Bethesda Announcing Wii Game This Year
Bethesda Softworks, the folks behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, is going to make a Wii game announcement this year — and a “really big Wii game” at that.
In an interview with industry site GamesIndustry, Bethesda Europe’s Sean Brennan questioned whether there’s a market for 18-year-old-and-up Wii titles. “Is there space in the Wii market for that? I think there is, but again, it’s all about finding out how big that is,” said Brennan. “Is it 5 percent? If it’s five per cent of the market and you can own that space it’s worth doing because you can achieve volume.” For Bethesda, if you can’t own that 5 percent, it’s not worth doing.
That being stated, Bethesda is announcing a Wii game sometime this year. Like we previously mentioned, a really big Wii game. According to Brennan, “We are going to make an announcement on a really big Wii game this year, we’ve got a couple of other things in the pipeline, and it’s a format we’re really looking at with the right approach.”
“We’re not going to establish a new range and call if ‘My Girly Game Range’ or whatever these other companies are doing, it’s so me-too and boring,” Brennan added. A “My Girly Game Range” from Bethesda too boring? No, Sean, we think you mean, too awesome.

1) This'll be a great "throwback to Fallout's early games" Isometric, point and click RPG. And will sell as poorly as other non-casual games on the system.
2) This'll be a mini-game collection,rail shooter or some other shallow, "everyone can play game" that'll sell loads cause it's a "Wii game".
Either way, no good can come of this. The former's preferable though.

Wii's getting more and more developers. Nice!
Killer7
@Vecha: or a broken steel ref....
Dralex789
@Snacky_Smores: I believe they fixed the DLC as soon as possible, which could then be downloaded again, fixed.
No?
@subnet6: I think they act as publisher for that; the Sea Dogs developers made that one. Or was that a different game?
syafiqjabar
@Curse_Lily: I want a real FPS for the Wii :'(
@Mr. Tambourine Man:
Ahah!
Because all bethesda games are broken and unplayable right?
/sarcasm
@Phlycheez: theres also the edler scrolls themed fighting game they could do.
maybe fallout chop till you drop.
maybe theyll port elder scrolls: shadowkey.
but if theyre following the current trend itll be a rail shooter.
abort_user
@Thorax Ramrod:
What about a "Guided" arcade shooter experience with fallout themed "waggle" minigames scattered throughout?
@Kytano-Skorpius: You mean the recognition for producing bug ridden games and then alienating part of the fanbase by giving one console broken DLC? Then yes, they deserve recognition for their contribution.
@Soniking: Impact is not why games get future investment. Profit is. If the game turns a profit, it will potentially get a sequel.
The other thing to note is that the Wii does not simply consist of 2 demographics. Most people assume you're either hardcore or casual. This couldn't be further from the truth. The wrong assumption is that the hardcore ran out and bought madworld immediately (therefore there must be very few hardcore owners on the system) and that the casual will NEVER by madworld. The truth is that there is a huge middle ground of gamers who enjoy both casual and core titles. These gamers may potentially buy a game like madworld but they're not the gamers who care about launch dates and grabbing the game in the first month. Thats why games like madworld sell poorly (compared to other big name core titles) in the first month. That's also why games on Wii have MUCH MUCH longer life spans than games on the HD consoles. The core gamers are very intense up front, but lose interest in previous games literally within weeks. I guarantee you that long after we've stopped having flame wars over madworld, it will still be churning out respectable sales, slowly but surely working it's way too 500K or somewhere in there. In the end, some blogger will finally notice this and we'll be reading about it on Kotaku long after it's too late to care. But as long as the developers make their money, that's all that matters.
@djpookie2000: How many of those hits were created by Third Party Developers? Don't get bent either when bethtesda releases the game broken (you know its going to happen).
@Soniking: Oh boo-freeakin'-hoo... the casual market doesn't play your "hardcore" games. Somebody better call the whambulance because your personal opinions aren't dictating what everybody else thinks. Seriously, all you have to do these days is put in a ton of gore and a game is automatically hardcore. I'll admit that the Wii is an excellent platform for games that don't appeal to the "hardcore" crowd, but these companies have the right to make the games they want, and people have the right to buy and be interested in what they want. If you want "hardcore" crap out the wazoo, get a 360, PS3, or even a DS, and if you have, then play it more. It's not Nintendo's goal to make YOU happy, it's Nintendo's goal to make money, and it's their right.

