China’s Take On Monster Hunter
What better way than to pay Capcom a compliment for its hugely popular Monster Hunter franchise than ripping it off?
Chinese game developers bring the world this: Hunter Blade. You can watch game footage and marvel at the ballsiness of the game — and font, even. It’s not Monster Hunter. Oh, no. This is different. This is Hunter Blade.
When asked about this game, Capcom apparently replied, “This title is not licensed by us and has no relation to our company.”

@Hiryu02: Because they have no shame, we feel double the shame. I'm Chinese-Canadian, and I haven't been to China, but yet things like this makes me embarrassed to be Chinese.
And you know they're huge fucking hypocrites. You should see some of the negative reactions to Kung-fu Panda. Something about Disney stealing their national symbols or other such things. Also check out the Chinese made "sequel" to the movie (which I'm sure has no mention of Disney anywhere).
Leanid
Wow china is like Carbon Copy Central,
It's like a business class in China consists of one 10 min class where the teacher says
"Remember when you were a kid and played make pretend, and your friend created a super awesome thing, so you went and made the same thing and said Nuh-Uh mines different because it has THIS NAME and not THAT NAME!" well that is business."
@Sutekh_Slain: I'm looking forward to the Neo Double Games version, personally.
roq
@n00b_pwner: All the time. That is why they are copying it. Well... partly.
@PPCK: Honestly, I totally understand your embarrassment. As a fellow Asian, when someone from my country does something stupid that paints my country in a bad light, I want to jump off a building.
Must be that overdeveloped sense of shame and racial identity.
Im going to laugh my ass off if this comes out in the USA and is successful yet Capcom failed to bring Monster Hunter PC over here.
Hell, you cant even try to log onto MH PC's Japanese server without getting banned.
Bubbleman!
@æµ´æ¦å£«!!!! I'd like to start a manga like that: Silly. Everybody knows that Japan will protect us with their Gundams.
Bubbleman!
@Krackatoa or...: Actually the difference is they don't have a proper licence and does not pay tribute to the original. Money is probably the only incentive, that motto just makes it easier for them to sleep at night.
Hello Daimyo Hermitaur! How are you.
Geez, this is... It just feels excruciatingly wrong to me, considering how much of Monster Hunter is personality. You can't copy that, just won't feel right. This is like the uncanny of knock-offs.
P-Flute
I think the sadder fact is that the US has a better chance at seeing this game translated than the actual Monster Hunter Frontier...
@Jevous:
That's no conga...
That's a blangonga!
KFJ
@PPCK: More so than usual? ;)
Span_Wolf
@KFJ:
Oh, and if you want to compare, try to search for blangonga Longsword or monoblos, or daimyo hermitaur.
KFJ
Hehe, they even ripped off purple daimyo, talk about being precise :D
KFJ
If release it in America instead of ignore us I'll buy it
LOL. People in China don't have any innovations do they? NOTE this is regarding citizens in China, not Chinese people in other countries where they are innovating
Hung Nguyen
They didn't even try to make it look like a different game. They used the same Monsters, the same Animations, the same weapons... This is closer to a pirated copy of Monster Hunter Frontier than it is a cheap imitation.
China does, indeed, have immense balls.
ChrowX
Oh my, everything from the conga's to the attack animations, the sound effects etc are almost identical! If it's a free MMO, then bring it on! ;)
Jevous
Guys, clearly they just got the source code for MH Frontier on the PC and change maybe 2 lines of the code and a coule of re-skins.
It's the exact same game. Combat mechanics and animation were blatantly stolen. I refuse to use the term "copy" for this one.
Do you know what? They should just release Hunter Blade for the PC in the US market since Capcom already failed to do that.
Go China! Whatever doesn't get u in a deep lawsuit, makes you richer!
lars18th
@Chrinkster: because they KHHAAAANNN!!
turius
Hopefully it'll come to PS3 since CAPCOM ain't doing jack.
