Wolverine Behind-The-Scenes Teases Secrets

The latest developer diary video for X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a dirty, no-good secret snikt-tease.

Developer Raven hasn’t so much created levels for the game as they have crafted environments for players to romp about it. Forest environments; jungle environments; snowy forest environments – they’re all represented here. It’s all very interesting, until they get to the end of the clip, when senior artist Cory Carani (my favourite member of the development staff) is about to reveal a big secret in the game, only to have Doug Smith (boo) ruin it with his damnable secrecy.

Curse your secrecy, Doug Smith. Curse it!

    @goldwings: oops the "to" after like (relate) shouldn't be there. That just sounds wrong.

  • mat1cs: reaching for that thing.

    I love how that dude sitting on whatever-the-hell-that-was at around 0:45 has no idea that he's being leapt at hahah

    mat1cs: reaching for that thing.

    Behind the scenes.

    Well if that isn't irony...

  • playa787

    I wonder why they didn't name this game "The chronicles of Wolverine"....What? Everybody else is doin it

  • kreepmode

    Deadpool as a playable character!

  • goldwings

    My guess is other playable characters, but the way they're laughing, I'm wondering if it'll be something of a joke. Baby Wolverine costume skin - UNLOCKED
    Fahey I can see how you like (relate) to Cory Carani ;)

  • playa787

    @SagiMewtwo: Ha HA, Money.

  • SagiMewtwo

    You can play as Stan Lee himself. All he does is run around, throwing guys and shouting "Excelsior!".

    SagiMewtwo

  • playa787

    Also it looks like Wolverine can fly now

  • playa787

    I dont know but these developers are extremely overconfident in their game. Praising the hell out of it. I think you should be a little more humble about it. Just in case your game tanks, you wont look like a douche.

  • Steffanic

    I bet it's one of those "You're gonna get to see a..(Sentinel)", "We're gonna keep it a secret". When in fact, the Sentinel has already been shown :P Ya know?

    Steffanic

  • Duin

    @Duin: Don't get me wrong, Barakapool would be interesting from a game play point of view, but it's not Deadpool.

  • CrypticMetaphor

    I really hope this game is good.

  • Duin

    @kreepmode: Real Deadpool or the abomination with that name in the movie?

  • ShaggE

    @playa787: "So, here's our new game... we gotta tell ya, though, it's not all that great, in our opinion. You might like it just fine, but we really phoned this one in. It's got... like... levels, and characters, and such. It'll definitely be interactive. Jimmy in Accounting voiced all of the characters, so don't expect anything fantastic there either. His falsetto is crap. Ummm... so yeah... buy it, or rent it, whatever. It'll be out sooner or later. Meh."

  • Gorilla Snow is Maximum Risky

    The hype for this game flies over my head. It just doesn't seem like anything noteworthy.

    Gorilla Snow is Maximum Risky

  • Krackatoa or...

    @Duin: So true. Although Ryan Reynold's Wade Wilson isn't that bad. Barakapool was downright stupid.

    Maybe they'll fix him for the game. *hopes*

  • Dr. Tobias Funke (analrapist)

    @Gorilla Snow is Maximum Risky: exactly...God of War has been phenomenal and I'm not a huge comic book guy. My friends will probably get it, so I'll maybe borrow it. Typically games that draw this much hype are huge letdowns (see Haze ;-))

  • HyruleMonk

    @playa787: Metal bones, flying Wolverine! Makes sense...

  • b-radicate

    @Steffanic: Twas what I thought.

  • joshfigueroa

    It be nice to see unlockables of the costumes for all the characters, including the bad ass character turned abortion in the movie Deadpool.

  • IntegralDarkness

    havent seen it mentioned much but at comiccon they did show the classic yellow costume. maybe thts all it is?

  • DragonNinja

    @joshfigueroa: A couple of online stores have the Classic Blue and Yellow outfit as a pre-order bonus.

  • wef

    I miss games that I could rent for a weekend and really really enjoy. Like in high school. Me and the boys would rent random games based solely on the box art and the tag lines, usually getting in arguments over which would be better Bruce Lee fighting or Godzilla. This was before I checked the internet on a daily freakin basis for my game news. Before the hype machines drove what could be really enjoyable experiences into disappointing ones. This is precisely the game we would rent. The advertisements for this game will ruin it. I find most games that go to the lengths of posting 'dev interviews' on their own volition tend to suck, and suck hard. Perhaps if they focused less on these pat on the back spots we could approach the game with a sense of mystery; not knowing what to expect and not having any pre-conceived notions of the game.

    Back in the day, I would have rented this in a second. And I'm pretty sure it would have rocked...

    ...for a weekend.

  • Sullyville

    @b-radicate: I thought the secret setting was 3-Mile Island.

    Sullyville

  • Jnas

    God, these developer guys are annoying.

