TimeGate And Paramount Reach Section 8 Agreement
TimeGate Studios once again successfully defends the name of their game, reaching an agreement with Paramount in the lawsuit over the name Section 8.
TimeGate filed the lawsuit earlier this month, after Paramount sent out a press release announcing an interactive web series called Section 8, days after cancelling a meeting with TimeGate regarding their game. According to an official statement released today, Paramount has agreed to not use the name for their web series, and TimeGate has agreed to drop the lawsuit without prejudice.
As mentioned in our original post on the lawsuit, this marks the second time that TimeGate has had to protect their trademark from big media companies, settling out of court last year with ABC over a proposed Section 8 television series.
I just hope the game turns out well, because Section 8 would have been a great name for a TV series. Just saying.
@zoompooky: I haven't heard a Jamie Farr reference since Weird Al's "Everything You Know is Wrong".
Look it up, it's a great "style parody" of They Might Be Giants.
There goes my pitch for the sequel to Valkyria Chronicles where the whole team become psychotic due to poisoned ragnaid packs : VC2 : Squad 7, Section 8
@Grind_Axis: I dunno, Star Wars and Star Trek are both pretty generic. Well, more descriptive than generic, but you get the idea.
@Lekolo408: And that would be the Catch-22...
looks like this artwork of starcraft 2 [www.irserious.com]

@McDollar:
Axis and Allies is one of the best WW2 RTS's ever. You just don't get the base building in other WW2 games (makes sense, but still), that alone made it money IMO, especially considering it controlled like Kohan!
GtheMVP99
@ParadeDC: Already taken by Ghost In the Shell.
@cristiana: Yeah! How come nobody makes a game about that! I mean there is sim city...
final_cut
@BallPtPenTheif: Or how about we call it "Halo"!
@fELIXADER:
BURN!!
Sir, I believe we are in agreement.
@Akua: I remember! Ghost in a Shell!
@ParadeDC: that'd be ghost in the shell ;)
@ParadeDC: Section 9 belongs to something too, but I can't think of it yet.....
Unless this game is about someone who was discharged from the military for mental issues, any section number should do fine.
@final_cut: SimSlum!
Isn't...Section 8 the name of those government housing places?
...Just wondering.
its nice how that pic doesn't bring back images of starcraft2 or anything.
...which will soon be followed by a lawsuit from Flagship Studios for ripping off armour designs from Hellgate: London.

@NekuSakuraba:
Yep, its federally funded housing for low income families. Usually in the "bad" part of town. Robot ghettos where the first thing that popped into my head.

I would really like to see more from Section 8.
I think their information on the game is quite limited.

They should've went with Section 9, pay some homage to Ghost in the Shell.
The game had an interesting trailer, but that's it.
Based on Timegate's track record with the F.E.A.R. expansions, this game is going to be horrible.
Good thing they have all these lawsuits to get the game out in the public eye or no one would know it even exists.
This game was announced months ago and the official message boards for the game have only 161 posts.
damn, what's so special about Section 8 in particular? Any number would work
Section 8(this game), Sector 7(Transformers)... Next is Sect 9(???)
"No! We want a vague non-descriptive sci-fi/military term for our project!"
Section 7 would be way better for a TV show IMO, maybe Section 13. Hell, Section 88 would even work.

@KillerBee: Or maybe they are actually Nuckin FUTS! If that's the case I'm in.
Two lawsuits about the most generic name ever given to a sci-fi project?! What's wrong with those people.
Grind_Axis
@uppitycracker: Section 8 is a fun play on words though. It a discharge from the military for being bat shit loco.
makes you wonder whay the ghost in the shell team hasnt sued TimeGate:
'Section 9', anybody?
@Glitchigo: Section 8 is a military term meaning that a person is mentally unfit to serve. I think they are trying to say that the characters in the game are so hard core that they are labeled "crazy" by other soldiers. Lame.
Well then HUD should sue the shite out of TimeGate, because TimeGate is tarnishig the name of those who have been stricken by poverty and can't afford nice places.
Damn you TimeGate, you don't know anything about the world around you, do you?
Really, the only TV show I can see called, "Section 8", is either poor people humor or something like "the office."

@KillerBee:
+1, i was going to say exactly this. i love space and robots as much as the next guy, but it's hard to be excited about this project.
axis & allies was alright, though. meh.
@KillerBee:
Timegate only ever had one good game- and that was the original Kohan + expansion.
Given that they have an MMO in development, I expect them to be bankrupt in 5 years.
arstal
@Glitchigo: It was the Army code for discharge due to craziness.
In TF2, you can occasionally hear the Soldier use it in a taunt.
arstal
@Glitchigo: Section 8 is a millitary term for someone who has been ejected for some sort of mental instability.
That's why I'm wondering how they can really trademark a term that should be found to be in 'common usage'.

I hear Jamie Farr is suing them for their Trademark over "Section 8" which he claims is his under fair use.

It would seem that they met with these studios to work someting out to either cross into the game, TV or movie, and the studio's said no thank's and decided to use it anyway. It's pretty stupid on these companies part to try and move ahead with something like this thinking it would go without notice, despite the fact that TimeGate isn't a widely known name. Someone will always find out if your stealing their shit. Hopefuly the game is worth all the fuss they're making over it.

@KillerBee: well they used it because anyone who dives headfirst in to war has to be crazy or just mentally unstable.

@Zallin:
Which makes perfect sense when your box art is a generic robot standing on the moon.
It should have been called "Robot Moon Stander Guy"
