British Sales Charts: Oh, So You Like Nintendo?

Last week’s British sales charts may, at first glance, appear grim reading. That is, until you cast your eyes down to eighth spot and see… Rhythm Heaven!

Or, as it’s known in PAL territories, Rhythm Paradise. How this game got so high, I don’t know, but the fact the quirky DS music title is sitting directly above Killzone 2 and Brain Training has – for a week, at least – renewed the outside world’s faith in the British public’s buying habits.

    @FunkyMunxy: Or more to the point- Celebrity advertising works better.

  • J4cK 0f He4rt5

    Who doesn't yet own Mario Kart DS?

    And hooray for Layton! I'm playing it at the moment (Im in the UK) and I hope it's huge sales here mean the sequel gets a translation.

  • NicolasCage

    @Pyrefly: Well to be fair, gyms didn't invent exercise either.

  • Nocturne_Rose

    @1up: I think it's been pretty popular, I was in GAME last week and a couple of Moms were asking if Million-heir was anything like Professor Layton as they wanted to get another game like it...

    the shop-grunt played it safe and went with "sort of".

    Ah, the generic answer, could be "I don't know", could be "similar, but I don't believe you'd understand if I explained the differen" or it could even be "no, but buy it anyway"

  • Archaotic

    Surprised Killzone is hanging on so tightly compared to how it did in the US. Guess the Euros like it more.

  • FunkyMunxy

    @ddhboy: No, Rihanna style is naked, and on the internet.

    As elliotcarpenter rightly said, this is no great triumph. There is a colourful poster of Beyonce sat in the window of my local gamestation plugging this game, appealing to teenage girls and adolescent boys in equal measures. Mystery solved - advertising works!

    @electroshockwave:

    its even more annoying when the UK version is usually delayed behind the american versions by months and months! JUST GIVE US THE US VERSION! you dont change it anyway!!!

    evilweevle

  • phicaluk

    @electroshockwave: In Britain, "Rythym Heaven" is the name of an unspeakably vile and perverse sex act, involving dogs, bicycle pumps and yoghurt.

  • MikoKeZ

    @Kobun: Pfft. What sort of a shut-in substitutes actual excersise, outdoor activities and sport for jumping round their living room?

    Gamers will dismiss it because it's not gaming.

    That's my opinion anyway, obviously looking at the sales charts it's not a common one.

    @Casual_Hardcore: I guess so.

    @Kobun:

    MikoKeZ

  • Pyrefly

    Jesus chris! this country has such poor taste in games!. I applaud awarding innovation but come on people, Wii Fit is not innovation it didn't fucking invent excercise you goons!

    The rest of us Brits must have some kind of consumer insanity or something.

  • tobz1000

    @1up: If it's any good, the casual public won't like it and vice versa; just as with films and music.

    tobz1000

  • Mancomb Seepgood

    Each week I'm shocked and surprised at us Brits and our appalling taste in games...stupid really, seeing as the chart reads exactly the same every week.

  • Peter Hodges

    @CockroachMan:

    You hit the nail on the proverbial there...

    Nintendo has this crazy penchant for making money, and they realised they could do that better by selling games to 'people' rather than 'gamers'.

    Now don't get me wrong here, I consider myself one of you. I have been gaming since the Atari 400, actually, we even had a Pong ripoff machine that predated that, but I digress... What I want to say is that as long as Nintendo keep trying to think of new ways to entertain me, I don't care if they fund that by selling some products that I have no interest in.

    oh and feel free to discount my opinion because of the F... if you even read this in the first place.

    Peter Hodges

  • Kobun

    @MikoKeZ: Leave if to gamers to continue to dismiss exercise as a "fad."

  • Casual_Hardcore

    @MikoKeZ: If it doesn't end, it's not a fad.

    Casual_Hardcore

  • metallicorphan

    yup,goes to show us Brits haven't got a fucking clue when it comes to buying games

    very suprised Chronicles of Riddick is right down there at number 39...maybe because its Atari,LOL

    i mean,Wii fit,Wii play,Rhythm Paradise,brain training,my fitness coach..all in the top 20...just fucking shoot us now,we don't deserve any games

  • Alaron

    @1up: You have no idea. Hell, just look at this crazy list

  • CockroachMan

    @BarryBrummie: CAUSE WIIFIT IS THE CANCER KILLING MAH VIDYA GAEMS!!!11!

    Yep, Nintendo finally developed a way to sell video games to non gamers, and I think that's fantastic. And the fact that Rhythm Heaven, a game considered niche on last gen, is getting good sales is even more amazing.

  • FantasyMeister

    I'm in the UK and bought Resident Evil on Saturday, so that one sale should rocket Capcom's title up to number 3 in next week's chart.

    Not one RPG in the top 40, I feel so... niche, but on the other hand Sacred 2 will have a chance of sneaking into the top 40 first week in June when it's released over here. I might buy 3 copies out of spite just to knock Wii Play out of its number 2 spot.