@BarbeQueQ: ill hope for you ,that you know the difference between china and north korea...
turius
Why US does not have communist party ?
ye0073
"What's that coming over the hill? Is it a monster? Is it a monster?"
Nope, it's a knock-off.
BritBloke916
Well now, that's impressive. The title of that game actually sort of makes sense and is surprisingly applicable to the pirated intellectual property at hand. No "Fly Time Lizard Bang" or "Wow Hapy Gun" for these savvy Chinese entrepreneurs.
kiddoblivion
@Purevibe: That's because they cannot be stopped! Take down one illict vendor, new one appears the next day!
bloggerX
@surft:
This must be for the Chintendo Vii.
Coolux
@UltimateIdiot - Imperfection at Best: Haha
Hey_Blinkon
@Chrinkster: Because their government is scum and needs to go.
Valnen
@Fyrinn: Oh well, like people always say: nothing beats the original.
Of course, nobody has played this yet, and like you said, it just looks good.
Why does china always do this......
Chrinkster
@Airan: it's probably*
Airan
That's so sad. Even the Longsword animations were copied, probably frame for frame.
I'd still give it a shot though, knowing the chinese MMO market it's f2p with cash shop.
Airan
@UltimateIdiot - Imperfection at Best: no you got it wrong my country will do it, then my country will perish and the Chinese and along with the few survivors from the alien attack will band toghether and improve the aliens tech to defeat them
my country? Japan
Only MH players can understand how funny it is. Kotaku should've posted a MH vid for comparison.
PeachPurin
Come on, it's just "monster hunter-like" ! Why Half-Life news does'nt have an "Id Softawre" tag, then ?
Just kidding.
(or... am I ?)
China love to rip everything they can, off! Everytime i go shopping, there are a group of Chinese people selling fake DVDs. Why the police / Trading standards haven't caught & sent them bacl to China I don't know???
@PPCK: I read an article where some guy interviewed a number of artists at a studio in China where they replicated famous paintings by hand. They take a lot of pride in their work, even if the original ideas weren't their own.
They lived by the motto "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." and the work they did was absolutely stunning. The interviewer ended up getting self-portraits from the replicators based on the artists they were best at imitating (Van-gogh, Da Vinci), the results were marvelous pieces of artwork and a brilliant mastery of their respective mediums.
People recreate video games all the time in other countries. The number of remakes you can find on the internet are astounding if you take the time to look. The only difference in China is that they use it as a successful business model.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: The aliens will know the triple threat that is their own medicine, asbestos, and lead paint, and it will be sweet justice.
spannu
@bloodelves88: I'd disagree. I wouldn't call myself an expert or anything, but I've played A LOT of these knock offs, and most of them play terribly. On the other hand, they are really good at making things look good, but the quality's only on the surface. Most of the design people could probably get good jobs at a legitimate company, but the coders blow.
It's the same as most of the knock off products you see on eBay, really. The outside looks all fancy and well-made, but the meat of the product is always really, really shitty.
@UltimateIdiot - Imperfection at Best:
Damn anti gravity engines just fell apart onto the fission reactors main internal core! If only we used something better than cheep plastic to hold it together. Stupid Chinese UFO. At least its better than the Scottish one
@UltimateIdiot - Imperfection at Best: Dude I've seen them pirate schematics for a freaking bullet train and even remade a chunk of France in the middle of nowhere. They even have like 2 or 3 rip-offs of the Eiffel tower.
Backwards engineering alien technology doesn't sound far fetched at all after that shit. Though don't expect any quality from it.
It looks like the guy is fighting a Blango or a Blagonga,I could of swore they just ripped WoW not too long ago thats posted on this site as well.
Sweet, I just finished a hard quest and I'm ready to form the ultimate weapon! Craftshop Guy, make me an Akantor Great Sword!
"Okay. I make one sec."
"Here you go! You love it long time!"
Akuntar Blade? Rare-1? What the hell is-
*snaps in two*
"You break you buy!"
Damn Chinese MMO!
