The Dog-Sledding MMORPG

Forget Night Elves and Orks! Korean developer DevCat Studios has something different in store with its latest MMORPG Husky Express: dog-sledding.

And not just dog-sledding, but puppies. Players raise their dog-sledding team and make deliveries to snowy outputs. Higher level dogs bring different skills like smelling goods to determine their quality or leadership abilities that help the pack jump crevices. There are traditional MMORPG elements like story quests and equipment upgrades.

But most importantly — puppies! Check out the game’s trailer.

@Salen: screw alaplaya! Because theres IP issues in Australia for S4 I cant play it in New Zealand

  • protoman

This is the first MMORPG that ... I actually want to play. Damn it!

losing dog team gets to be the main dish at the victory dinner!!!

    @WildTengu:
F'ing PETA. They used to show up at our races and events to protest dogsledding. Bunch of uninformed, overfinanced rejects with nothing better to do.

Except in rare, prosecutable cases sled dogs are treated with the utmost care. They are on specifically formulated diets that could qualify as gourmet cuisine when compared with your standard store bought kibble, they receive better medical care then most athletes, and they are born and bred to run and pull. To deny them that would result in a lot of miserable dogs.

But nooo...PETA has decided its cruel and unusual. The dogs that we love and cherish and partner with are clearly our animal slaves desperate to be freed from their human opressors. F*** PETA.

What no Malamute/Wolf? It needs Balto!

    @Derek Rumpler: oar = ore

  • Derek Rumpler

People are going to joke about this, but in some ways, it inspires me.

After watching the trailer, it is apparent you do things such as raise your pet, go mining for what apparently seems like oar and other things.

Now think about it this way. Provided its true to dog sledding, many people (primarily kids) are going to learn some things about it.

I think more MMOs could utilize this and I think its amazing Nexon would make a game like this. I would like to see more of these things, not to replace learning via traditional methods, but to supplement it and make learning more interesting.

  • nworobes

This reminds me of how I'm pretty sure it's canon that between the end of Metal Gear 2 and the start of Metal Gear Solid, Snake retired alone to somewhere in Alaska and took up dog-sledding.

Is there a manlier combination than solitude, the Arctic, and a sport which involves commanding beasts to work for you?

@MrGone1980: One more 'crappy' joke, indeed. I chuckled. A redone Deadliest Catch and a good Ice Road Truckers game would make this a great trilogy, all of course narrated by Mike Rowe.

I want the expansion that includes a playable Governor Palin and snow machines. Muahaha.

  • dr1v3n

I would play this. I wouldnt pay a monthly fee for it (as Cygnus said above) butr it seems interesting and I'd give almost any MMO a chance. Yay for puppies!! lol

  • Pentex

    Developed by DevCat! lol

    Pentex

  • indyit

@Cygnus_Mal: yeah would actually be pretty interesting to play... would probably be pretty grueling to play... but still in a flight simulator sorta way would be compelling to play.

  • MrGone1980

hold on, hold on, I got one more crappy joke:

"This game was alright, but I wasn't crazy about the RANDOM DROPS..."

    g'night folks, tip your bartender...

  • embef

    Cute dogs.

    embef

  • PaxtonAstypalaea

Wow, you too? I'm waiting for that day, as I think that's the current release date of any of the Higurashi Games in English. It seems to be the release date for a lot of stuff.

    PaxtonAstypalaea

  • Salen

Oh dear. It's too damn cute for words. But alas, I think I'm going to stick with S4 League for my anime-ish online gameplay. That probably has to do with the large number of anime weaponry you get to use against the opposing team though.

  • Mancomb Seepgood

Holy crap just what I've always wanted! A dog sledding MMO. This game is gonna be so awesome!!!

    /sarcasm

  • MrGone1980

this is gonna give mob "sleighing" a whole new meaning.

  • Vidunder

    I hate you.
Now I have to wait for the day of NEVER when it's going to be released in English.

    Vidunder

  • Netnavi

@Cygnus_Mal: agree. Something realistic would make a great game. Having to think of how to survive in the tundras and stuff.

Or if they went the cartoony route, than go with Balto (also based on real events)

great now I want someone to make this.

