Cryptic Studios To Rehash Old Atari IP In “A Series Of New Games”
When City of Heroes developers Cryptic were bought by Atari last year, it was said they’d be working on a single, secret game due in 2011. Now it turns out they’re working on several games.
Atari’s yearly fiscal report has revealed that Cryptic “is working on the development of a series of new games based on Atari’s existing and historically successful IPs”. Existing and historically successful, hey?
Looks like my dreams of an ET MMO – based on the events of the game’s mass grave, not the motion picture – might be about to come true.
Might.

Ok. If they came out with a massive RPG (Oblivion style) based on Adventure (my all-time favorite 2600 game) I would freak out.

@John Alderman:
Crystal Castles is actually the name for a game? I wonder if that's how the band got their name.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Pong of Duty.

I still have my copy of E.T. and, you know, when I was little, I never thought it was a terrible game. That is to say, it's an Atari game and many of them had no story, terrible graphics, and poorly designed gameplay mechanics. It wasn't the best game, but it never struck me as the worst game.
Hell, the NES has plenty of games that play far worse, just none of them were based on a 20 million dollar deal with Steven Spielberg. (Try the Conan the Barbarian game, or Legacy of the Wizard.)
Also, I've always understood that the E.T. cartridges were smashed before being buried, making any dreams of recovery rather pointless.

Pac-Man?

Uppity versions of Space Invaders, that Tank one, and Adventure?

... City of Heroe's developers were bought by NCSoft. The only CoH developer still with Cryptic is Jack Emmert, and the player base CELEBRATED when he was gone for good.
Adventure, Yars Revenge, Berserk, Crystal Castles, Defender, Galaxian, Kangaroo, Krull, NIGHT DRIVER, Pole Position, Sinistar, the Swordquest series of games, Warlords, and Tempest.
Some of the games listed above weren't developed by Atari but when I was a kid they were my favorite games. I don't know exactly how they would translate in a remake but I can't imagine they would be any worse.

What about Kaboom, Maze Craze, and Big Birds Egg Catch?
Are any of those Atari? They where on the Atari system... can I get a new copy of them now? That would be sweet!

You think they would actually take a risk and release a 3D tennis game without those stupid blocks?
So this is Atari's big plan for revitalizing their company name. New iterations of what... Missile Command? For real? Is that the best you can do? NOW we KNOW WHY they fired Phil Harrison.
Phil probably wanted to come in with NEW ideas, huge changes, making new IPs with new and updated engines. Which, in the long run, would have been the best solution. But of course, Atari being Atari... lame, cheap and stupid. "Wooaah, there new guy, that's going to take time and talent. Can we just do what we always do? Half-ass it, and re-re-release Centipede for the millionth time. That wil make us a quick buck, with no time and effort."
"Yeah... nobody wants to see those tired old games anymore.", says Phil
"No, I'm sure you're mistaking, nostalgia is the hot thing right now.
"Um... the 2600 is dead, and has been for a long time. Move on."
"You're fired. We thought you was cool"
"I am cool, way to cool for you losers. Later, douche bags."
E.T. or Alone in the Dark?
God, it's like asking would you like Cancer or Aids.

You know, just the other day I said to my friend Gorloth how much I enjoyed "remix" version games, and wish that videogame companies put out more "remix" games and spent less time on original IPs. My friend, Gorloth, found this idea even more rediculous and asinine than him being my imaginary friend that was conjoured up only for this post, so he quickly severed all ties with me and I haven't heard from since I made him up not 30 seconds ago.
An ET MMO would be aweomse only if we got to be the guys in the radiation suits and the entire game centered around chasing ET through a forest, and then beating him with sticks. It doesn't just have to a forest- I also envision a Planet of the Apes esque level where you, on your radiation suitted stallion in your radiation suit, chase ET through a field of tall grass and whip him with long sticks or trap him in nets. And another where your teammates and self individually control 5 lion robots, which then combine into a larger, humanoid robot, who then beats ET with a stick. Can't lose.
Hmm. Atari didn't really have any big franchises, game wise. All their killer stuff on the 2600 were conversions of other peoples games. Of course, depends what they mean by 'old'.