@Cronoking: wow went all the way back to home alone... reaching...
@OprahBabb: wasn't as long as you would have liked? it took me near 40 hours to get to the radio station.
@Komrade Kayce: By Guide dogs?
@-MasterDex-: This is the only thing the comes to mind when i read this announcement.

@Uzumaki_Kiba:
Yeah, instead we will get highly polished and very graphically intensive shovelware ;P
EternalStar
This is a bad idea, most Wii games don't support patching of the game itself so this means either making a quality game that is mostly bug free and without any major problems (Not bethesda's strong suit), stroking nintendo's fears about rapists coming into their home via the internet away (difficult) or just releasing a shoddy project that will invariably be eaten up by the masses despite glaring flaws and bugs (most likely)
EternalStar
@Soniking: If a game cost x amount of dollars to make for any console and needs to sell only 50,000 copies to make a profit and sells 60,000, its a success. It does not matter if there are only 60,000 consoles out there or 500 million, if the dev made money then he/she made money and thats all that matters in the end.
Also remember that the Wii is not as expensive to program for, so each of its games does not have to break the 1 million mark to still turn a huge profit, this is true for hardcore and casual games.
@subnet6: Your right a large oversight on my part, it cost about 5mil to develop for the Wii which is far below a PS3 development cost of about 15-20 mil.
Though the impact the games make on Wii owners is extremely low, cutting the chances of a sequel, or future investment in the title.
Soniking

