Until I see a full-length, PS1-era JRPG with high production values on XBLA/PSN, the services are both failures to me. They certainly have games worth playing, but there's only so many retro remakes, side scrolling shooters, and puzzle games I can take.

The death of the JRPG is really the main reason I hate this generation...nothing's come to fill the void except shitty shooters and cookie-cutter D&D simulators. Neither of which is worth the loss.

@Archaotic: you know, i felt like this a few years ago.. but lately.. ive been feeling alright about the industry. my favorite types of games are arcade style games.. and they were being shunned so much in favor of "block buster," faux films. i dont like games like gta or gears of war. if im gonna play a shooter, its gotta be fast paced (in most cases.. i like halo and goldeneye/perfect dark) like unreal or quake 3. i hate madden and nba live, but blitz and street are fun. but my main thing, fighting games had taken a hit the most. i think that everything goes in cycles, and we also witnessed the transition to 3d graphics. some kids will never know a time when games were ALL in 2d and made of sprites. now that devs really know 3d, we're seeing all kinds of interesting things come about, like borderlands. instead of a constant strive for realism.. i hate realism in video games.

but the number one thing i think that gives me hope for the biz is download services. with things like psn, xbox live arcade, and wiiware.. we can now have all the genres we liked from the past that disappeared mainly because companies couldnt justify sending out a 50 dollar beat em up or 2d platformer.. can now live along side all the boring stuff that sell the most. basically, its like music.. or like Killtacular said, movies. sure, the people only want the 50 cents, fall out boys, and katie perrys.. but im listening to daedalus, dr whodat, pigeon john, margot and the nuclear so and sos, and the list goes on just fine because anyone can make music and get it out there due to the internet. its cheap and easy, and thats how games are going.

I know it's not that far in the past, but wow... faded into the dark recesses of my memory, that one did. As I recall, the handling was similar to driving on a frozen lake covered in vasoline? Good times.

@Archaotic: I really agree with you. The constant increase in development costs is killing the industry. I personally had hoped that the Wii would be positive force in slowing down the budget inflation, but apart from a few great titles it has only segregated the market more.

Great games are still made though (buy Little King's Story), and there are a lot of inovative titles on the DS and the downloadables services, but you'll have to look harder to find them

And therein lies the problem. I've been made to suffer an industry that has no place for me for three years already; at some point, I'm just not going to have the heart to keep going. The more mainstream the industry gets, and the more expensive development costs become, the less likely we're going to be to ever see another Suikoden II, another Final Fantasy VI, another Chrono Trigger or even another Demon's Souls.

I've said before on Kotaku that this is my last console generation, and I don't think I'm going to be changing my mind any time soon.

@Archaotic: I mean this with sincerity, it sounds like you've changed, grown up a little, and now have a different perspective as a result. All things evolve, whether successfully or not. No one likes to part with something they've had a personal relationship with as it heads towards the 'mainstream', but it's necessary if it is to ever move on to something more significant. Eventually games WILL be looked at with the same regard that literature, film, theater, and other traditional mediums are today, but they need to get past these growing pains first.

I hate most movies these days. But I also know there's plenty of great films out there that get made every year. They just might not be the ones making $80 million their opening weekend, or the ones promoted on a Happy Meal box.

There's amazing stuff out there this gen- you just have to weed through more crap to get to it. My guess is that even if some of your favorite games from the past were released today, you'd still find them lacking, because time moves on and the innocence is lost.

Why do they even bother with Star Force 3? It's by far the weakest Megaman series ever and they would've been much better off putting their money on Megaman ZX.

But meh, I suppose it sold tons of copies to the littles kids in Japan...

It's not announced yet, but it's Capcom, and the PSP's resurrection is practically the key theme of this E3. With DMC Portable cancelled, Capcom's gotta have SOME way to appeal to PSP owners in the West.

The way the industry is moving, with focus on shorter, instant gratification titles with little to no story or characterization, the birth of the Blue Ocean, and the slow, painful bleeding-out of the RPG genre are all mixing together to form a core of hatred growing within my soul that makes it difficult to enjoy ANYTHING.

It doesn't help that as I've gotten older, I've been increasingly exposed to the dark side of the industry; the corporate bullshit, the betrayals, the moneyhats, people "doing it for the lulz"...when I was a kid playing the SNES or the PS1 (or even the PS2), I never sat down and contemplated what the next generation would be like. I lived in the present, took everything as it came, and enjoyed every minute of it.

Now I dread every moment that I'm connected to this industry, waiting for things to get shittier.

I hope they reveal something completely new. I'm way too tired of sequels.

@Glorax: I didn't mind Trucy as a replacement for Maya... I did mind Apollo as a replacement for Wright, though. Honestly, I'd be much more interested in a game starring him, though I'd still buy a sequel with Apollo. It's not that Apollo was bad, it's just... well, Wright was better, and Apollo's rival was kinda weaksauce. Not a bad character, but not main rival quality. Still, no one will ever live up to Godot, so I don't know what I expect.

@Glorax: Not really going to happen. Capcom Japan is working on a spin off which is set to release later this month in Japan, but no other Phoenix Wright game is in development by Capcom Japan don't expect an announcement outside of maybe a release date for the Edgeworth spin off.

@Archaotic: Personally I never really liked the JRPG genre and yes while the industry is getting weaker I still have high hopes because of companys like capcom, platinum games, Valve, and a lot of indy developers.
