Another Rushmore — Console Only

About a month back everyone argued the concept of a theoretical gaming Mt. Rushmore. A man who ran a store in Battle Creek, Mich., soon wrote me to say he’d commissioned just such a work.

NewAge Arcade (a gaming store, but no longer operational) had this mural, depicting four characters singularly identifiable with each of the modern consoles: Mario for Nintendo, Sonic for Sega, Crash Bandicoot for PlayStation, and Master Chief for Xbox.

Dan Maurer, the store’s former owner (hard times forced its closure in 2007) had the mural painted in late 2005. “I was asked many times, ‘Why isn’t Pac-Man on there?’” he said. “My reply was always, “These are the icons of console gaming, which is what my store was about. In that sense that would make Pac-Man the king of England, and he’d have no place on Mount GameMore.”

Please forgive me, this slipped my mind and Dan was gracious enough to find hi-res pictures of the mural at his old arcade when I told him I’d love to post it. I feel I owe it to him. So here it is – gaming’s Mount GameMore as envisioned on a mural at the former NewAge Arcade in Battle Creek.

  • ryangreen02

@Alex Thompson: I did read the article, smartass. And I disagree with his answer. Fact is, arcades need consoles as much as consoles need arcades.

Without what was established by Atari and other early console makers, we wouldn't have Xbox today. Flagrant disregard of the late-70s to mid-80s in terms of console gaming is a gross injustice to the progress that they made. Furthermore, despite being a game shop, they still need to recognize the arcade, which used to be very important (at least in the US).

So I didn't and still do not accept his response to arcade gaming, and I will ignore Crash and Master Chief because they are still relatively new and generally unimportant in the larger scheme of things. Chief helped MS, and Crash helped Sony (possibly), but there is more to gaming than just two small fragments of history. Crash was one of PS1s greatest gifts, and Halo saved MS for dying on the console market, but they never really left their particular genre to make something better for the rest of gaming.

Their impact is a flash in the pan compared to Mario, and especially the history of gaming.

  • Combichristoffersen

    @Ravel:
Make it 4 out of 4. Mario's been meh after SMB3, Sonic has been on life support post-Sonic Adventure, Crash fell in a coma after CTR and Captain King has been busy being rehashed to the brink of death the last few years.

Crash - Honestly, I was checked out during Crash's reign. I was in late high-school and early college, so I had other priorities, socially.

Sony never owned the Crash Bandicoot rights AFAIK. IIRC it was a sort of.. strange deal between Universal Interactive and Naughty Dog, where UI owned the characters, franchise etc., and ND just made the games. Sony did publish the first game though (not sure about CB2, 3 etc.).

Mario I can agree with. Sonic, despite seeing better days, deserves to be there too. Crash and 'chief? I'm not convinced they should be there at all. Crash isn't functioning member of the community anymore, and the Chief hasn't proven himself. Maybe just throw a Halo up there instead, since it clearly has more personality. Or .

Still, there are plenty of other gaming icons that should be up there over those two. Mario and Sonic are truly iconic, since they were the top two mascots for a long time. I don't see why some other classic arcade icons or truly old school icons shouldn't be up there instead. Lets think founding fathers of gaming, not lazy list of things that only the new kids know of (i.e. anything pre-1996 is a good start).

As much as I love Crash Bandicoot 2, I would probably replace Crash with someone like Rayman or Solid Snake.

  • iDeNoh

@RRRansom: Also, thats just a reflection from the flash used to take the picture. :P

    iDeNoh

  • kopakauk

    @Ravel: maybe all of them~!

  • noesmano

that's actually not a very good painting...
Still, thought that counts, i guess.

  • Fallible.

    Eh.

Shall we just gloss over the fact that Rushmore Mario has a nice set of boobs, then?

  • Rinaldus

@KEN: Should've used Kratos, or even Snake would've of been more appropriate.

    Rinaldus

  • Kobun

@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Crash was not Sony's first mascot. The company's first video game mascot was Polygon Man, then Sofia from Toshinden sort of took over the role.

  • chang187

I'm not gonna judge. While I could've done a much better job, I didn't and neither did any of you so shut the fuck up. Maybe his next piece will be 10 times better.

  • Owen Good

@undefined: I realize that posting anything about any console at any time, for any reason, summons the trolls like flies to shit, but can you at least try not to be typical for five minutes out of the day? Kthx.

  • JGab

That's the problem I think Sony has the most that it's trying to fix this generation. They really didn't have a mascot for awhile, they just kind of drifted around from character to character.

I think now they've decided to make Sackboy their Mario/Sonic (platformer game, talk of a kart game, probably will evolve into a 3D action adventure at some point in the future).

Still, I think this is good for console gaming. For gaming overall though- not so sure...

  • ShaSt One

@King_Krunk: I'd pick Cloud. I'm not a FFVII fanboy, but he really is the only mascot of Sony's that doesn't come off as... dated...

  • ShaSt One

@Scott J: o plz, you have a case with Crash, but Sonic and Master Chief are gaming icons. Especially Sonic.

