Xbox Originals Brings The Payne
Rockstar injects the Xbox 360 with a double dose of gritty film noir and slow-motion gunfire with the release of the first two Max Payne games as Xbox Originals.
As foretold by the ESRB last month, both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne are now available for purchase and play on your Xbox 360 courtesy of the Xbox Originals program. Both games will set you back 1200 Microsoft points ($15.00 in real-world money), which is a small price to pay for washing the taste of Marky Mark’s performance in the movie out of your mouth before Rockstar releases Max Payne 3.

@globones: You haven't lived until you've dove down a stairwell while rotating 180 degrees & shooting.
Stranglehold is even better though. :p
Whenever I hear anything about Xbox originals or Virtual Console, I take a look at Sony and I facepalm hard.
For the one company which seem to tout their downloadable classics harder then than their competitors, they really are pitiful. PSX has one of the most amazing libraries in history and what do we see on there? Magic Carpet. I've never seen someone not try like this, because I can't feel it's very hard to convince someone to put their decade-old game up for download and the chance to get some more money.
Yet we heard Sony proclaim they are "looking into it". But outside of Japan I can't say they actually are. In Japan they listen to what people want and release classics such as FFVII, Metal Gear Solid, RE 1-3 and even Xenogears.
In the US they have the original Suikoden (which was their "Christmas"-gift, and thus something out of the ordinary) and Castlevania SOTN (which has been rereleased into infinity lately). But those games are exceptions, and normally they get games like Street Skater, which no-one would bother with since by todays standard such a game has not aged well.
Europe is even worse off, though, despite being a larger market for Sony than the U.S. being. Here we get our one good game, Silent Hill, pulled after not even a week, for some ungodly reason (probably due to the new re-imagined Silent Hill, though that makes little sense since it would only get people MORE interested in that game). And normally we get games such as Disney's Hercules that isn't even released in all parts of Europe.
It makes no sense!
@NoBullet: And why would you buy anything used? Are poor or something?
Striker5005
@globones: You have to play it for the story and the original gameplay.
Striker5005
@ShadowOdin is sad he missed Wyatt Cenac's visit to Sweden:
I think he's right. Movies aren't usually games.
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: *Shudder* I hate mazes in video games, but never ever so much as the ones in Max Payne with the screaming baby and sobbing wife and, oh, you fell, start at the beginning whaa whaa whaa. I would have quit if it weren't for walkthroughs. It was horrible.
@XxSnowblindxX: I'm sorry I can't take your opinion of a SCRIPT very seriously, you clearly have a very rudimentary grasp of the English language.
God, this is a ripoff :( But I guess that's come to be expected by now.
@GraywolfofMibu: I think you're lying
@Archaotic: Yeah, you get that, I get that. Sony is too busy not trying to release classic games on PSN so they don't have time.
In fact, they have so little time they remove the good games they actually release *cough*Silenthill*cough*
@Archaotic: Yes, Sony should DEFINITELY be doing this as well, especially with PS1 games. M$ on the other hand needs to stop with the Xbox Originals. They charge way too much for them and do not have an effective storage solution given that their hdds are proprietary.