@Combine: Good point but I don't think the casual market will invest anymore interest in this great title, truly a shame.
Of course your argument does hold water, Okami sales has evidently picked up even as a late port.(previous poster's point)
Soniking
@CosmicElement:
I think we can be pretty sure it won't be a Wii-adaption of either of their current 2 big series, so that only leaves one option:
MGS4 on 360!
@Soniking: okay, i see where you were coming from with the clarification. Sorry I admit I jumped the gun. Although I would say that a lot of madworlds initial numbers was that a lot of the wii owning public who knew about it, heard it was relatively short and probably opted to rent/skip it until its cheaper. While a lot of others who own the system will probably buy it over time as they play it at a friends/word of mouth etc.
See its total sales in a years time before we judge it out right I say.
@FrellingDominar: I believe it was Epic... but I could be mistaken.
nastysquar3d
@syafiqjabar: Didn't they make that really crappy Pirates of the Caribbean game on original xbox?
@zgreenwell: This is correct. You actually need significantly higher sales on the PS3 or 360 for your game to be a success. Yes, 1M is an iconic number, but on the Wii, you don't even need half that to be a success. On the PS3/360, I'd say 1M is a bare minimum to be a success. Most developers are saying you need something like 500K to break even on the 360/PS3 and about 1/3 of that to break even on the Wii. It's simple math based on development costs.
@Phlycheez: Nah, my money is on a Fallout-themed minigame collection. Should be a hoot!
@Soniking: You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Development on the 360 or the PS3 generally costs a lot more than it does on the Wii. Selling 1 million on the PS3 or 360 does not guarantee making a profit, whereas selling 1 million on the Wii does in pretty much all cases. Hell, de Blob sold around 700k worldwide and was a big success, where as some games on the PS3 / 360 need to sell 2-3 million just to break even.
Also, when you consider that EA is ramping up development on the Wii, Bethesda is joining in, Ubisoft is developing a traditional exclusive, etc etc - publishers are not shying away from the Wii.
pslong9
@KotakuFreund:
morrowii...?
no. god no.
Jaziek
@THEJOHNNYOHM: Nice. Too bad this got put in the wrong place.
@Soniking: If the development costs are not as high, 1 million Wii game sales could be better than 1 million sales between 360 and PS3.
@Kytano-Skorpius:
No.. they deserve all the "recognition" they can get from Fallout 3.
@Legendary Hoamaru: I was planning on buying Little King Story. I'm sure it will be over looked though because it is too cute for mainstream gamers, and they're the only people who have heard about it. Maybe some well placed ads would help it.
@Pyrefly: Many of us still prefer keyboard and mouse controls. Archaic? Maybe... Effective? Definitely!
@Derangel: They also develop a hockey management game too (similar to Football Manager). And publish that creepy Chtulhu game.
syafiqjabar
didn't bethesda just a few months ago call the Wii a joke? i seem to recall around fallout 3's release they were saying it was a toy that was beneath them. maybe i'm wrong, but it seemed it was they who came out against it as an affront to "real" gaming. it was them or cliffy b, or somebody big name.
@Crayon Box of Fury: I think they are, and it's called 'Skyrim'. Just rumours at this point.
syafiqjabar
@Bravepower: Black Isle deserves praise for the first 2 games, definitely. But Interplay pretty much muddled the franchise with the poorly done PS2/Xbox action-RPG and Fallout Tactics.
Weird how Bethesda-made Fallout 3 is has more relation to the Fallout franchise than the Interplay-published Tactics ans BoS. Weirder still is Fallout 3 is almost exactly how I imagined Fallout 3 would be like when I first play Fallout 2 in 1998.
syafiqjabar
"We want more hardcore games for the Wii!"
*Potential hardcore game announced for the Wii*
"NO! IT'S GONNA SUCK! DO NOT WANT!"
No wonder they cater to housewives, they don't bitch as much.
Nslick
@mjpm: Depends on the console, 1 million is just an iconic number to get behind.
On PS3 and 360it's success, unfortunately on the Wii it could mean future success, not an outright success.
I may have exaggerated a bit with 5 million but 2-3 million sounds about right.
It just sounds good to says 1 million sold right?
Soniking
It's going to be an Elders Scroll arcade rail shooter....
@Soniking:
Last I checked, any 1 M seller equaled success. When you have games that sold tens or hundreds of thousands on ALL platforms, 1 million is a major milestone.
mjpm
@Soniking:
I pity anyone that thinks that list contains quality
Paincake
RIP Bethesda softworks. 1985-2009
Paincake
@Nâ—Gage Croal: 50 million wii's sold and you think 1 million sold copies is a success?
This isn't a PS3 or 360, a Wii game needs to sell 5 million to make a big enough impact in people homes and to gain losses.
It really is a sad state of affairs for the Wii.
Soniking
@Combine: Hmm seems as do I have failed at sending the message, or some of you failed at owning a sense of humor.
These games had critical acclaim, but sold poorly and that sucks. the 66,000 mentioned were the lucky ones for owning these games.
What I was saying is if you want to find quality on the Wii, just look at the list of games that the soccer moms, and pony owners don't buy.
Mad world rocked, but what was the iconic number of copies sold in the US? 66,000 lucky individuals.
Unfortunately I don't think many other publishers will find any success even Bethesda.
How can anyone consider this trolling?
Go swallow a knife, happy now?
-sad Wii owner who sees the developers pain
Soniking
@Bravepower: Yes, because Bethesda SURELY doesn't deserve recognition for their work on their vision of the Fallout universe.
@user_21938: Why? Because he thinks that Interplay/Black Isle deserve recognition for their work on two landmark games in the history of games?
I couldn't agree with deci more.
@user_21938: Agreed, it's so boring seeing Fallout 'fans' complain because it's not Interplay, but rather Bethesda who made Fallout 3, when in fact 3 was a friggin' fantastic installment to the series that stayed faithful to the originals despite changing it to a first person game, but it needed to be brought into the 21st century. I've played all 3 and I love Fallout 3 just as much as the first 2.
Lukehmuse
@djpookie2000: I think a lot of us are traditional gamers in the sense that we aren't denying innovation or change, just that we like what we have. Many of us, myself included, just simply prefer a standard controller for our games it's just a preference, the same way as some people prefer automatic over manaul cars. This basically just means we would rather them produce a game where they aren't so limited by the capabilities of the console.
@djpookie2000: Every other game these guys have made is great.
That's your opinion. Not all of us share it.
-MasterDex-
@Soniking: Wow, when people do something for the Wii you can't fking please can you. People bitch and moan about there being no hardcore games. Then when ones announced they bitch that there is a hardcore game coming to the wii...
You should troll elsewhere.
I always get angry when game devs announce titles for the Wii because I'm like 'NO ME WANTS TO PLAY' then I realise I actually have a Wii thats not been used for about 4 months.
@Crayon Box of Fury: THISS
ELDER SCROLLS V NAO!
@NewYork214: Please let it be a Remake of Morowind with Motion Plus support :(
KotakuFreund
@Cronoking: Yeah, though the number of non-ES games they have made does out-number the ES games. That being said, the ES games were the best of the bunch.
Derangel
Neat, I'm really glad that they openly acknowledge the terrible shovelware being pumped out, and make it clear that they're steering clear of that.
@Soniking: and Little King's Story isn't in your list...which means even more people will let that fly under the radar (Happen to me once too).
@Soniking:
You are aware that the Wii version of Okami outsold the PS2 version, right? If the Wii version is a failure, then what's that to say of the PS2 version, where the install base is over twice that of the Wii's?
The first Boom Blox is just under 1M in sales... I'd hardly call that a failure...
No More Heroes... Well, Suda51's games usually underperform. But it did outsell killer7, which was on PS2 and GameCube.
Both games are getting sequels, too. You can't be a total failure if someone greenlighted a sequel.
C'mon. If you're gonna troll, try harder than that.
@OprahBabb: Wayne Gretzky Hockey, The Terminator, Home Alone, PBA Bowling series, IHRA racing series.
I'd say its quite easy for them to make a game that isnt really big~
@THEJOHNNYOHM:
Ahem ^^^^(@ Soniking)
I bought all of the games for Wii you listed!
FEED. ME. MOAR. LISTS.
THEY ARE LIKE VITAMINS TO ME!!
@Derangel: Dont forget bowling! Throw in some Terminator and Racing games and you pretty much have most of the games they made that werent in the ES series.
@Soniking: So tell me, how can someone buy a game and still have it in a collection of games that no one bought?
Besides, I bought Mad World, Okami and No More Heroes, these are all great games and I happen to like the Wii version of Okami more than the PS2 verison.

