Already, Another Lips On The Way

It’s barely been six months since the release of Lips, Microsoft’s shameless swipe at SingStar’s karaoke crown. And now, with E3 just around the corner, it seems it’s already time for another Lips game.

The Royalty Network – a site cataloguing the latest licensing and royalty deals in the world of music – has made mention of a video game tentatively titled “Lips Uno”. Now, the Royalty Network is no GameStop. There’s no platform information, no publisher info, no word on a developer (the original was done by iNiS), nothing. Just the title “Lips Uno”, and the fact it’s licensing Timbaland’s “The Way I Are”.

Still, the fact it’s got the word “Lips” in the title suggests it’s got something to do with Microsoft’s series, though whether it would be an expansion or a full-blown sequel remains unclear. Maybe it works with the existing Uno, and replaces the original’s stylish videos with depictions of your avatar crooning its little heart out.

We’ve contacted Microsoft for comment.

    @Ramza69:

Singstar took Europe by storm and (pretty much) became the best selling music game over there- I dunno if it beat Rock Band/Guitar Hero (I wouldn't be surprised if it did), but it certainly bested the Karaoke Revolution series.

  • danterandal19

    @Heliophage:
From what I played, it had horrible voice/pitch detection. "Karaoke Revolution" from like 6 years ago was more advanced. You can pretty much mumble any words, even on the hardest difficulty level, to pass a song.

It's a flawed game for sure, but it's tons of fun with a bunch of like-minded friends, so I'd be down to see a refined sequel.

Plus, although it's not announced, Luke brought up a neat notion- I wouldn't mind seeing my lame-ass avatar drunkenly sing/breakdance to "Bust a Move".

I never bought Lips (i hate the name, but thought the game looked fun). With my disability, it is hard for me to play the games with instruments, but I thought I could do a singing game. Just never got around to buying it cause I would likely only play by myself... I don't think I sing well enough to punish others. lol. So for that reason, I've avoided buying it. But I know people who have it and like it alot.

I also don't see a problem with Microsoft offering their own version of a game type that is popular on another system. They all do that. They have all been experementing with motion controls since the Wii has been such a hit. And ever since Halo 1, Sony has admitidly tried to make the Killzone franchise a quote unquote "Halo killer". Sony has Gran Turismo. So MS made Forza. MS had Crackdown, Sony makes Infamous. Nintendo has Mario Party. MS makes Fusion Frenzy. It goes on and on. They all want to imulate the success of their competition as well as innovate when possible.

    -Microsoft's shameless swipe-

agree, but isn't this the whole ideology of m$??

  • Raziel66

They need to add lyrics for Zune tracks!

    Raziel66

  • RuthLoose

@1up: She looks like the typical Lips user.... from 20 years ago. Hello, Linda Hamilton circa Terminator 1.

  • lolomfgisuck

If it came with a vocal effect to make me sound like a drunk japanese guy, I'd buy it.

    lolomfgisuck

  • TearsandScreams

@Monkey Majiks: I dunno, adding tracks from my ipod was awesome, the mics were great and the presentation and minigames were really quite charming They're clearly not competing with Singstar either, considering it's on a different console, just providing those who have a different console with an alternative. I do love Singstar, but rather than go out and buy the Queen game (for example) I can just sync my Queen songs from my ipod. Sure lyrics don't show up, but then who doesn't know the words during karaoke?

  • Mcmax3000

@lionkitten: I agree about the tracks carrying forward. If not the Disc tracks then at least the DLC.

I liked Lips for a party game as well but solo, there was NOTHING to do.

  • KaneRobot

@Michael Forsberg: I already get annoying idiots singing on Uno, I don't need to buy another game for that. Furthermore "Pretending to Smoke Weed on Camera Uno" and "Shirtless White Trash Uno" are also already taken care of.