BubbleF**kingBuddy
@surft: Most Chinese knockoffs are pretty good actually. They're great at copying stuff.
Y'know what, I don't think I even have to say anything more than the following:
*facepalm*
Yeah, but that's probably because they ripped off EVERYTHING from Monster Hunter: Animations, combat, weapons, monsters, attacks, style, and even the levels were ripped off!
ManuelKapis
@PPCK: Likewise.
@PPCK: There is no need to be ashamed. I'm waiting for the day that Earth is at war with an alien race and China is the country who backward engineer their technology and use it against them.
But that's a bit too far fetch.
Giant crabs and MASSIVE DAMAGE!
SaanZ
Oh my....You never cease to make me smile, China.
On a related note: [www.cracked.com]
BarbeQueQ
In fairness it looks pretty good for a Chinese knockoff.
Coming to your Vii's 2010.
When will China ever learn?
im ashamed to be chinese...
PPCK
Should have gone with "Hunter of Monsters"
@SaanZ: Weak Point must be a copyright lawsuit.
mightyg
Monster hunter bootleg!
loempiavreter
BOY WHAT A UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL GAME!
@Bubbleman!: Oh man I lol'ed
@Bubbleman!: And their flying people that shoot energy from their hands too.
And ninjas.
@MyLittlePwny: haha.. you win sir
Eric Marty
@Bubbleman!:
You can, but make your name japanese or something, and just stay quiet, except of course in private conversations with other english people.
And Johnny English is not a good name. :P
KFJ
@SuperD: That motto was relating to the painters, not necessarily those working on this game.
I'd love to see Capcom's reaction, and perhaps legal reaction to this. Honestly for how closely it rips animations, monsters, and weapons, it deserves to be crushed much, perhaps in a similar manor to how I'd crush that Monoblos skull in that's on that crab's back.
@n00b_pwner: Nope, specially not that time where their official olympics website was caught with stolen flash games. D:
@n00b_pwner: When will Japanese companies will learn not to snub Chinese gamers?
astrixzero
@[en.wikipedia.org]
Which is much more important to historical development than anything Japan came up with. They didn't even invent video games.
astrixzero
@Leanid: It's called opinions buddy. Few people expressed criticism of Kung Fu Panda, which is overblown by the Western media as if they represent the entire Chinese public. Most Chinese actually liked the movie, and the "sequel" you mentioned is nothing like KFP at all.
astrixzero
@PPCK: And I'm ashamed that you call yourself Chinese. Most Chinese gamers has to settle for cheap copies because Japanese video game companies often ignore the Chinese market, withholding releases there. They treat the Chinese gamers like pirates, so it's obvious that they will reply in turn.
astrixzero
Capcom should take note, Monster Hunter is one of the most popular games in China. Go to the subway at any given time in Shanghai and you're likely to see someone playing Monster Hunter on their PSP. The popularity of the game there is probably equal to that of Japan, where you see normal every day folks of all types (including good looking girls) play the game. The game is hugely popular with no marketing and no official presence (unlike WoW which had huge marketing campaigns and coke tie-ins with celebrity endorsements). Why is it popular? Because it's fucking awesome and Chinese people just appreciate the hell out of it. Capcom is foolish for not officially releasing Monster Hunter in China in any capacity. Yes it's funny that someone just ripped all the assets from the PSP version and made their own game, but it's also a sign of just how badly people want to play that game. Wake up Capcom! Give the people what they want!
bluecat2095
to be honest, i think this is capcom's fault, monster hunter was just as popular in china as it is in japan. they refused to release monster hunter for years even though the market was already receptive of it. piracy is unavoidable but if you do at least bother to release it, there would still be some people who'll buy it.
warcraft isnt pirated because you have to buy it to go online to play and all monster hunter needs to do to beat that or compete with the sales, is make online play in monster hunter accessible to china.
sometimes i wonder why jap companies are so brilliant at making games but so fucking shitty at marketing decisions.
gamejournalistsarekillinggames
@turius: lol xD