    FantasyMeister

  • 1up

    @Alaron: Haha game store customers are among the worst..

  • Numanoid

    @Iberianpower:
    This is madness!

  • Alaron

    @MikoKeZ: Hey man, with this fad it's just called the "Fit."

    Or at least that's what all my dumbass customers call it for some reason.....

  • 1up

    @CockroachMan: Damn straight! Fantastic game

  • Ironfistchinmi

    @Hooligunn: It's bundled with the 360, so that helps as well.

    Ironfistchinmi

  • 1up

    @Nocturne_Rose: Professor Layton was aimed towards a casual crowd, at least that's what I can see from the TV adverts they had on over here in Britain. I bet half the people who pick it up don't like it. And that's not to say it's a bad game, I think it's fantastic. Bring those sequels, Ninty!

  • Iberianpower

    Mmm ,13 360 games ,9 PS3 games ,only 6 Wii games but the same years old three of always in the top spots ...whats happening here ?

    Iberianpower

  • BarryBrummie

    Why is that a bad thing? It's a testament to the quality of the game and to the quality of how it was marketed. I'm wiling to bet most of the people that slag it off on kotaku dont even own it

  • CockroachMan

    Good to see Rhythm Heaven in there! :)

  • Jaziek

    @BarryBrummie: innovation rewarded... well over a year after the game was first released? There must be a near 100% wii: wii fit sales ratio in england.

    Jaziek

  • ddhboy

    @edhe (xbl): Is Rihanna style wearing big sunglasses to cover up the black eyes your boyfriend gave you?

    ddhboy

  • AusGamer

    @electroshockwave:

    it's called Rhythm Heaven here in Australia...

    [gonintendo.com]

  • ThursdayNext

    @bluebuju: Cool! Want to pick that up on the cheap.

    ThursdayNext

  • electroshockwave

    @electroshockwave: *some games like Rhythm Heaven

  • BarryBrummie

    Wii Fit is good and deserves to be there. There's nothing else out there like it. Would it really be better if another generic shooter got top spot? It's refreshing to see innovation rewarded.

  • electroshockwave

    Does anyone else get annoyed that NOE change the names of some games Rhythm Heaven for no apparent reason but doesn't bother to change the American-English in-game text?

  • bluebuju

    Oh dear. Riddick is almost out the chart already.

    bluebuju

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

    @Steffanic: lol Fad+ reminds me of Faith+1

  • El-Badass

    Despite the fact trash titles seem to make up around a quarter of the list, I guess it's an improvement....

  • KEELr

    What the hell Is wrong with people?
    2/3 of what Is on that list should've never even been made!

  • Steffanic

    @undefined: Uber-Fad? Fadder? Fad+?

    Steffanic

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

    @MikoKeZ: I simply don't know.
    I'm starting to think we may have to come up with a different term for this since a "fad" is usually far more short-lived.

    Maybe temporary consumer insanity or something.

  • CoatedTrout

    @Hooligunn: 24th isn't really significant, compared to nintendo sales.

    Oh, and I assume this Hooligunn is the same from Epic's forums?

  • edhe (xbl)

    @elliotcarpenter: I'd like to step forward into her. As she's tying a shoelace with clothing comparable to the Rihanna style.

  • Hooligunn

    Going down the list, I was impressed by seeing Halo Wars still remaining fairly high on the chart, and Gears also. Then I noticed:

    Halo 3 is 24th best seller in the UK. Wow. Coming up to 2 years old and still going strong in sales. No wonder Microsoft love the Halo franchise.

    Hooligunn

  • Numanoid

    Nice to see Killzone and Layton hanging in there.

  • elliotcarpenter

    blame/thank beyonce :) we brits have taken one very small but significant step forward.... because of beyonce...

    ohhhh....

  • MikoKeZ

    Who is still buying Wii Fit?

    WHY HASN'T THIS FAD ENDED ALREADY?

    That list is full of great games though, how different the last couple years have been for this generation.

    MikoKeZ

  • Nocturne_Rose

    Professor Layton still there.... WooT
    Are the US sales charts really any better, it can't just be the UK and Japan buying all those Wii Fits and Wii plays surely

    Nocturne_Rose

  • mzo

    quaint.

    mzo

  • Ero-Sennin

    The saddest thing here are the comments of "fad" amongst the lonely and obviously lowly hardcore "masses".

    Guess what?

    The Wii is a throwback to NES era gaming and I'm all for that. I don't need every game to be 1080p 7.1 surround and chock full of cutscenes and quick time events.

    I like playing my videogames, not watching them or spending 3 thousand dollars in order to get their value.

    Get over yourselves and stop bitching. If Microsoft and Sony had so many great games for their system that appealed to more than a bunch of people complaining on message boards, they would surely do as well as Nintendo.
