Atari Jaguar Getting New Game This Year
The Atari Jaguar was a flop. Though, despite being discontinued in 1996, the console continues to get lovely made games from indie devs. Never say die!
The latest game is Mad Bodies, a Breakout-style shooter. The game’s developer Force Design worked on this title for six years — something even more remarkable when you consider that the Jaguar had already been discontinued for eight years.
The humorous title boasts 10 stages, digital speech samples and multiple power-ups and weapons. Priced at US$80, the game features “oversized plastic clamshell case with full colour cover and cartridge label, and a semi-gloss, black and white instruction manual.”
Pricey, sure, but we’re assuming that this is the best new Jaguar game that will be released this year — next year, too. We don’t know about the year after that, though. That year is wide open.

@BryanH: Yeah, two 32-bit procs. It's literally like the the "two Gamecubes taped together" joke for the Wii.
Microsoft totally stole the Jaguar controller to make their first fine masterpiece.
@BryanH: And if it gets exactly 100, I get a free hubcap.
@ca$h: I would take that bet. I'd go as high as 250.
But I'm not, I'll stick with 100.
@Netnavi: It had two 32-bit processors. Or doohickies. Whatever. There was a pair of 32-bit dealies in it.
@ca$h:
I'm willing to bet US$8,081 that it will sell more than 100 copies. Any takers?
AXATAX
Will it sell >100 copies or <100 copies within a year? I saw we get a pool going RIGHT NOW!

If it was say....20 bucks, I'd be all abou it. But for 80? Sorry, I don't Love my Jaguar that much. 80 dollars could buy me things that feed way better cats than you. Sorry Jag.
Smuffy
Why?
$80?!
Yeah, um...never in a million years, would I pay $80 for a Jaguar game.
I spent $200 on Steel Battalion. I've played it maybe six times and I'm convinced it's a better value than this.
Mr Ashcraft how many times have I sent you an email about Pier Solar for the Sega Genesis and been ignored *roll eyes* and now your giving out Jaguar lovin! It's just so unfair *sobs*

No love for the Lynx?
Press release: Atari announces it's twenty-year life cycle for Atari Jaguar Home Entertainment System"
It could be the best Jaguar game EVER! Not that it would be hard to make the best Jaguar game ever because 99.5% of the Jaguar games sucked so much ass that donkeys now demand a new 3 lettered word for reference.
RONlN
Sure is looking Game boy advance there Jaguar.
Why was it ever considered 64 bits? It may have been that technically but it isn't like they ever used it. And what the heck was with that controller? Though I always wanted to play that Aliens game for it. Only good game it had.
Jaguars GOTY, I'm calling it now. I will put my money on it!

Why? I get the appeal of making something for a classic system, but why the Jaguar?
I remember a time say around 98 or so where Gamepro got hammered by people asking why they weren't reviewing the new releases for Jaguar (which were all indie games btw. As surprising as that was the big shocker was that Gamepro eventually caved to the pressure and reviewed two indie Jaguar games.
Jaguar fanboys were rabid back in the day.
Flyhawk
Damn, and I just sold my Jaguar
When I was a kid I tried fooling myself that this was a good game system... but I always knew.. always knew.

@GoKeithGo: Some people loved the Jaguar. I don't personally know why, but they love it. Maybe they love it solely based on Aliens vs Predator, sicne as far as I know most of the other games sucked.
Jimbotron
I knew this day would come, thats why I've kept mine around all these years. I never lost hope for the Jaguar! Next WORLD DOMINATION.
Valkrin
Say what you want about the Jag (I do). Alien vs. Predator was AWESOME. You could just glue that into the cart slot and be set!
..........kinda like Goldeneye 007 on the N64.
@Antiterra: and its 20 second battery life?
@Jimbotron: there were a bunch of duds. but there were some fantastic games in the mix. Jag had the premier version of NBA Jam: TE. buttery smooth 60 fps with super clear audio. Tempest 2000 is considered the defining title. It had the best version of single-player Doom, even better than the PC (Carmack tweaked the controls to make it better than PC). Unfortunately, network code was buggy. a lot of the great Jag games arrived as the Jag was dying and didn't get any press or shelf space. plus, the days of paying for expensive cartridges instead of cheap CD's was coming to an end.

Alien vs Predator was a dam good game. Hard to, I could only beat it by using the "banana" code. Doom and Wolfenstein 3d were also good games. But I dont think im going to be getting this game.
Remember AVGN's romp with it? The system mostly seemed to be an unworkable mess.
Let's hope this game gets ported to PC or XBLA/PSN.

@Flyhawk:
You know, I sort of remember a magazine from the era with letters from Atari Jaguar fans, even those feeling optimistic about the machine's future. Yeah, it was about 97 or 98.
Was it only Gamepro? What other multi-platform mag was there at the time?
@Netnavi: It technically had two 64-bit processors (object processor and blitter), so yes, it was 64-bit.
@xerdo: EGM, Tips and Tricks, etc.
@FAQ
That said, most of the work was done by the 32-bit procs. You can also see why the thing is such a beast to program.

Remember that Jaguar games come on cartridges, and a big chunk of that $80 will be going to getting them manufactured in small numbers. Wouldn't surprise me if the cost of manufacturing each game was at least $40.
And I loved my Jaguar. Many happy hours with AvP (best version ever - and still in my top 3 FPS games), Tempest 2000, Brutal Sports Football, Rayman (easily the prettiest platform game at the time), Wolf 3D... Okay, I'm struggling from there, but it was worth buying for AvP and Tempest 2000 alone. And I still don't regret paying the £60 retail price for AvP.

It must have been my birthday in '96, or maybe Christmas, but my wife got me a Jaguar setup @ Radio Shack. It was like $200 for the Jag, two controllers and two games. That was a big mistake, but the PS was still $300 at the time and wifey said no.
But it had really nice games: Iron Soldier was awesome- you played this walking Mech.. So so sweet... I had Doom and that was incredible. I had NBA Jam, that was sweet also. The only games that did not float my boat were: Troy Aikman Football and Cybermorph...
Avp was ok, dungeon master was a wee bit better! :)

Paid for my copy of MadBodies yesterday. What with Skunkboard rev.2's recent release and other games imminently arriving, 2009 is gonna be the year of the Jag!
Jaguar Rules!

@Atheist Jew: just listen to yourself, man!
An Iron Soldier. Forgot that one.
almo
I had a lot of fun with Tempest 2000, AvsP and Doom.
almo
@almo: Did you get to play others such as Battlemorph, Iron Soldier 2, Raiden, Super Burnout, Protector SE, Wolfenstein 3D, Atari Karts and Hover Strike?
There's also been several high quality releases since Jaguar's demise too. (-:
