Don’t Expect Localized Game Center CX Sequel

Game Center CX is a fantastic reality TV show with a couple of fantastic DS games. The first game made it to the US with a localised version. That doesn’t mean its sequel will.

The DS games knowingly pay homage to Famicom-era day games of yore. The first game was introduced to American gamers as Retro Game Challenge by publisher XSEED. “Retro Game Challenge started off well but still hasn’t gotten to the point where we can justify bringing over the sequel,” XSEED’s Ken Berry said in a recent interview. “It’s amazing how many people write to thank us for publishing that game, so perhaps as those enthusiast fans continue to spread the word we will get to where we need to be eventually.”

Nice letters don’t translate into big sales. They do translate into nice letters, which is heartwarming. Heartwarming doesn’t pay the bills, though. And that’s sad.

    @Channing: Takahashi? Yeah, she was cute ^_^

  • hondo

    @Yin:

    I've been watching the untranslated eps too. I don't know what he's saying but it's still a blast to watch. I've managed to collect eps 1 - 54... still working on the others though...

  • phinehas

    @Yin: Yeah, I've been watching translated videos on Youtube, it's my new favorite show. Made and executed by people who not only love videogames but also know all the tricks/history. It's sweet.

  • phinehas

    @KotakuFreund: I think we're talking about 2 different types of limitations here:

    1) The limit on the amount of games can be held on a system. This was a problem with the Wii until recently when they announced additional storage capability with SD cards. This type of limitation was not a good one and was complained about for a long time.

    2) The allowable size limitation of a game that is uploaded to WiiWare or DSiware. I don't know what the strict size limitation is for either the Wii or the DS, to be honest, but this is something that is most likely regulated by Nintendo.

    What I was trying to say above, and may have become muddled, is that it's a bit strange to expect a full-sized cartridge based game to be released on the DSi. Essentially it could be done (I think), but it's a rather peculiar thing to complain about or expect.

  • KotakuFreund

    @phinehas: I never Heard about that limitations, there are limitations for the Wii Shop but for the DSi Shop?

    KotakuFreund

  • FarmboyinJapan

    @phinehas:

    Well, they may still have them.

    There was a box filled with about 50 cameras, and then there was an opened box stacked behind it. It looked like they had close to a hundred on hand.

    FarmboyinJapan

  • Kazzahdrane

    @L___E___T: Assuming things and then blaming people based on those assumptions is super-fun!

  • phinehas

    @FarmboyinJapan: Wow, I want one of those cameras. I live down in Kyushu, though, and prob. won't get to Tokyo for a few months now. Darn it.

  • Zaxxon Q Blaque

    Oh for the love of... Damnit people, but the GOOD games, will ya?!?! Stop buying the DS games with the "Z" at the end! They keep making them, because you keep buying them! Gawd, you ruin it for everyone!!! >_<

  • phinehas

    @Kamakazie: Definitely no argument there (I mean, that's what limitation means), but I just thought it was strange to call it a "giant failing content limit", since there was no one expecting Nintendo to do full DS cartridge-released downloadable games on DSi. Is all.

    This isn't quite the same as the no-space issue on the Virtual Console fiasco.

  • MooglesInMyFace

    @FarmboyinJapan:

    WTF. Unopened Gameboy cameras for 200 yen? That's about $2 right? WOW!

    MooglesInMyFace

  • FarmboyinJapan

    @pigz0011:

    I work in Tokyo, spent 99% of my free time in Tokyo, do all of my shopping in Tokyo, but I live in Ibaraki.

    I found it at the Yurakucho Bic Camera at about 3 this afternoon. There was a big bin filled with titles being marked down, and as far as I could see, there were three other copies remaining.

    Totally unrelated note, I don't know how much of a Gameboy fan you are, but Super Potato in Akihabara got in a shipment of UNUSED, UNOPENED Gameboy Cameras....going for 200 yen a pop. Not 200 dollars...200 yen.

    By the way, the term "Farmboy" comes from me being born and raised in Indiana.

    FarmboyinJapan

  • pigz0011

    @FarmboyinJapan: Could you be so kind as to tell me where you found that incredible deal Mr. Farmboy? Given your name, I'm guessing you're not in Tokyo.

    pigz0011

  • MooglesInMyFace

    Nooooooo! BUY THIS GAME DAMMIT.

    MooglesInMyFace

  • Kamakazie

    @phinehas: If it weren't for the limitations this game would absolutely fit on the internal storage.

    Kamakazie

  • Channing

    The AD from season 7 was cute. :3

  • Yin

    I love this TV series, I'm even watching the eps in japanese since I ran out of subbed ones even if my understanding of japanese is very basic... It's just so good. So I'm sad to see the second game go untranslated... Well, maybe a fan translation can happen.

  • phinehas

    @King of Fun UK: I guess you could blame it on the content limit... sort of. I mean, nobody really expected for a full-fledged Nintendo DS cartridge game to be available in the DSi store.

    But if you think this is comparable to the Virtual Console's memory limit, it's not quite the same. Something comparable would be, say, expecting a Wii disc-based game to be download only. Not really a priority on that system.

    At least, if that's what you're talking about.

  • Struct09

    I did my part :(

  • King of Fun UK

    @phinehas: Is this another one Nintendo's giant failing content limits? Urghhh.

  • phinehas

    @King of Fun UK: Game wouldn't fit in DSIware. Perhaps each individual game on the cart would, but I don't see that happening.

  • phinehas

    @Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: You may not be aware of this, but the retro games in the game are nearly identical to real world games. Star Prince, for example, is basically Star Force:

    Galaga is another one. What's awesome, though, is that they don't skimp on these games - they're full fledged versions which will take you days to weeks to master.

    But yes, definitely way too obscure for the avg. gamer, which is unfortunate. The love for the medium is nearly dripping off the cartridge.

  • FarmboyinJapan

    Well, the second one didn't sell for shit in Japan either.

    I just picked up the sequel, which came bundled with the DVD, brand new on sale for 15 bucks today...

    FarmboyinJapan

  • King of Fun UK

    Obviously this is a niché title. Stick it on DSiWare or something, at least that way you don't have to go through the hoops of trying to publish it.

  • phinehas

    This game(s) was awesome. The challenges from these fake retro games have had me more interested than in the consoles plugged to my TV.

    I highly recommend this game, even if the second one isn't going to come out in the states.

  • Revenge_of_Nekojin

    @L___E___T: That's quite a leap in logic, there.

  • fronsac

    @hondo:
    In all fairness, I only remember the Dragon Warrior series doing the "Press A to Pull Menu, Select Talk and Then Press A" to talk to someone. The Final Fantasy games, NES and Gameboy, only required to press A. Can't remember of any other RPGs I played on the NES tough, so maybe Final Fantasy was the exception, not the norm...

    fronsac

  • Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming

    I enjoyed it, but the games just felt like inferior versions of good retro games and the whole story didn't really do anything for me. The whole Game Fan Magazine was cool, but it's no surprise the mainstream didn't pick up on it. Way too obscure for most people outside Japan.

  • hondo

    I picked this game up a few weeks ago and it's currently my top fave game. I love the show and heard good things about the game but I didn't realize how much fun I would have with it. I'm finding so refreshing to play the NES style games with in and funny when you see the kind of early game design they've included to keep things on par with the 80's. Best example is in the RPG section, when you want to talk to someone you don't just walk up and press A... oh no... you walk up, press A to bring the drop down menu, select the TALK option and then you can talk to someone.

    Now if that doesn't take you back... ^_^

    Oh, and these games aren't just snippets and mini games. They're whole, full games! With endings, cheat codes and everything!

