D3 Does Astro Boy

Only one robotic child stands between Metro City and the evil President Stone’s robot army in Astro Boy: The Video Game, coming this October from D3 Publisher.

Astro Boy: The Video Game for the Nintendo Wii, DS, PSP, and PlayStation 2 is the game adaptation of Imagi Studios’ new CG-animated movie, being released internationally this October. Astro Boy journeys throughout Metro City and the mysterious Surface, taking on hordes of robots using his traditional weapons: Finger Lasers, Arm Cannon, Drill Attacks, and my personal favourite – Butt Machine Guns. Developed by High Voltage Software, the game promises intuitive combat and flight, along with a slew of classic Astro Boy unlockables.

I’ll have to wait until I see more from the game before getting excited. While my nostalgia gland says yes, my movie tie-in gland says no. Remember back when film animators used to actually draw? Those were the days.

    @BlueWizard422: I wish they'd call Treasure back in to do these games. I'm gonna have to go dust off my copy now.

  • mackincheese

    @Akua: I thought I recognized that CG style. Not in the art itself, just in the way it was animated.

  • 浴武士!!!! I'd like to start

    @AveryFronto: when he found out he would have to perform in front of americans

  • AveryFronto

    I hope it turns out as good as it looks, and makes me want a Mega Man film of the same caliber.

    @AveryFronto:

    No, he's still got it.

    Watch the trailer.

    Imagi did the 3D for the recent TMNT game, so I actually have high hopes for this one.

    @L___E___T: Old 80's cartoon? Wouldn't that be old 50's or 60's cartoon Astro Boy?(or even older for the manga)

  • TrueCrime

    Hopefully we'll see a lot of Tezuka's characters in this one. I know we're never going to come close to Omega Factor, but I'd love to see a decent punch-up with Pluto.

  • AveryFronto

    Forget the shirt, that picture looks like he lost his spiky hair! Without that he looks really really dull.

    No 360 love? Too bad...

    @Mosquixel:

    The 2005 Astro Boy remake series was awesome, it didn't get dropped though, there was a good 50 episodes that were based in part on the old 80s cartoons.

    That apart, Studio Ghibli still make wonderful hand drawn anime and always will.

  • BarbeQueQ

    @rupeokong64: True that.

    Man, I hate western Animators.

  • Ueziel

    @BlueWizard422: If you haven't played Henry Hatsworth, you would do well to do so. It's basically Astro Boy on the top screen with Tetris Attack on the bottom whenever you need powerups or there's a neat boss attack that involves the puzzle part.

  • bkchurch

    Well the GBA game that came out a few years back was pretty fun. PS2 game had wonky controls however and this is a movie game so I won't hold my breath.

    When did he get a shirt?

    @BlueWizard422:
    Omega Factor is a great game, one of the best on the GBA.
    Can't agree with jackal888 though, yes it's tough but not that hard. I never play games on easy.

    "Americanizing the shit out of it" - made me lol.

    Good day to you, sir. :)

    @jackal888: It took me so long to beat the game on Hard, but God that game was so good.

    I hope the handheld versions can hold a candle to the Treasure game.

  • rupeokong64

    As long as Studio Ghibli lives, hand-drawn animation will never die. Shonen Jump too :P

    rupeokong64

  • Ero-Sennin

    The movie actually looks amazing, and pays tribute to Tezuka's work by not Americanizing the shit out of it.

  • TaggarT6 trips the light fantast

    @BlueWizard422: That game was fantastic. A must play for any one with a GBA.

  • Akua

    @UsernameOfTheDead: Yeah, its made from the same people that did the TMNT movie.

  • jackal888

    @BlueWizard422: Yeah, there is little hope that this is as good as that GBA game. THat is one of my favorite GBA games. It made me understand Astro Boy for the first time. JUst do not play it on anything but EASY MOde. THat game is so difficult.

  • UsernameOfTheDead

    This movie will actually be good.

    As they note there on Filmdrunk, the "Boy built for Adventure" is perhaps an unfortunately tagline :P

  • BubbleF**kingBuddy

    @Mosquixel: There was a new Astro Boy series a few years ago. It was a collaboration between eastern and western animators, and it ran for about 2 seasons before being dropped.

    Mike Fahey must not remember the two good Astro Boy tie-in games that came out a few years back.

  • BlueWizard422

    If it's any bit as fun as Astro Boy: Omega Factor, count me in!

    ...but that was made by Treasure. Oh boy.

  • Mosquixel

    Those good ol' hand drawn days are gone with the wind.

  • interim is a biscuit

    @Mosquixel: Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

  • BlueWizard422

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy:ONE good Astro Boy game. That PS2 game was not good.

  • Ash_Lynx

    Why isn't Treasure doing this one, WHY? Oh yeah, probably because this movie is being made in Hollywood and not Japan.

    Still, if it's anywhere near as good as Omega Factor, count me in, shame it set the bar so incredibly high for it!

  • Flyhawk

    @BlueWizard422: Omega Factor was awesome definatly one to get when it comes out on the DSi virtual console, oh wait...

    My favourite publisher and my favourite childhood TV show. This is gonna be a day one purchase for sure.

    I hope they don't ruin my dad's childhood comic book!

    @BarbeQueQ:
    Meh, don't bash a one particular group for poor animation - a lot of studios are guilty of that nowadays.
    I think it'd be pretty interesting to see Disney go back and do a full-scale, original, 2D animated movie just once more, though.

    Nonetheless, Long Live Ghibli!

  • Blah8

    @interim is a biscuit:
    Well I do.
    I guess it's mostly nostalgia, but I still prefer a good 2D, hand-drawn movie to most newer 3D ones. There's a few exceptions (Wall-e, first Toy Story, etc.) but there's still something cool about watching one of the older animated classics.

    Blah8

  • Civ2boss

    @Mosquixel: The Pixar/Disney people know and love hand-drawn stuff and they say they will bring it back. I just know it will be as good as their computer animated stuff.

    I mean it's actually kinda silly to single out hand-drawn and computer animated. It's not the way it's animated, it's the story and the characters. If you have those two, it doesn't matter if it's hand-drawn, computer, or claymation.
