Electronic Gaming Monthly To Return
EGM is dead. Long live EGM! The struggling game magazine that shut down in January after nearly twenty years in print is returning later this year, courtesy of Electronic Gaming Monthly founder Steve Harris.
According to an announcement, Harris has acquired publishing rights and trademarks to EGM, with plans to restart the print publication in the second half of this year.
Harris calls the relaunch of Electronic Gaming Monthly a “welcome opportunity to continue delivering quality content to gaming enthusiasts,” saying the new EGM team has “exciting plans for the evolution of what will once again be a leading independent voice for the gaming community.”
The mag has the enthusiastic, but not necessarily financial backing of Ziff Davis.
“We are pleased that EGM is now in the hands of its original creator, Steve Harris, and wish him and the publication the best of success in the future,” says Ziff CEO Jason Young.
The press release states that we’ll hear more about the new EGM at next week’s E3 expo. For now, a placeholder site featuring the announcement, with links to the resuscitated mag’s Twitter and Facebook accounts resides at EGMnow.com.

Good, fulfill my remaining subscription
I dunno how I feel about this, I love EGM but EGM wasn't just a title it was the people that worked there. Now that all those guys gone for the most part can EGM recapture what made it awesome?
@Mr. Mew: Yessss! My toilet has been lonely lately. So cool Harris is back in the fray too. I will be signing up for 5 years right off the bat.
Boo. They stopped being good a long time ago. Now I can't say I have the last issue anymore.
Danved
hooray!
now, to kill off gamepro...

@SNAK3ATER: Before it fails again you mean? I'm not trying to be an asshole, but print media is dying. I really don't see the point in bringing this back in print. I'm don't have the numbers in front of me, but I imagine prior to EGM going under that the numbers weren't good. I fail to see how bringing it back is going to fix this problem.
@ph15h: Pre-E3 Filler... -_- Yay: If you actually paid for your subscription, you should be able to call and get a refund. That's what I did several months ago anyway.
Coltage
I already paid for 8 more issues than I got and the staff that made EGM great is pretty much gone now. So...
@MSUHitman: Since your situation is a little different, I don't know how any refund will work for you. Several months ago, they were able to see my balance and refund it when I called. Good luck to you!
Coltage
@dafthero:
Yeah, RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE! and also POWER UP! and then you growl like WUUUUUUOOOOOOOOHHH! and transforms! 1st game i've played on Genesis, that and Super Monaco GP.
BlitzGrilo learned PK Starstorm
I am very excited about this. Been a fan of EGM for a long time. And I was super disappointed when my subscription got replaced with Rolling Stone and Blender (Rolling Stone is ok, but Blender sucks and got shut down too).
Froggore
@hansamurai: No idea, but I called and got a refund several months ago with no hassle.
Coltage
Hooray for print media. Now if only Tips & Tricks would resurrect itself from those lousy "Codebooks" back into the magazine I fell in love with 13 years ago.
@octalass: If you want your money back, you can always call the number in one of your emails or magazines and ask for your money back. Worked for me.
Coltage
@Deaf Mute: Call and ask for a refund. It only took me a couple of minutes. No hassle.
Coltage
*dances*

If anything needs a bailout it's EGM. It's way better than most GM cars.
Wise fwom youw gwave!
liquidnumb
@sanyo: MAKE IT DOUBLE!
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx: Just find the number to call on one of your old magazines or emails and ask for a refund. It literally took just a minute or two to get my money back. The person on the phone was really nice.
Coltage
So what about us people who had like 4 months left on their subscription when EGM died? Do we get 4 months free or did those 4 disappear.
I doubt I'll get the issues I'm "owed" from the Ziff Davis days.
Back in 2004 when I went to E3 (working internet tech support for Charter at the time) I got a plan for 4 magazines for 3 years each for $40 total as an "industry exclusive." 3 of those magazines (the Electronics Boutique store magazine, Offical Playstation, and Computer Gaming Monthly) all folded and my remaining time was always transfered to EGM.
I think my Wolverine issue said I was still good until 2012.
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx:
Um they wont have anything to do with that as far as I know. Ziff Davis holds those.
MooglesInMyFace
I should probably be ecstatic about this, but before EGM died (the first time), I sorta grew apart from the magazine. I did have a subscription, but once that expired, just didn't bother to continue.
I will say though, if I were to get back into reading monthly gaming material, it would be EGM. Last time I had an issue, they had a good format and some interesting reads. Certainly not perfect, but closer than other publications.
So does that mean that my subscription that was supposed to run through the end of the year will continue?
day fucking one
MooglesInMyFace
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx: Tell me about it. I had been a member for about the same amount of time when they went out of business. But the minute I first heard it was happening ( read it on Kotaku about a month before the last issue came out ) I literally immediately called and cancelled. I got lucky since I got my full refund.
Lately, I've been toying around with the idea of subscribing to either GameInformer (meh) or PC Gamer (my first choice only I have no idea how good it is lately). I think I just might wait a bit and re-subscribe to EGM instead.
Hmm...this is an unusual thing to hear: a video game magazine rising from the ashes. Could be an awesome thing. Then again, a magazine is only as good as its editorial staff. If the staff isn't as good (and I would have to say that EGM's staff when they were shut down was about as good as it gets) then the Magazine may be better off dead.
We'll have to wait and see (as with most things)
Desanvium
@bobdisgea3: Screw you dammit! I probably sent this in like 2 minutes after you did. lol.
I haven't had the subscription for 10 years, but those really were the golden years IMO. These days all the magazines are have a light salting of content to go with their main course: ads. Not that EGM was really better in this respect, but I thought their articles were entertaining and informative.
I'd read it again if the founder recreates it, best of luck to him.

holy shit im the one who sent it in! i figured id be late. best new ever.
So... the guy who create/fund the magazine and then sold it. It's now taking out of it's grave?
They better resume my subscription
Long live EGM!!!
Instead of everyone being bitter that they lost a little something, how about being elated that it's coming back?
I just saw Steve Harris mentioned, and instantly thought "why would the Iron Maiden bassist have anything to do with EGM?"
@Deaf Mute: Seriously, only a month before it was announced that they were cancelled I was pestered to buy a new subscription and I figured (hey I do like this magazine though I'm sure I'm entitled to a couple more months of issues) and did it.
Then they went 'lol BROKE' and ran off with my money. :/
THAT'S GREAT NEWS BECAUSE THOSE BASTARDS HAVE YET TO GIVE ME A REFUND FOR MY NEW YEAR OF SUBSCRIPTIONS
YES! ANAL REVIEWS FROM SKINNY WESTCOASTERS!
But without the old crew it won't be the same ...
Christian Hedlund
I was wondering if I was going to have to subscribe to Gamepro, or get down with Game Informer to satisfy my gaming mag needs.
With EGM coming back from the dead, I do not have to make that choice.
Bluevirage
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx: Don't get me wrong, EGM is a great magazine, but having it go out of business after 4 months left a bitter taste in my mouth.
WOO! EGM was a huge part of my childhood and I'm glad to hear it's coming back!

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE! haha, what a great reference. does anyone else remember that god-awful sound your guy makes when you fall in a pit in, Altered Beast?

Wow. I await whatever this is with cautious anticipation.
Hopefully they don't screw me on the 8 months they still owe me.

@Jimbotron: Retailers don't care what the reviews are, they care about adding value to their particular "clubs" or purchases. Advertisers DO care what the reviews are ...
Look at the number of periodicals folding - advertising isn't enough to sustain them. Without an alliance of some sort, it'll fail just like EGM volume 1.
As much as i love EGM I'm afraid the print media is on it's way out, I'd rather they release it in .pdf form rather then waste paper, only to go back into oblivion where they can't be profitable. As of now I only read magazines in the bathroom while im "doing the thinking man". Welcome back EGM but you won't last long.
@Jimbotron: I don't live my life around video games. I come on, see news, watch some vids and move on. I feel no need to bring it with me.
And they are video games, who cares if reviews and stories on them get lost forever? I can honestly say that I have NEVER read ANYTHING about video games that I would want to save for all of time.
Yes! I finally have something to read on the can again!
spikespeigel
Was this the magazine that had reviews by the "Jaded Gamer" way back in the mid-late 90s?
I loved those articles! I still remember one about Wide Wally's War Wagon, or something along those lines.
Thut
@Coltage: Thanks for the tip!
For those who threw their mags away or can't find the number online, call 8007791174, or 3865974370 (outside US). It literally took just a minute.
@trunkenmath: because there is no edit button
Does this mean the return of Sushi-X?
TheOnlineLegend
@jayntampa: It is relevant. If they did that, almost everyone on here who is praising EGMs return would be bitching and whining. They can still get ads without aligning with certain retailers. Hopefully the industry will be supportive of EGM and advertise robustly in the magazine.
Jimbotron
@Shinta: GamePro seems t obe aimed at the wide audience, from kids to adults, which is nice. Some of the stuff in the Spawn Point section seems aimed towards the younger audience, but their everything else seems to be geared towards the older reader. It's certainly not as good as it used to be, but it's pretty good compared to the other magazines out, and much better than EGM was in the last couple of years. Though, these days all the magazines are laid out the same, they all seem to be generic copies of each other.
Jimbotron
@Xenigma: Well, I only have one problem now, I subscribed to Gameinformer to cover up for EGM as I was already subscribed to Pc Gamer, if they refund my subscription (which I doubt they will) I'll end up replacing one of the two later on.
YOU CAN'T KILL EGM!
Ragglefraggle
Pardon my french. BEST FUCKING NEWS I HAVE HEARD TODAY!!!
Rickslamu2
It was always one of the worst gaming mags anyways...worse than Gamepro even... very little substance in proportion to images and ads -- I guess it's a decent mag for 12 year olds but beyond that I wouldn't miss it.