  • WildTengu

PETA is gonna love this game.

    WildTengu

  • Cygnus_Mal

You know I'd totally play a dog sled racing game, maybe not a monthly fee MMO, but I'm totally down with the game concept. But I'd want it more gritty and serious, and possibly narrated by Mike Rowe, not the anime inspired kawaii crap that this game appears to be.

  • Wahrheit

Oh dear, well, for those playing Eve as traders I guess...

    Wahrheit

  • SeraphX2

    @Wahrheit: lol

  • Deathbearer

@WildTengu: PETA hates everything to do with animals doing anything remotely fun. See they're just a bunch of assholes looking for something to bitch and moan about, and I'm sure they'll turn this into some kind of "Slave labor" thing just for an excuse to get pissy.

    Deathbearer

  • MrGone1980

    @Trowble (XBL/PSN): Watch it again, I think I saw a Malamute.

  • wtf_G

    Iron Will.

    wtf_G

  • MrGone1980

@Convair 990A: Fantastic! I think Palin might be The Deadliest Game.

I kinda think that Japan seems to have less of a problem with creatures pooping than we do (see: the internet) so I imagine it will be a feature in the game.

Now if you combine dogshit and Palin into a videogame you might get my MMORPG money.

  • jayntampa

I think it's pretty awesome to start having some MMOs where you compete, but don't have to kill/attack/destroy things. There are still a ton of opportunities out there for interesting games with other people running around doing stuff.

  • Kamakazie

    omfg it is adorable.

    Kamakazie

  • lolomfgisuck

Sweet... so when does the "Hobo's Hitchiking" MMO come out?

    lolomfgisuck

  • Kobun

@Derek Rumpler: That mining clip bugs me. Why does every MMORPG need to have stupid mindless grinding? Why can't any developer try and make a game that doesn't involve mining... even when it's about dog sledding of all things! :/

  • Indiedog

This is going to be Free to Play with microtransactions.

    Indiedog

  • kagekiri

@kagekiri: O wait, I forgot: it's pretty much Nintendogs in half that trailers. So you can raise dogs. No personal appeal to me, since I've got a dog, but that would probably be enough for many people.

    kagekiri

  • kagekiri

@Cygnus_Mal: Yeah...something about the sheer lack of any survival stress makes this feel rather shallow. Every dog sled movie or book I've seen is about something going wrong and surviving in a blizzard hundreds of miles from home.

What's the point, exactly? Nothing to fight, you're gathering...food? To feed to dogs, or make another sled? I guess you could race, or trade goods between outposts, but that seems weak still.

Another somewhat off-putting thing would be thousands of dog sleds (assuming people play it..) going across the same trails. They're not even bleak artic wastelands, it's just a white highway.

    kagekiri

  • Bauske

    Aww, puppies!

  • belo

    LOOKIT TEH GAWDDAMN ADORABLE DOGGIES!

  • PsycheE

@icepick314: So wrong, but so true.

    PsycheE

  • Trowble (XBL/PSN)

@MrGone1980: Yea, I saw a malamute, but it wasn't part wolf though. :(

    Trowble (XBL/PSN)

  • RendiaX

I wouldn't mind giving this game a try. I kind of hope they will end up doing a big race once a year along with the Iditarod.

  • RendiaX

@nworobes: He mentions it a couple times in MGS. Once during the first time you get to the Wolf Dog den and if i remember right, I think he also mentions in the briefing videos that he was training to run the Iditarod as well. As an Alaskan my self, i remember being all giddy the first time i heard the game would be based up here back when it came out and the fact that Snake was retired here was the icing on the cake =P

  • sentroshi

Oh boy another mmorpg, but instead of fantasy elements it has dogs,er puppies. Hooray. *struggles to smile* :D

    sentroshi

  • robotco

@Vidunder: why would the trailer be in english if they were never planning to release it in the americas?

    robotco

  • sirmarcelot

puppies? how the fuck puppies are supposed to able to carry me around?

    sirmarcelot

  • exdi

Pfft, dog sledding. Some old Apple II game did it first. Not The Yukon Trail. You had to go around helping villagers. Anyone remember this?