    Anyway, I've talked enough about this game. But if you're a lover of classic and retro games... then you should pick this up... because I want to play the sequel damn it!

  • L___E___T

    @marcus_ivo:
    downloaded? so, you didn't buy the first one either? that's why that 'downloaded' copy will stay in Japanese mate, thanks.

  • BryanH

    @marcus_ivo: Them too.

  • marcus_ivo

    @BryanH: Thapan.

    marcus_ivo

  • marcus_ivo

    I loved the first title, and I downloaded the second in Japanese but it's pretty hard to play when you can't understand the challenges. Still! Looks like a great game!

    marcus_ivo

  • BryanH

    That's where Retro Game Challenge came from?

    Thanks, Japan.

  • boco

    Aww, no Super Kung-Fu Fighting in English? I guess I'll have to import it and just play Mutekiken Kanfu then...

  • Therodofgod

    @fronsac: 7th Saga for the SNES used a similar method

  • blizzardjesus

    If you haven't bought it yet, go buy it. Today.

  • Solarman

    I love Retro Gaming Challenge. If people don't buy this game, then they are part of the problem and why shovelware still gets to have tons of sequels, and not good games.

    Solarman

  • Yoshi3gg

    I bought Retro Game Challenge just a few weeks ago after watching a few subbed episodes of Game Center CX online (AMAZING show, by the way), and have had a lot of fun with it; I've almost completed it, Ijust need to finish Guadia Quest!

    It's really sad to see that we won't be getting the sequel, but at the same time, I'm not all too surprised: I think Retro Game Challenge is a LOT more enjoyable if you're familiar with Game Center CX, and considering how few episodes have been given English subtitles, it's not that surprising that people don't know much about it.

  • celery

    @marcus_ivo: AAAAA+++++ would read again.

  • Parsifal

    Okay, for starters, how about a higher profile on the ad campaign? I generally keep an eye on everything going on and this totally slipped by me. I'm one of those people that was crossing their fingers for a port of this and I had no idea that it released here under a different title.

    *heads off to browse for places to pick this up*

  • DarkNight_DS

    I'm one of the people who wrote into Xseed about how much I enjoyed the game. Too bad most of the people on here with a DS haven't given it a try. It's a classic in it's own right.

    DarkNight_DS

  • Telly_Vision

    I'm really, really sad to hear that this won't be getting a local release. As I live in Australia, I knew that Retro Game Challenge wouldn't get a local release, so I made sure I bought the excellent localized US version from Play-Asia.

    Seeing as we won't be getting an English release of Game Center CX 2, I guess I'll just have to buy the Japanese release from Play-Asia... Super Demon Returns is AWESOME. As is that puzzle game. And I love the Famicom Detective game where you hear Arino say "Now loading..." while waiting for the game to load. =)

    Telly_Vision

  • Pikadrew

    @Therodofgod: ahh, 7th saga. There's hardcore retro rpg goodness for ya. I remember dying multiple times in the first dungeon when you had to fight your rival the first time. I don't know why I loved that game as much as I did, now that I think about it. It just made me grind for hours so I could get stomped on the second I made it to the next zone.

  • develin

    @Revenge_of_Nekojin: Hmmm, sure, like the leap of jumping from sb saying
    "Oh, by the way, I removed your duck from your backyard, because its quacking drove me insane ..... By the way will you join us for roasted duck tonight" to assuming that they ate 'your' duck. Of course they might have called animal services and bought a new duck for dinner...

    develin

  • Chris Torres

    Nooo, don't say that.

    Shut up.

    I don't want to believe you. :(

    Chris Torres

  • Revenge_of_Nekojin

    @develin: I download Japanese games quite often. Doesn't mean I don't buy American ones.

  • GenRedLeader

    Awwwww... I just got this one a few days ago... I've really been enjoying it. :\ I also noticed the ad for the TV Show on the back of the manual but... What channel is it on? Hopefully, not G4... I'm not paying for that. :p