Let's see..... I could pay $15 a piece to download these games and take up precious hdd space, or pay less than $5 for both games on a actual disc. Wow, that's a tough one.... I will have to get back to me on that one. Looks, like I am off to the crapper to ponder this one.
@oosiegewolfoo: I'd prefer they just charged 5 or 10 too but just because you can get an old game for $1 doesn't mean it being re-released on live should only cost you $1.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
Trust me when I say 'Movie =! Game'
@Archaotic: I'd rather MS just released them quickly rather than waiting for cross promotional opportunities but it is better than nothing at least.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
Maybe I'll get Max 'Paybe'. Is that a typo to the right of "Read More"?
@globones: I'm not usually into action shooters but this game was pretty good and I enjoyed it.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
"Wahlberg played the titular character in the Max Payne film based on the popular video games. Even though he played the character in the film, he has stated that he is not going to play the games."
What an idiot, didn't even bother to do any research on the character he was portraying.
Self_Destructo
@globones: One of the best sequels of any game series, perhaps even better than the original (IMHO). A must play for any 3rd person game fan. :)
diebroken
I can't play any of the Max Payne games after watching the horrible movie (it was so horrible, I couldn't finish watching it).
all fairness to Mark, the films skript was terrible. dont hate the actor, hate the dialouge. but tbh, i thought it wasnt really his type of role.
I loved the ending of the first game when you finished it on the hardest difficulty.
KingHippo
That should be $15 for BOTH. You can find these games used for $5.
[www.amazon.com] I could pay 15$ for the first...or just get it used for 1$
Or the second [www.amazon.com] for 2$.
Microsoft sure knows how to steal peoples money.
@globones: They help define the way a lot of games play these days by setting the standard for 'bullet time'. Yes they are a must play!
Hey Sony, see what Microsoft's doing? Releasing classic games on their marketplace as cross-promotional marketing for new, upcoming titles?
THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE FUCKING DOING. How do you not get this!?
That Max Payne... I wonder if he has anything to loose? :/
Were these games any good? I was never really interested when these games first came out.
"Bang you're dead Max Payne!" - Vladimir Lem
OoOO, this definitely makes me a little jealous
Techknow
Its gonna take a lot to get rid of that taste...
The screaming baby dream sequences in the first game were more bearable than his performance....
Ew.. who the hell wants to play Max Payne with a controller? Let alone an Xbox controller.
This is a PC game.
@chucklebuck: I...don't know how that is possible.
Sounds so off.
@diebroken:
Yeah I agree, the sequel is more polished than the original. And they took out the stupid ass levels where you're walking on brain nerves. Only thing the original does better is the parking lot level.
mellowspaz
@Techknow:
Just get it on the PC. Much better graphics, controls, and no aiming assitance (the requirements should be low enough to run on any pc now). I actually bought this last week on ebay for around $10.