    They're so smug...it's sickening. I wouldn't be suprised if they started smelling their own farts.

  • Albert Chen

    People, Hulk. We're going to get to see Hulk.

    Sadly, not the RE one, but still, pretty awesome.

    Albert Chen

  • Teancum

    Seems like everyone's counting Raven out. Remember they've got a GREAT track record. Soldier of Fortune 1/2, Star Trek Voyager Elite Force, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, X-Men Legends 1/2, Quake 4, Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

    Yeah, I'm not worried.

    Teancum

  • kreepmode

    @Duin:

    Screw that Baraka bullshit. I'm talking about real Deadpool. Wade MFing Wilson from the comic books.

  • Krackatoa or...

    @Jnas: Dude. They're not actors. When the person directing these videos says "Alright, try to sound as psyched as possible" what did you expect from a bunch of guys who work on video games all day?

  • KindredWarr

    @Teancum: I'm with you. If it wasn't for Raven's previous games (especially MUA and the X-men Legends titles) I would be ignoring this game, but I got hopes and may end up getting it.

    KindredWarr

  • CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

    @IntegralDarkness:
    WHAT!!!!!
    FUCK SEND ME A LINK!!
    I wont touch this game enless I can play as wolerine,

    You had better believe it true Believers.

    CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

  • missnicolec

    They worked on this thing for like 2 or 3 years right? They had a whole lot of extra time? I'd probably be bragging about it too honestly - that much work into the game and then the game being attached to the movie...

    missnicolec

  • CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

    @ShaggE:
    Nice I was gonna pull that one on him too but there you go ShaggE. Beating me to the Punch.
    @playa787:
    Ya gotta believe in your product or else you risk producing shit. Even just them releasing this video has people like yourself talking about it which works in their favor.

    CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

  • Chibirazi

    @SagiMewtwo:
    Haha oh man that reminds me of the simpsons episode where he visits the Comicstore guy and tries to become the hulk.

  • Kanji08

    @wef: Devs always hype their games. They WANT you to want it. Who the hell is going to say, "We worked 2-3 really hard years making this game and we think it turned out kinda sorta alright. Maybe you'll like it, I guess." If you don't want to buy into the internet hype machine, then don't look into it.

    You're like a fat person saying, "Man, I remember when I used to buy whatever food I thought looked good. Now there's all these health tables and nutritional facts that make me watch what I eat and it just completely ruins the experience for me!".

    Kanji08

  • CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

    If I cant play as Wolverine from the start of the game I aint buying this.
    I will not submit to playing to whole game just to unlock the real wolverine.
    you got it? Im not playing as fucking hugh JACKMAN!!!!

    CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan

  • FaceFisted

    @kreepmode: DO WANT!

    @playa787: Supposedly, he can push his muscles beyond the limits of the human body because he heals so fast. Makes sense... sort of.

  • LostChild

    Here's an idea for you Raven. Make a true X-Men game using the Wolverine engine you have now, have the X-Men characters in the same 3rdperson view, with the same over the top God of War action, same graphics, same open enviorment, with 4player drop-in/drop-out co-op. Make sure the title of the game reads X-Men only. Plus, make sure none of the characters are based off any of the movies. (Stick to the comics.)

    Oh yeah, I really hope that big secret is not being able to play as Sabertooth. Taking on Alpha Flight or Wendigo would be much better.

    I'm sure Barakapool is going to be a playable character...
    In a $4.99 add-on, of course.

    @wef: I'm with ya. I used to just play games that looked fun. And usually, if I went in with no preconceived notions or expectations, I'd get at least my rental's worth. And if it was worth a purchase, I'd buy it. That was my system for a long time. Now I'm just all jaded. Internet reviews and previews, then playing games without paying for the longest time... I had no stake, ya know? I don't have to enjoy this, I didn't spend anything.

    But yeah, I'm sort of impressionable in that. I always took people's recommendations as a way of broadening my exposure to media. The unfortunate side-effect is that if somebody tells me something is bad, I can't go into it not expecting it to be bad. I still haven't finished Blue Dragon, and I know I would have really enjoyed that game if I'd gone into it without expecting it to suck.

    Also, Kanji, your simile is a bit off. Well, at least in tone and severity. I mean, an average person can pay five bucks to rent a game like this, and have enough fun with the experience to justify the five dollars. It's not like, "The taste of the food justifies the heart disease," that he's saying. But back in the day, I rented State of Emergency for the PS2 and had a blast. Was it a bad game? Yeah, sure. Do I regret that rental? Hell no.

    When you make a habit of checking in on every preview and hands-on and review (it's hard to not) you can lose some of that experience. Just going into a game clean, without any expectations, and being pleasantly surprised when even a bad game offers enough fun to outweigh its setbacks. Like EDF.
