All Things Midway Going To The Highest Bidder

Bankrupt game publisher Midway has today “established the timeline” for selling of its assets, studios and intellectual property to the highest bidder, meaning that Mortal Kombat and Joust could be yours… for the right price.

Midway already has a $33 million offer from Warner Bros. to acquire a good deal of the company’s goods, including rights to Mortal Kombat and studios in Chicago and Seattle. But that’s not everything, as Midway will be putting TNA Wrestling, its “Open World Games, Casual Games, and Full Classic IP Library” up for auction next month.

@Jerry Blanton: I don't know about Sony, but I can see Microsoft and Nintendo having interest in the properties... more MS than Nintendo though.

  • Cueil

@waywardchemist: This is an easy buy for MS... at least to get the classic game. Then they can bring the DC and N64 version of Gauntlet over to XBLA

If I were a billionaire I would totally buy the rights to Rampage and Spyhunter and get a solid development team together to make a high-quality XBLA/PSN version of each....in the same school of thought as Pac Man Championship Edition or Galaga Legions. A version that keeps the fun and core ideas of the original while updating the gameplay in a sensible way.

  • Gambit09

So basically, MK was the only thing keeping Midway afloat for a while now.

  • Antiterra

@Enkur: Loved that game. I rank it among the PS2's best and most distinctive RPGs.
Besides the great (if not altogether sane) story, it was a shining example of turn-based combat done right. The Wheel of Judgement made each fight feel tense, especially when your survival hinged upon hitting those tiny red slices.

I would love to see a PS3/360 entry in the series (more SH1 and 2, less SH3), but I won't hold my breath...

Im down with Valve, Square Enix, and maybe Jupiter.

@TaggarT6 coming soon to a theater near you!: The trouble with that is the drastically different fighting paces between the series. Street Fighter tends to feature much faster fighting than Mortal Kombat.

  • McMonahan

@TaggarT6 coming soon to a theater near you!: Somehow I'm envisioning Seth getting beat down with fatalities by frustrated Street Fighter 4 players :)

  • Kobun

@bwwardiii: Wow! If you sell them all you'd have fifty bucks!

  • Dreamwriter

@ChaosBahamut: But those aren't up for bid, that's the point. Midway is selling a certain number of things to Warner Bros. for $33 million, and auctioning off the rest.

  • Kobun

@Curse_Lily: Midway just acted as a distributor for the arcade game. It'd be the same as me making an offer for Moon Patrol, another game Midway distributed though it was developed by Irem.

  • jlarimore

I'd totally buy the Joust license.

    jlarimore

  • Kobun

@waywardchemist: As is Robotron 2084. Too bad they're such barebones ports of 20-year-old plus arcade fare most people won't be interested in. There's no reason Midway could not have made an effort to make a new Gauntlet for XBLA/PSN among other sorely needed updates.

  • Cheroro

Now for some reason, I have a picture of pulling off a fatality on some one, but instead of saying FATALITY! It says Th-th-th-th-thats all folks"........ but in a really masculine voice of course.

  • Curse_Lily

@excel_excel: I remember a huge logo on the side of arcade cabinet the said "Midway" so or either I'm nuts(probably i am)or there was a huge misprint on the cabinet.

@Cunder: Can a corporate entity wear a G-string? If so, I'll gladly tuck in some $100 bills for Gauntlet, Spy Hunter, and Robotron. Hell, I'd pay extra to get a Midway lap dance for Hydro Thunder.

  • ademu

Well, let's say that MK sells 2,000,000 x-platform. That ends up being 120,000,000 bones... minus the cost of development and production, and you have a very nice investment for the low, low price of $33 mill.

    Hypothetically speaking, of course.

    ademu

  • Miksho

    Big Money! Big Prizes!

    I LOVE IT!

  • shouryuuken

@Jerry Blanton: youre right, beat me to it. i was going to say "uh.. if the people who already have the rights havent considered making ki 3.. then we wont see one"

  • danterandal19

I'll buy the rights to "Toobin'"; i'll remake it, put in a poor representation of Miley Cyrus as the main character, and voila! Profit!

  • shouryuuken

i think warner bros should buy the whole company and make it their games division. they could then lay off idiots.. and hire (hopefully) good people to take control.

i think its smart for companies like disney, fox, warner bros, and the like to get serious about gaming.. considering they have other sources of income that do just fine.. theyll be able to take the hit that development costs bring.

  • danterandal19

    @jjammerzs:

I'll give ya everything I got...some quarters lying around here somewhere..

  • riceKRISPYninja

Doesn't already say that WB put in a bid for MK studio's as well as Mortal Kombat??

So, why does everyone think Mortal Kombat is up for sale??

Allow me to say goodbye my cherish memory

It won't happen, because I'm talking nonsense. I mean whoever heard of a company doing it for the fans/buyer?

  • jjammerzs

  • Cunder

I'll raise another dollar, and 2 packs of bubble gum.

  • Lockgar

I actually knew someone that started working at midway last winter. "He moved out there, otherwise he would still be here." He apparently saw what was happening and was able to get a job some where else. Ah Midway, what happened?

I wounder if the people who get the rights to Killer Instinct might consider making part 3.

I'm surprised one of the hardware makers like Microsoft or Sony doesn't consider buying these IPs.

@jjammerzs: That's about as much as it's worth to me, but I'll throw in a couple more dollars to help out. :)

Nah, kidding, but it will be interesting to see who gets this. I'm curious to see how much financial clout the MK franchise still carries and who would be willing to pay the most for it.