@Kenzya: Games are more often movies than movies are games

@ShadowOdin is sad he missed Wyatt Cenac's visit to Sweden: The worst part for me is that one of my very favorite PS1 games, Vigilante 8, is not available on PSN but is available on the XBox Live marketplace. How does that happen?
@NoBullet: You can get both games on Steam for that price.
[store.steampowered.com]

@ShadowOdin is sad he missed Wyatt Cenac's visit to Sweden:
I would love it if Sony decided to put Metal Gear or some other classics on the UK PSN, but the price would have to be right.
moonrad
@ShadowOdin is sad he missed Wyatt Cenac's visit to Sweden: What's wrong with Magic Carpet? That game's amazing. I still play my Sega Saturn version.
@Kobun: Isn't that a bit of a silly attitude though? You can't just say 'Oh, but the 360 is backwards compatible' - that's suggesting that everyone who fancies playing, say, Max Payne, Black, Ninja Gaiden or (god forbid) Zapper has the means to track down a copy of said game on the original Xbox format and go to all the trouble of buying the disc, getting it home and storing it. Alternately, you can have it in virtual form in a virtual store available whenever the hell you like... which is more convenient? How many people would get to experience delights like Sega Soccer Slam, Farenheit or Psychonauts without the Xbox Originals plan? Not many, I wager.
And speaking of Sega Soccer Slam, anyone know why it's only out in the US for the Originals program? As a UK resident, I'm gagging to get hold of it again - it's a brilliant game, miles better than the Mario games that came after it from the same group of people... (I don't think I'm wrong that the Next Level guys all came from Black Box)
UnkleBuck
That's all well and good... except you can get Max Payne used for like $2. I remember about 6 months ago I was at a Gamestop and bought both Max Payne games for the xbox for I think $2 for Max Payne 2 and $3 for the first one. Why pay $15?
the XBOX originals are in just as sorry of a state as the US PSN is with PS1 games.
@danterandal19: Love them both and continue to play them both.
I really wanted a sequel to MP2 years ago. Must admit I am very nervous/dubious about MP3. Doesn't look like they understood the ending of MP2 (alternate or initial).
Thriceborn
@NecronomiconUK: Neither do you...
"I'm sorry(You should have used a comma here; however, a period would have worked also.) I can't take your opinion of a SCRIPT very seriously,( Using a comma here is wrong. You should have used a period.) you clearly have a very rudimentary grasp of the English language." I would also have to say that using the same adverb twice in the same sentence (or what should have been at least two sentences) is a sign that you lack a VERY strong vocabulary.
Your comment should have looked like this:
"I'm sorry. I can't take your opinion of a SCRIPT very seriously. You clearly have a rudimentary grasp of the English language."
Or maybe like this:
"I'm sorry, but I can't take your opinion of a SCRIPT very seriously. You clearly have a rudimentary grasp of the English language.
Or better yet like this:
" "
@NoBullet: I agree...those games are great...but I have no reason to buy OLD Xbox games on Xbox live when I can get the original game disc for less than 1/4 of what they're offering it for. I don't understand why this seems like such a popular thing to do. What benefits come with paying $15 for a game when you can get it cheaper elsewhere?
CreativePlug
@Mr.SithNinja: I agree that it needs to stop. The 360 is backwards compatible aside from the arcade version. This would make sense on PS3, but it just seems like wasted time and money on the 360 better suited to generating some good original content. That said, people must be buying these offerings enough for Microsoft to continue the practice.
@globones:
The first game is very solid and still holds up today, so if you're looking to play a little bit of history, go for it.
Max Payne 2, in my opinion, is one of the best games I've ever played. Honestly, I felt that the third-person shooter was perfected with this game- spinning in an circle, going all slow-mo while killing tons of enemies with only two pistols has to be one of the most exciting moments in video games, period. I replay the game yearly just to experience it all over again.
Suffice to say, I like these games (although you may be better off buying them from Steam, just saying).
@ShadowOdin is sad he missed Wyatt Cenac's visit to Sweden: Grandia just came out on the Japanese PSN :D
Do these play in widescreen, or are they cropped 4:3 like the other XBL Originals?
@XxSnowblindxX: And YES, I do realise it should be 'That's'. Honestly though, I don't give a flying fuck =)
Moral of the story: You, My funny looking friend, are a dick
@NecronomiconUK: thats because im japanese
All of you complaining about the price have to remember that not everybody lives in the US and can find xbox 1 games for really cheap.
In Japan, if I want to buy used xbox games depending on the game I have to pay quite a bit of money. E.g. Fable 1($30-$40 used), Ninja Gaiden Black($30-$35 used), etc. I ended up just getting of these off of XBL Classics as it was cheaper (and having an Elite 360, space isn't as much of an issue for me)
smbu2000
Hum...how are these games played with a controller compared to the PC version?
I played both of these games on the PC and i´m afraid it won´t be the same thing.
@ak416:
Having played both versions, I greatly preferred the game on Xbox. It feels like a console game to me, since it has that film noir feel and just seems right to play/watch from my couch on a big screen with surround sound.
jcb231
I'm sure we never will, but I'd LOVE to see sales reports for Xbox Originals games. They must be selling, otherwise the program wouldn't have continued this long. But at the same time I can't imagine why people are buying them. The games are not optimized for the 360 beyond the basic backwards compatibility, they offer no new features, they offer no achievements or Xbox Live play (unless the original title offerered Live) or anything else new. Plus they take up a larger chunk of valuable hard drive space than most arcade games. All that for 15 bucks? I could buy both of these games on disc, quite likely sealed new, for fifteen bucks and have cash left over. Heck I could probably buy three or four or maybe on a good day FIVE Xbox Originals on disc for about 15 bucks. If I went the used route, it would be even easier.
I can't imagine why anyone would buy these, unless there's a whole subset of folks out there with a deadly fear of discs or unfilled hard drive space.