@ReconToaster.: Wow, which person at EGM were you blowing? Kiss ass....
@Fieldy: Same here. I read it on Kotaku, and called them to cancel. (actually I asked them if i was going to get fucked over, in which they said they would give me a full refund.)
Have since signed up with game informer. Something to read on the shitter, since I already know most of the stuff they talk about in the rags due to online sites.
Paper is becoming obsolete for media purposes. Online is becoming the standard.
Really glad to see Harris pick this up. EGM was respectable with him at the helm, hopefully it will be again.
KaneRobot
Yes, thanks to me. Lol.
The fact that him and I share the same name makes me kinda happy.

Ahh, I get it, you must be one of those wonderful people that make voice-chat a blast to turn use. In fact, I bet you're a blast to have a plain ol' conversation with! >.>
There were plenty of reasons for "smart-ass" responces. I bet every thing you write is inciteful eloquent.
I did not however, enjoy the "guest" reviewers from other mags(especially those from PSM)as they seemed unreasonably whiny from time to time.
This may be the internet; the home of offensive language, but please filter yourself. Anger and hate can be expressed in ways that are less offensive/ harmful to other readers or listeners.
And no-- I did not find Sean-Baby very funny... Except when he said that the "Rugrats" looked like babies that were stuffed into a sack and beat against a ceiling fan... That, I found funny.
No Seanbaby please!
Good news. Do I need to re-up my subscription?
Comments (AU Comments | US Comments)
Um... okay. EGM was not bad, they really tried to carve out a niche for themselves by giving the lowest average review scores the last couple years though which made me trust their opinion less. The problem isn't that EGM was bad, it's just old media verse new media. But hey maybe they'll pull a family guy.
@Grooveraider: Does NeoGAF really worth the wait? I´m curious for real, it´s not sarcasm or something.
Daniel Pizarro Sánchez
Well I just hope they dont go down the same path as EGM did in its finaly couple of years.
I stopped by EGM because they were to full of advertisements, no games were really given bad scores except for smaller/no name titles, and idiots like sean baby who tried so hard to be different they were a cliche and alot of their humor was just snarky, sarcastic nonsense with no journalistic ability at all. Not to mention in responding to readers letters they were often just being rude and gave no insight. I hated EGM because they tried to cater to their readers way to much and became a hollow, souless, sellout of a magazine.
They praised every high profile title and on the occasion they would have something negative (usually in less than 1 sentence) to say they would back pedal immediately by praising even stupid mundane things as to not upset any developer.
@SNAK3ATER: I never read a EGM magazine in my life, it's that good ?
bakura
@ReconToaster.: fine can you give me my money then?
uWaAvenger
@FigNewton: I beg to disagree.
@BiologicalShock: This reminds me i must go read raven's dojo!
@Jimbotron: spot on
@bullfrogj3: Ditto
I'm assuming this time they won't be giving out free subscriptions willy-nilly... that said I fully intend to pay to make up for all the freebies I enjoyed.
I'll be more excited when I find out who, if anyone, is returning. For now it's just a name, and if it doesn't have any old writers on board when it goes to print, there really won't be anything to set this apart from any other gaming magazine other than the title.
But those EGM guys are tight, so it would be naive to think none of them would return. Here's hoping
@Jimbotron: That's irrelevant - the fact is, magazines survive on advertising - they've never been independent. Actually pairing with a retailer would help provide them more independence rather than less, because they would be less dependent on advertising revenue.
@the sole attempt to archive everything.
The Phoenix shall rise again! Long live EGM!!
Mining4Soup
Ok. This is awesome. But, what happens to those who had a subscription that was never totally fulfilled (like me)? I'm going to resubscribe again for sure, but I'd love it if they fulfilled the original one first.
the_loxster
@sanyo: This is too good to be true. Better not jinx it, I'll put on my lucky socks today.

