armor' ....
would have been cool if they had powers too.
@fronsac: We call him "Mr.Logic"
@NoHoldsBarred: You sure about that?
Because, ya know, there's this little company out there by the name of Rockstar.
@Jandlecack: I wouldn't be using the name of a company to define how major it is. The titles it has released define it more than name alone.
ShingoEX
...He's an executive.
He's not going to be talking to devs on a daily basis. He has other job roles. Why the hell should he know who Realtime Worlds are? It's not like they developed for 'his' console.
As for "Oh, it came with a halo 3 beta, the biggest compblahblahblah".. It's a beta. A beta. No one cares. Except the rabid fanboys of the series. Everyone else is happily wandering around not caring.
Should he be reading up on a game because it comes with a beta of a game that is competition for 'his' console? No. Why would he. What could knowing who Realtime worlds are have done for him at that stage? Nothing. Nothing at all.
Had Realtime Worlds been slated for a PS3 game and then switched sides, then sure, maybe he ought to know who they are. But they didn't.
To me, this is not news. Just an attempt to make someone look a bit foolish. It won't work, though, because frankly, it's like telling an English major that they don't know about Thermodynamics. No one gives even half a shit.
@Kommissar Kayce: Nice.
Nitro378
Pretty pathetic if you're unaware of a developer that had one of the first sandbox games out on 360 that was a huge success because of a Halo 3 Mulitplayer beta that now Sony just happens to be mirroring for the release of infamous packed with a multiplayer beta for Uncharted multiplayer if you preorder. Gee I wonder where they got the idea? I'm calling BS because the Uncharted 2 beta promo was just announced and that had to be thought up and planned weeks ago seeing as how Infamous comes out in less than a month.
Tyr4nt
how dare he not know 'halo 3 beta' developers?!?!?
@Kommissar Kayce: I don't know man, but i highly doubt that that is true.
@ShingoEX:
Crackdown is their only release. It's great, but until they release several more good games they can't be put on the same mantle of UK dev's like Free Radical, Lionhead n Rockstar
whos david reeves?
....joking!
@Kommissar Kayce: Hopefully it'll stay that way after MS and Bungie helped promote crackdown with the halo 3 beta and Sony turns around and practically insults them.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
@D3m0n1k_Ang3l: Complete crap, except the fact that it's fun as millions agree, has a lot of good online modes, cool features like forge and the camera thing. Doesn't even have any good maps or good levels at all? Must be complete crap eh. When people say popular games are complete crap I can generally guess they stupidly attatched an abnormal amount of hate on it for merely being popular. To have nothing good to say about it shows your not even subjective. I disliked uncharted but it's not like it had no good points. Maybe your just chucking out terms like complete crap to get a point across but in that case I disagree :p
Anyway Crackdown was largely considered a good game. It's impossible to tell how many would have bought it without the beta but in the end the beta was only there to promote it. I doubt everyone will claim Infamous is average and people only bought it for the uncharted beta even though that may be the case for a lot of people and it's the same situation as with halo and crackdown. Seriously it's probably just kids hollaring to try and degrade crack down despite most people admitting it was good.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
Realtime Worlds is "Major"?
Okay, I get that they made Crackdown, but seriously, whether you loved the game or not, it only sold larger numbers because of the Halo 3 beta.
sascha23
Someone at SCEE not aware of something in the industry? I am shocked!
Well in his defense it's a MS game the devs developed. Yeah it's a very thin one at that but who knows?
Makes me think of David Reeves and the other old codger in suits. Does anyone think they really play the games on the consoles they represent? I mean it's one thing for CliffyB to talk about games and whatnot but David Reeves? Or maybe Kutaragi?

@Mike Newlad:
"It sounds more like he was playing down their role sort of like how you pretend to forget the name of your ex-girlfriends new partner to down play his importance."

@fruitsofherwomb: um, what? where in that post you quote was the 360 mentioned? selling a bunch of units just below the competition =/= success. he could've referenced the dreadful service europe gets when it comes to PSN compared to N.America
ithyphallus
Well, if they were such a major developper, I doubt Microsoft themselves would have treated them the way they have by not letting them develop Crackdown 2.
Boulayman
@tripping_balls: i wonder if we all know who the "uncharted 2 beta" developers are
ithyphallus
@fruitsofherwomb: bawwws he doesn't like your taste of games.
and same thing over and over? did you miss the variation of the boss levels? or are you making shit up to try to discount crackdown since it was on the 360?
ithyphallus
@ithyphallus: whoops that obviously should've gone a few posts down.
ithyphallus
@Jandlecack: but of course if the king of europe sony didn't know realtimeworlds, nobody knows them amirite ;)?
ithyphallus
@tripping_balls: but who knows the "uncharted 2 beta" developers?
ithyphallus
@Jandlecack: well as a non-360 user you wouldn't know (obvious from post history). when you start up crackdown, realtime worlds is very present.
ithyphallus
@sascha23: *cough*
a playable demo. those things sell a game too.
ithyphallus
@ithyphallus: I like that you insult him for stating he has a different opinion than someone else and then turn around and explain why his opinion is wrong. That is funny to me.
Anyway, I thought that Crackdown was a lot of fun, but you actually thought that there was variation of the boss levels? Really? The "missions" were the worst part of the game. It really was just a bunch of weak enemies in different building surrounding a slightly stronger enemy. They were all the same and very easy.
But I still thought the game was great. Jumping around the buildings, finding orbs and just playing with the world was a lot of fun. For the weekend that I rented it. I felt that I got all the enjoyment out of it that I could in that timeframe.
DemiurgicSoul
So how exactly is he going to repay society for taking Lik-Sang from us?
misterdna
@cavalerie: Considering the game has sold almost (when I last heard) 2 million copies as a European next-gen title it's kind of a big deal.
Was that supposed to be cheeky and coy?
The dudes with a million selling game founded by the mind behind GTA and Lemmings?
The guys who had the Halo 3 "beta" packed in with their game?
Those fellows who opperate out of europe, the very territory I cover?
Should I have heard of them?
GorbyGipper
@sascha23: Same goes for Infamous then?
