British Sales Charts: Nintendo Gets Caught In The Octagon

Has Call of Duty 4 gone platinum or something? It's charting higher than World at War. I mean, I think it's a better game, but still. Might be the Modern Warfare 2 hype machine gearing up I guess.

Whereabouts are you? Round my way in Manchester, football is pretty much all that matters. People are into the rugby and boxing as well, but football is like life or death, whereas the others are just distractions. I think UFC is gaining ground on boxing though. People seem to view it as a bit more unpredictable. I'd rather watch boxing myself, 99% of the time, but I'm not everyone, clearly.

You can see how much St Paul's still dominates the skyline, which is remarkable, given that it was built pretty much straight after the Great Fire in 1666, and so is nearly 350 years old. We're lucky that so much of the architectural heritage of this country managed to survive the Blitz. One of the things that struck me most when I was in Berlin was that virtually every building you see is less than 60 years old. It felt very youthful compared to most British cities. Very different.

EA Sports Active is a really well-done program, and EA deserves credit for trying to create an excellent fitness program that combines exercise with fun. I particularly like the sports-style exercises. And, no Mii's or Nintendo-style anime or graphics.

Somewhere like New York saw a massive boom in construction at a time when skyscrapers were coming into fashion, whereas the construction of the most important buildings in London has been spread out over about the last 350 years.

Also, there are very few tall buildings in central London because of the existence of legally protected views of important historical buildings. Most crucial of all are the 10 protected views of St Paul's Cathedral and the Palace of Westminster (both relatively short buildings) which, in planning terms, are more important than any other buildings in the city. Although their protection was loosened under the mayoral administration of Ken Livingston, it has been reinstated under Boris Johnson.

So you do get tall buildings around Canary Wharf, but this is more than four miles away from St Paul's. In general, London planning policy has been that views of the city from the ground, taking into account historical considerations, are most important.

The geography of the city also means that views of the whole skyline from a distance are not as important. Unlike somewhere like LA, it is a very flat city, so there are few vantage points that overlook it. And unlike somewhere like New York, there are not the same views from out at sea or the far side of the Hudson or East Rivers.

London has always been planned (to the extent that it has been planned) to be seen from within, unlike some of those other cities you mentioned.

Even the telecast UFC matches (i.e., ones that air on TV a month or so after their Pay Per View debut) garner more viewers than the average, well . . . anything in sports. With the exception of well known events - like playoff games, bowl games, n' things of that - UFC matches are usually the most viewed program by males 18+ when they air. I wouldn't exactly call that niche. :| It may not be as well known as (American) football or soccer, but the sport is growing at a ridiculous rate.

@Ackers: I wonder if that UK bundle will spur console sales... I am not a fan of Infamous (it hasnt looked good to me) but the reviews have been telling a different tale (and ill be glad to be wrong)

I would like to get Nintendo in the Octagon, so I could beat some sense into them.

No the ufcs pretty popular in the UK and the game got good reviews across the board so not that surprising, surprised the ps3 version is 3rd tho would like to see the sales figures of the two. I bought it day one, then returned it 3 days later...the online play is laggy as hell, 9/9 games suffered from major lag despite playing gears, cod, street fighter 2 hd, fight night etc all without lag.

@Nitro378: Britain doesn't really have skyscrapers. City centres tend to be made up of older buildings, that mostly look better than massive buildings anyway. besides, that's only a bit of london's skyline.

Man, ufc bores the heck outta me, but undisputed is brilliant! It probably helps that im a huge fan of anything involving punching and kicking (videogame wise). On the otherhand, i have quite a few friends that cant stand ufc but love this game.

I cant wait to see its total sales for a week, im happy for thq - theyre a decent publisher.

Layton got hammered this week. Almost out of the Top 10.

UFC is pretty big news in the Uk now, the only downside is it's on a rip off sports channel setanta who charge over £10 a month. not sure how the rest of Europe feel but amongst my social group it's bigger than a lot of other sports.

I'm not surprised UFC did pretty well. When I picked up the game on Friday they were only dishing out pre-orders, quite a few people in the line failed to get the game because they didn't pre-order. While Pokemon oddly enough still had plenty of stock.

I am suprside bout platinum. Pokemon is at its peak now and with the remakes hoho gamefreak shall be swimming breathing shiting money.May I ask how many copies were sold though?

UFC has had a metric fuckton of advertising in its favour though. You couldn't move for most TV channels (terrestrial or otherwise) without seeing a spot on it every half hour. Just goes to show... actually advertising your product really works (take note, SEGA).

Undisputed is bloody awesome - never mind what it's based on (although UFC's stock is definitely on the rise over here), but as fighting games go that don't feature ridiculous bosoms or fireballs, it's probably the best one to date. Yes, you have to put some effort into learning how to be good at it, but then them's the breaks of a game that emulates a real-life sport so well.

All I can say is that I think it's really nice that Layton is still so high up in the list.

Sales of wii fit must be getting lower if UFC managed to pass it. Nobody I know watches that stuff.