Without all the old writers, what's the point?
Bobby Brankiewicz
WOOOOOOOOOOO!. :D
NekuSakuraba
@Jimbotron: It's far easier (and more necessary) to elaborate on the negative than for the positive. I'd rather reviewers avoid long dissertations on what they loved, and spend more time telling me the parts of the game that might drive me batty, so I know what to expect. Let me be a little surprised by the aspects of the game which deserve praise, but prepare me well for the worst of it.

@Paladin58: I don't think your analogy is correct.
Favorite gaming MAG* that is supposed to say.
Bad ass, my favorite gaming ever is back. I have not been a subscriber for a few years now, but I might resubscribe when it returns just to support it and see if they have made any cool new improvements. :)
If any mag comes back from the dead, it should be Diehard Gamefan. How I miss that mag :(
@Deaf Mute: why did this need 2 comments?
trunkenmath
@Jimbotron: or grown-ups with nuanced opinions.
StratfordX
@Jimbotron: I agree, the last few years really did suck. I had the magazine for years, and I just couldn't justify resubscribing. I'm really excited about a gaming mag coming back, because I do miss it, but I want to see an issue or two on the stands before I give them my money.
Shinta
@Jimbotron: Game Informer is tolerable too, despite the laughability of their non-bias, but Gamepro is a bit much for even me. I haven't read it for a long time, but I thought it was mostly for kids these days.
Shinta
@The Cap'n: er, sub Ziff Davis for Harris. I don't know where that got confused in the brain.
@SNAK3ATER: let's all just forget that they got cheated out of their subscription money....
If you're gonna be EGM for the name cachet (and, golly gosh, I'm gonna assume that you're going to do it for that reason and not just to pay Harris's electric bills), then you gotta pay EGM's debts. If they don't, I hope everybody involved is reduced to eating dog food within the year.
Because I missed the paragraph where EGM (the new OR the old) was listed as a Not For Profit Enterprise, and its proceeds would be shared with its customers.
@Grooveraider: vg/ce was my favorite. Chuck Eddy, the final real Village Voice Music Editor (though he sucked ASS at that job, trying to pass off b-s populism as real thought) , used to write for it back when i was a pup. And he actually did a good job. I remember really liking his walkthrough of Adventure Island.
@ReconToaster.: you're making print media sound like a charity case, and not the direct descendant of william hearst. or, "charitably", the silver medal in the special olympics.
I mean, if these people knew it was a donation going into it, that would be one thing. God forbid that they got cheated out of what they paid for. And then got made to feel like the villians for it.
Seriously, it's comments like this that make me glad that print is dying. And make me refuse to spend money on it this time.
@Christian Hedlund: Bring back Sushi-X! Ninjas fix everything.
@Jimbotron: I actually liked the differing points of view. After a while you could figure out what each reviewer was in to and pretty much see things through their point of view then your own.
FPS gamers don't play RPG's like RPG gamers do, and vice versa, but there are things that alternate mindsets react to that the other might not see. I really enjoyed their review because they weren't just one big "thumbs up" hive mind.
I felt like games had to "earn it" more with the EGM review crew...but hey, I've been reading EGM since I was a pre-teen..so I might be a little bias...
@Christian Hedlund: Cheers to Sendai. I'm glad to hear that name again type from so many hands...
@Erwin:
Yeah, those damn agnostics were always EGM haters...
@sanyo: man, I still have issues from like over 10 years ago. I'm mega pumped about this!!!
I loved EGM. Them placing Symphony of the Night as #12 on the top 100 games of all time in their hundredth issue (the same issue that had the SOTN review) showed how much they knew video games.
Am I the only one who didn't pay for his last 3 years of EGM thanks to Joystiq's free EGM yearly subscription promotion?
Does this mean that my 37 issues I had left on my subscription won't be lost?
Jojuinc
I'm so ready to jump back onto the train. After many years EGM was the only gaming magazine I was still subscribed to and I was really disappointed to see it go.
I'm excited to see what the return will be like.
(faints in front of screen and wakes up hours later)
What happened? Hey look Kotaku...(reads headline and faints again)
I hope they get hsu, mielke, quarterman, and everyone else who has contributed back, too. That would be fantastic.
LetItRane
@Jimbotron: Personally, I thought Seanbaby's section was one of my favorite things to read every month. The rest of that is true, though.
screw GI, I'm subbing to EGM
**** YEAH! Best news I've heard in months! I hope they get all the old staff back, too.