@Chanaluss:
Start up your own gaming blog, and give it your personal pick 'GOTY' award.
With any luck, your award will appear on the next iteration of box art for the game. I'm sure they wouldn't mind getting an award, ANY award, even if it is from 'joes reputable basement of gaming'.
@deci: I'm a huge fan of the older Fallout games. I'd even go so far as to say I'm obsessed with them (they actually form a large part of my life philosophy). So, when I say what I'm going to say, I want you to know that it's not because I'm ignorant of what came before, and how what's come just recently is different.
Get over yourself. Seriously, let it go.
user_21938
You people have to remember that ES isn't all Bethesda does. They're a full fledged publisher with a few different development teams. ES may be their most popular series, but it has never been their only product.
On an amusing note, they made a hokey game on the NES.

@Soniking:
3 months before it launched, i said that sonic and the black kngiht would be GOTY 2009, and im too stubborn to change my mind having played it. its not super terrible, but its no-- *looks around*
SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT GOTY 2009!
The problem is that the Wii is just inundated with shovelware so the signal to noise ratio in game quality is completely zilch. On the surface Boom Blox looks no different than one of 40+ other titles littering the rack at Best Buy so how is the consumer to know that one is good?

@Komrade Kayce: DAMN YOU!
I was going to post a sarcastic comment to that effect!
I love how negative all you guys are. Every other game these guys have made is great. The Wii really needs more "hardcore" games. I am tired of the one game that holds my attention every few months. There is still time in the Wii's life cycle for a few more hits.
Hopefully this leaves more of an impact on a Nintendo console than GTA: Chinatown Wars.

Nope, they totally did.
@Uzumaki_Kiba: Is there anyone who doesn't openly acknowledge the terrible shovelware being pumped out?
I guess it's really just any of those me-too companies that start up a Wii division just to make party games and sports compilations with graphics that in no way try to be realistic.