    KaneRobot

  • Crypysmoker

I think it should just be a box with a voucher for Singing lessons and a ticket to an american idol Audtition.
The Lessons becuase most people who play this game think they are amazing..
and the american idol thing so once they do think they are amazing they can have all their pointless dreams dashed to bits in full public view

    Crypysmoker

  • Ramza69

    Singstar is the karaoke king?
Whatever happened to Karaoke Revolution? I thought that was way better than Singstar.

    Ramza69

  • lionkitten

@Heliophage: I liked Lips a lot as a party game, but it had some flaws around the edges - ways to manage massive amounts of music, smoother iPod integration, etc. I'd be all in for another version, though if the tracks don't carry forward ala Rock Band there will be hell to pay.

  • Monkey Majiks

@MikeRox: and Singstar Abba i believe too!

  • Monkey Majiks

The first Lips was so laughable and the adverts were cringe worthy, it was a disaster.

Sony have nothing to worry about with Singstar, although the good thing to come out of this, has been a kick up the back-side of Sony to be more competitive in this area, rather than resting on their laurels as they have been.

  • zoesch

I still can't fathom how someone thought that displaying a reduced amount of words on screen was the way to go for a karaoke game.

  • metallicorphan

so added with the old lips, all the Guitar hero's,rock bands,Dj heroes....the marketplace is gonna be an eyesore to visit when you favourite piece of DLC comes out for Fallout or Halo etc

because they have to have every song available on show on there that pushes everything else out of sight..and notice these games have all this DLC just when a anticipated piece of DLC is due like Broken steel etc..crafty wankers

  • Heliophage

    @Luke Plunkett:

I would hope it's a sequel then. Adding more content for a game that has more to address than how much of it people can play hurts more than it helps.

Karaoke seems like pretty simple fun, so I can't imagine it would need many more iterations to get it right.

  • chickenplucka

Maybe it's a new skin pack for Uno, like the PGR and Kameo ones...

  • Murph1908

    @Luke Plunkett:
And the name is simply atrocious.

    Murph1908

  • Bursar

Most likely pronounced Lips You Know. But between SingStar and RockBand, I don't think I need any more singing game.

    Bursar

  • MikeRox

If it's trying to keep up with Singstar it's a very overdue additional disc :p since Lip's UK release, Singstar has had Singstar Volume 3, Singstar Pop and Singstar Queen.

    MikeRox

  • Luke Plunkett

@Heliophage: Game had some technical flaws.

    A sequel could address them.

  • 1up

@Heliophage: I haven't played it but I read a couple of things that automatically put it below its competition... Maybe it's going to be even more like Singstar..

  • 1up

@Mr. Tambourine Man: Wow. Now you mention it...Eww.

  • Michael Forsberg

Lips Uno? Singing and playing cards!

    Michael Forsberg

  • Kevin Alexander Anglin

This probably would be huge in Japan if the Japanese didn't hate Microsoft. I think the only people that bought the first one were in the UK.@pinshot:

    Kevin Alexander Anglin

  • pinshot

i thought this would be the biggest japanese game of all time!turns out its for little kids and drunk parents.

  • Heliophage

How much was wrong with the first Lips? That should decide whether this is an expansion or a fullblown sequel. If there's a lot to fix, do it, otherwise just release more content.

  • Mr. Tambourine Man

    @1up:

    CODE BLUE
    It's a trap
    IT'S A TRAP!

  • 1up

That girl second on the left looks...Odd.

  • Phydeaux

@xiaNaix: oh, whoa, what? They're not compatible yet? That was a big reason I was going to get them.

Guess I'll wait until it drops further in price, too.

  • xiaNaix

The only reason I bought this was because they promised that the wireless mics would be compatible with Rock Band. We're still waiting for the patch. Sorry, Microsoft, but you're not duping me again. You know where you can put those Lips.

  • xiaNaix

@Phydeaux: When the Metallica game was announced they said the patch for Lips mic compatibility in Rock Band would be coming in "summer." Hopefully we don't have too long to wait.

  • animoid

    1 word:
    NooooooooooOO!

    animoid

  • Gam3r

Singstar>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lips. MS needs to create something new instead of trying to make something that's already been done better.

    Gam3r