@KingDavid73: Because second hand copies don't reward the developers?
2c-b
@Mr.SithNinja: Wow you took all that time and though and all you ended up doing was looking like a douche.
@SeedyXX needs a plastic drum kit: Turn right every time you can. works the same for the blood lines in the dark. I figured that out and I was like 14 when this game came out. Come on now!
I rather buy both games of Steam for €15,- instead of paying twice as much of Xbox Live.
TimmiT
@xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx: Actually I think it should. Because if I can buy it for 1$ used the company gets no money. But if they release it for $1 on Live then they get $1 they wouldn't get.
Dammit. From the headline, I thought it was a Tyler Perry game.
God damn, just bring halo 2 on the originals already.
*cuddles used and beat up halo 2 disc*
xXSlayer77Xx
@ak416: I played MP1 on Xbox and MP2 on a PC. Both played well. I think its the reliance on slow motion which means the game doesn't rely on fast/accurate inputs, not that MP is a particularly demanding game.
Mokon
@chucklebuck: The version on XBLM is a complete disaster of a port/update. Don't try it, all your memories will be ruined. It's that bad.
That said, do we in the US even have Magic Carpet? That'd be a highlight of the service for sure. In any case we have not gotten a single PSX game since Suikoden and some others on December 23rd of last year.
Mokon
@potatojenkins: Uh, no. The PS1/PSN situation is worse. That's what's so frustrating for Playstation owners, the library is there and it's awesome, and Sony hasn't done dick with it.
KaneRobot
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino:
the movie MAY have been horrible, but i had the best audience. when you see the flashback of max's wife and the baby and then the reflection of the guy in the small mirror, a black guy in my audience just whispers "DAMN....." when everybody was quiet. the whole audience cried of laughter for the next 5 minutes.

@Xer0Ph0kus: I was going for "over the top douchiness" to expose his douchiness and ended up in the douche-end with out my floaties..... I hate it when that happens....
@UnkleBuck: You're saying it's unacceptable to tell a person wanting to play a game to purchase the game? There are over 100 copies of Max Payne on eBay right now, the vast majority for $1-2. It was a major release; if someone wanted to play it, then he/she has played it.
Sure, paying $15 for a quick access download is more convenient than a $2 eBay/Amazon/GameStop purchase, but is it really worth it? Xbox Originals offer no improvements or additions to Xbox games, and you're stuck playing whatever title Microsoft decides to trot out. What would you tell someone wanting to play Panzer Dragoon Orta or Beyond Good and Evil? Pray that appears on Xbox Originals at some point in the future? No, that's why the person bought a backwards compatible 360 in the first place.
Including this Max Payne update, the 360 now offers 29 out of 950 existing Xbox games as Xbox Originals. Microsoft is averaging a game or two per month. I'd hate to be near the end of that waiting list.
@mellowspaz: Do they work with Vista?
Remi
@Snappywave needs subtitle option to enjoy games.: The only similarity is the rogue cop killing bad guys who happens to be named Max Payne.
I only played the first, and it is worth it.

No, I'm not going to play a maze game unless it's Ms Pac Man. Besides, one of the mazes had multiple levels and you had to drop down and land on the path or start over. Sucked even with the sound off, those horrible horrible sounds. nothankyou.jpg
I bought this game new for PS2 5 years ago for $29.99. When I got my 360 I wanted the better graphics and bought it used at EB Games for $2.99. So $15? No thanks.
@Archaotic:
Personally I detest the use of the word "Original" when releasing multiplatform games on XBLA.
Halo = an Xbox Original.
Max payne = Rockstar Original.
CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan
@CRRRUNK -AKA RedRing O'Houlihan: Rockstar wish ;) A Remedy original!
@Mr.SithNinja: Couldn't it be considered a screen play as well? ;-)
JoJitsu4u
@danterandal19: I had the first on pc and actually bought the second on XBOX from an Amazon seller for like five bucks after I got a 360. I still break it out all the time.
JoJitsu4u
@SeedyXX needs a plastic drum kit: I was pretty young too, but that really wasn't so bad, especially on pc where you could just quick save with one key after making decent progress. I also have to say the music was perfect for those portions of the game. Didn't it rain blood on at least one occasion?
JoJitsu4u
Thank God.
I played through the first game just last summer, and I would really like to play through #2 before the third comes out.

@Remi: Max Payne 2 does. Max Payne 1 runs, but it's screwed up.
DukeOfPwn
@2c-b: Then don't overcharge. There simple as that.
@Striker5005: Not at all. I would be poor though if I paid these stupidly high prices for ancient games.
@NoBullet: I was in a Best Buy a few months ago, and saw Max Payne 2 for $10 (before tax). I'd already borrowed it from a friend and beat it front to back. I bought it anyways.