I can sort of imagine a Morrowind for the Wii. Slightly beefed up from the Xbox port since the Wii has more memory for textures (or does it?).

honestly that said nothing interisting except for the fact that we might get a Bethesda game on a system that needs a revival.
@Bubbleman!: Yet again, the point is proven. Gamers are retarded.
another wii hater thread....wonderful.
i like how people's idea of "quality games" is anything that isnt on the wii.
it's bullshit and i think it's about time kotaku start doing something about blatant firestarting like this. sure, ive started plenty of debates on here but everytime something gets posted about the wii, it's always the same lonely, sweaty, nerdy, never touched a woman before jackasses that are talking all the smack about how the console isn't "hardcore" enough for their loser asses.
so two can play that game..

And a special edition lunchbox to close the sale!

@KichiGuy:
Madworld= Did you play through it a first time. Or did you just skip it because you couldn't play it later? If you played through it once did you enjoy your first play-through (Because that's all that matters)
Z & Wiki = Obviously you didn't play it. Sorry that a couple of videos on the net turned you off from actually playing the game for yourself and then forming your opinion.
NMHeroes = You've obviously played and didn't like it.
Okami = You've obviously played and didn't like it.
@Bravepower:
what are you hoping to do, increase their market share? I think we're all aware who made fallout 1 and 2 by now, thanks to the bevy of haters who flock to bethesda-related newsposts. You want to enlighten the masses? mission complete! give it a rest!
Fallout Thwii?
Don't do it Bethesda! You'll only lose money that way. Just look at madworld.
@Soniking: Hmm, it would be nice if there were actually some third party games to support this 'third party games don't sell on Wii' thing, but there quite simply haven't been any blockbuster games to make it worthwhile.
MadWorld - a hardcore game, not a good hardcore game. Quite repetitive in fact.
Okami - This obviously isn't the fault of the Wii, as the PS2 version suffered the same fate. Despite how much I loved this game.
No More Heroes - It was good, but had glaring bugs (however deliberate) and the non-boss sections became repetitive (again however deliberate). The awesome boss fights were what saved this game.
Zack & Wiki, Boom Blox - I haven't bought these though I will refer to another game here - de Blob. This had a glowing reception similar to the games you mentioned, but it didn't appeal to me, and I'll admit it was because of the visuals on all 3 fronts. They look very childish. Anyhow, de Blob was selling for a cheap price and I figured I'd take the plunge, but I can honestly say I got bored with it. That makes it very difficult to take the plunge with Zack & Wiki and Boom Blox. I'd rather buy something else instead.
I hope they're prepared for abysmal sales.
RiotControl
@CosmicElement: Eh, Chinatown Wars sold this month just as well as last month, and is around 200,000 sold now. It's looking to be a slow-burner on the DS, just like the rest of them.
@No I wouldn't like tea and crumpets: Well, maybe now that devs are picking up the pace, picante style, you won't have to worry about that.
It better not be a Fallout game, I just sold my 2nd Wii on Friday because I NEVER played it. I'm hooked on Fallout 3 like it were Jet or Buffout.
@Paincake: Wow, I totally agree with you. I've looked heavily into all of those games and don't like any of them.
Madworld = gore-tastic novelty item I won't play later
Z & Wiki = saw the vids...puzzles don't seem interesting
NMHeroes = I like the characters, but the over-world is horrendous, the mandatory side-jobs are hit and miss, and the core gameplay needs a lot of work.
Okami = I have it on PS2...24 hours into it...game is too slow, too easy. Combat is not satisfying enough. Best things in the game are the graphics and music. Controls are also good, but the action is so easy it doesn't matter. Not saying it's bad, it just could have been A LOT better.
My 4 cents.
Oh god no,
Beth can't even make the big boy version of the Fallout 3 work. A wii anything is going to crash and burn horribly.

Be interesting to see what happens when a quality developer gets their hands on the Wii.
They made Morrowind for the Xbox and that was astonishing, the Wii isn't that much different. I'm expecting great things here, mainly because Bethesda are one of the very very few developers that constantly do deliver great things.
That said, I wish they'd do a DS game instead.

@Lukehmuse: this was no complain. it is just a fact that needs to be straightened out. there is no fanboyism involved when you just make clear that bethesda did not make fallout 1 and 2. and that they just bought the rights and produced fallout 3.