  • SegevRaz

@ShaSt One: Wow, his nose does look a lot like a penis.

  • gipmah

    Sony now = Sackboy.

  • Aaronosuke

@NaruThai: Yea, i would have gone with Snake or Kratos to for Playstation but im not sure if God of War came out in 2007...you'll have to excuse me, im awful with remembering the year when things come out.

@Ravel: Crash, Sonic, and Master Chief? Because Mario just had two of the best games of 08.

    Master Chief, Sonic, Crash?

  • King_Krunk

Its neat... Dont mean to be a dick but it doesnt really look all that great though.

  • Flawless101

Oh, I'm just waiting before someone nerd rages over Master Chief being there :p

  • BubbleF**kingBuddy

I love how Sony's mascot is always different. They just can't agree on what represents them.

First there was Crash, then Dax, and Cloud+Snake (before people noticed that was stupid), and now it's either Sackboy or (rarely) Drake.

In Japan, however, it's just my good bro Toro.

    BubbleF**kingBuddy

  • Black-Dog-Howls

Too bad Crash is multiplatform and the majority of gamers under 20 don't even know about Crash 1 through CTR - the only good games of the series. Same with Spyro from its Insomniac days.

    Now it's just furry bait.

    Black-Dog-Howls

  • KEN

@KEN: BTW, they sold it to Activision and they ruined the frachise with crappy games.

    Crash Bandicoot? Seriously?

No Solid Snake or Even Lara Croft?

    B. Um, King of England? Pac-Man has been a sales force on practically EVERY SINGLE MAJOR CONSOLE SINCE THE ATARI 2600. He's more like the effing Jesus Christ of video gaming than the George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.

  • Onegai

@Onegai: - of the cicle, or the outer edge.

  • thereij

Pac-Man, Mario, Sonic and Mega Man.

Pac-Man was released on consoles. Yes, they were horrible ports, but he belongs up there.

Mario and Sonic need no explanation.

Mega Man- He's been on tons of consoles (and handhelds), he's instantly recognizable and he's timeless.

    thereij

  • Onegai

@Sooku: Well, if you want to go that route im sure we can all name games that simulated some planet at a very small scale. For instance play through Yoshis Island. Theres a stage I believe that has you running from "body" to "body" while being able to walk around the circumference.

  • Skunky

@Pizookie: Mario is Missing was on PC, as were a couple of the Sonic games prior to Sega wussin' out and getting out of the hardware biz. Can we count that?

  • Skunky

@Hero-Link: I think the closest thing Sony has to a franchise of their own is Gran Turismo, but it wouldn't make much sense to carve a car out of a mountain.

Although carving a Skyline out of a mountain would be a reversal from the norm. Heh...heh...get it?

  • Pizookie

@Gundragon: Except, Snake has also been seen on the original Xbox, you can't say that about the other exclusive icons.

    Pizookie

  • Nubius does it for the Prinnies

    @KEN: flowcharts anyone?

  • Gemini-Phoenix

    @SACRE BLEU !!:

Is Toro the Cat-like mascot from the PocketStation that looks like an angular Hello Kitty? I think Sony should stick with this as their mascot to be honest, as I think it's too late to be coming up with new ones

They also used Lara Croft as their mascot for a while, which was always stupid seeing as how the original Tomb Raider was also a Saturn game.

As for Sonic... Since SEGA are now a software publisher and developer only now, and Sonic games are multi-platform, should Sonic really be up there? After all, why not have characters from Square games, or Atari, or Amiga instead? They'd all be equally as apt. I think Mario is the only one who truly deserves to be up there, with perhaps Master Chief

  • Gemini-Phoenix

Is that supposed to represent Sonic? It looks more like that stupid Blue Badger from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney... Anybody else initially think this when they first saw it?

  • SSgtTEX

    @ryangreen02:

Yes the arcade needs consoles and consoles need arcades. But that is not the point of the freaking painting.

They may not have a huge history, but they are faces of 2 console company. Mario is the face Nintendo, Sonic is Sega, Crash for Sony, and MC for Microsoft. Which is the whole point to the guys painting.

It isn't a painting of gaming history. It is a painting depicting characters to a related console for a console gaming store. Not a painting of the most influential characters in gaming history for an arcade.

  • Zorantor

@Solome: There's an excellent game shop in Framingham, MA called Game Universe. When you walk in, it's just game murals on all sides. The first time I walked in and found myself surrounded by Mario, Katamari, Pac-man et al, I just kind of thought, "alright, this is where I shop now."

    Zorantor

  • pashaveliki

That mural sucks... and sucks badly. I really hope by 'comissioned' he meant 'found spray painted on wall one night"

  • Zorantor

@gipmah: I was excited for LBP, but I think I'm the only person in the world who ended up not liking it. As fond as I am of my three PlayStations, I've almost never been interested in the first party stuff.

That said, I would agree that Sackboy does seem to be the new face of PlayStation, at least outside of Japan. In Japan it seems like it's more Toro than Sackboy.

    Zorantor

  • Zorantor

@GameBuddy: I got it right away.

I always thought it was interesting that because of that cameo, Wario (who was then a very minor character) was one of the first Mario characters to appear on the N64, even before Luigi.

    Zorantor

  • Zorantor

@Ueziel: Nobody said Mario Galaxy and SA2's Mad Space were the same. Sooku said that they were similar. Which they are, save for a few details. Even though they're not the exact same thing, you can't argue that they don't share many traits that are relatively unique to platformers.

    Zorantor

  • Zorantor

@J4cK 0f He4rt5: You sure? Because I played the hell out of Wario Land for Wii, which is decidedly Mario-esque, and I count that among my favorite Wii games.

    Zorantor

  • Zorantor

@NaruThai: Snake and Lara were never exclusive to Sony. I'd especially rule out Snake as the face of Sony considering that he's in Smash, something decidedly Nintendo. Granted, the same is true for Sonic, but there's a history there.

While it's true that Crash was Sony's mascot for a short while, he was never as popular as Mario or Sonic and never reached that same level of icon. I'd say if there's a character who represents exclusively Sony, it's Sackboy, boring though he may be.

    Zorantor

  • Mezodon

@Combichristoffersen: I've never heard anyone call Super Mario World, 64, and Galaxy "meh." You're welcome to your opinion, but I'd like to know which games you actually like if you're not impressed by those.

Megaman, should be there instead of Halo dude, and instead of Crash Bandicoot there should be Lara Croft's face. Sony even did a couple BIG budget movies about it.

  • Banana

    Mario came.

  • Svend Joscelyne

@Gundragon: You still can't really call a PlayStation mascot on a character who's first appearance was on the MSX/NES.

    Same with Final Fantasy.

    Svend Joscelyne

  • J4cK 0f He4rt5

@Zorantor: But there haven't been any main Wario games in the vein of Galaxy, Sunshine or 64.
Paper Mario doesn't count because it technically has a gimmick, but if the SMGalaxy sequel was a sidescroller, that would be a step back. Keep Mario in the 3D envirnoments on consoles, but sidescrollers on DS. On that note, where the hell is New Super Mario Bros. 2?

  • Dinopoulos

All sentiment of the beloved and historical characters, and the fact that he had to close his store aside...That mural is an utter piece of shit. "Commissioned"? Dear sweet baby fucking Jesus sucking on a ring pop, Dan, you didn't actually pay for that did you?

@Bii Nii Wii Nii Politely Replaces You're Your with Your You...:

Why not just axe the Xbox altogether and have that weird duck-dragon or Pitfall Harry repping for the Atari 2600?

Ageism, that's why. Everyone likes the fit (RRODs aside) young console with its curves and bump-mapping. I remember the days when all it took was one stick and one button to give me all the pleasure I needed.

    dd528

  • dd528

@Alex Thompson: I think people might object to Master Chief because he is pretty characterless compared to the other three.

I think this is pretty common with FPS protagonists. They are, with a few exceptions (Duke Nukem? Samus Aran? And they both started off in platform games) usually silent and sometimes even faceless.

This is a contrast with Mario or Sonic or Crash Bandicoot, who are hardly paradigms of good character development, but at least have mannerisms, catch phrases, memorable design, and so on.

Anyway, I think that Sony and MS have kind of moved beyond the stage where they need mascots. They're slightly more mature brands than Nintendo, so it's not really surprising that Master Chief is a crap mascot, and Crash wasn't even all that great ten or twelve years ago.

Me, I don't even care. I don't even really know why I'm posting in this story. I'm just waiting for my flatmate to get dressed so we can go to the pub.

    dd528

  • dd528

  • EternalYoshi

@Combichristoffersen: What? Super Mario World and SM64 were great games. Super Mario Sunshine not so much. Sunshine put the franchise in a bad position.

I agree with you about the Console Sonic games after Sonic Adventure. Sonic 2006 was so bad....

Crash Bandicoot kinda dissappeared after CTR on the Playstation because Naughty Dog lost the rights to the franchise afterwards.

Isn't the Halo series finished or am I mistaken?

  • Skunky

@Pizookie: Now that's exactly where it gets into serious gray area, because the Xbox IS a pc with most of the functionality removed.

  • Who the eff is GlassAdam?

Crash? I think a better character to symbolize the Sony era would have been FF7's Cloud.

  • firefly

The art itself isn't particularly good, but I honestly don't see how one can argue with the choices. Each character is/was the definitive mascot for its respective console manufacturer at the time (2005).

Mario and Sonic are no-brainers. I know Sony's never really had one, but Crash was arguably the closest they got. Who can forget those ads where he crashed the Nintendo party?

If not Crash, then who else for Sony back in 2005? Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter gave it a go, but never really got it, Kratos was just coming into his own at the time, and of course Sackboy was years away from making his debut.

And Master Chief for Microsoft is pretty much a given, as well. Can't see anyone else giving him a run for his money on the MS mascot stakes. Next closest would be Marcus Fenix, but I've never seen anyone suggest him as an MS "mascot" before, and he's hardly as iconic in look as Master Chief.