Rise from your Grave!!!!! This should be the front cover of the 1st issue of EGM.
this is great news! im glad its back in the hands of the creator. EGM was starting to lose me towards the end. but back in the day (or like 4 years ago), it was hands down the best videogame mag. still have the 200-some odd page exclusive halo2 preview issue somewhere...

Nobody's saying that the magazine closing didn't suck for all the employees, but 24 bucks is still 24 bucks. No reason for any of the subscribers to not want to get a refund or at least something for what they paid.
I don't subscribe to game magazines....don't see the point. Most news hits the websites (Kotaku included) first, and any rare real scoops they get show up online almost instantly. If there are pics or some rare interesting article that I really, really want to see, I can just take a minute or two to read tht one article at the news stand, or if its a special issue maybe I'll buy ONE issue.

Fuck you man. Get over it. $24 dollars...
ReconToaster.
I have COMPLETELY stopped purchasing game magazines simply because no other magazine provided the same spectrum or value for money (most of the game magazines are imports here, and cost 'double' for me) than EGM. I spend some time on 1up but it's no EGM =/
THIS, is amazing news for me. I might buy multiple copies of the first issue of the relaunch to show my support!
@Paladin58: As long as none of the douche staff from the magazines final years are there, it should be awesome.
Jimbotron
Awesome! I'll be putting a subscription in when it launches.
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx:
wow you guys... really? You payed, at most, $24 dollars....
The guys at EGM lost their jobs, and a great 20-year running magazine, whose name was extremely well known, was destroyed. You're complaining that you wasted 24 dollars?
ReconToaster.
@Jimbotron: This. Thank you for summing up my thoughts exactly.
@GPman: So you enjoy being thethered to a computer all the time? You like haivng your life revolve around one? I don't. That's why magazines are of great value to me. I can read about games without having to sit at a desk looking at some stupid website.
Not to mention that info printed in a magazine is always there, regardless of what happens. Your issue will always have that info. Web pages are not that permanent. They disappear and change all the time, often taking the information they contained with them, never to return.
Jimbotron
@excaliburps: Anyone can play Suishi-X and Quartermann. Numerous people have. All they have to do is print the name in the magazine and there they are.
Jimbotron
They should work with Ziff Davis to get at least some issues of the new EGM to subscribers who got shafted, so maybe they will subscribe to the new EGM.
Gam3r
@jayntampa: And then everyone would bitch about EGM selling out, and rip on the magazine like they do with Game Informer because they are tied to EB Games/GameStop.
Jimbotron
@Import98: If anything, it will be relased online. It's be too expensive to print it I would think. And Mielke couldn't release it because Harris was dealign with Ziff to buy the magazine back, and he couldn't put it on UGO since they didn't own it.
Jimbotron
@Jimbotron:
They really didn't have a whole ton of space to write up the reviews, mind you. I'd just assume that everything they didn't bash or complain about was good...
Blah8
@Ganon255: Yes, assuming the staff that was there when the magazine ended isn't coming back. Please, Mr. Harris, don't let them come back!
Jimbotron
@Ganon255: It doesn't get anymore original than him, that's for sure.
Jimbotron
Ziff Davis stole 3 years of money from me.
Gam3r
@ZenGaijin: Yes, because the people that were there are gone, and they sucked. The guy who started the magazine, who started the tradition of EGM, is running things again. Hopefully he can make the magazine as good as it used to be, and stay away from the craptastic crap that made the magazine crap in the last few years.
Jimbotron
@WayByWind: No way. GamePro is cool. Not as cool as it used to be, but none of the magazines are.
Jimbotron
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: That staff sucked ass.
Jimbotron
Sweet! Definitely going to get a subscription. Even if I can read all the latest and greatest gaming news on here I love something to read while on the pooper.
CougarKid
YES! : )
I'll have the option of reading a gaming magazine that doesnt suck!
Well ok, thats harsh. Play is pretty good. But around here I only have access to Play, GamePro, and nintendo power. So I'm extremely excited EGM is coming back.
Hell yeah! Finally!
@SenorCerebrum:
Eversince Ziff Davis tookover, EGM WAS tainted.
And now that Steve Harris is back we can hopefully
get back to what made EGM THE #1 GAMING MAGAZINE ^_^
@Kobun:
I see what you did there.
Well played.
Squirrelbot3000
Wise fwom yo gwave....
I'll actually resubscribe to it again if it's awesome, tbh.
@Christian Hedlund: If by old crew, you mean the most recent one, then hopefully it won't be the same. They sucked, and the magazine sucked. Harris needs to reboot without anyone that worked there in the last few years. The Sendai days were the best for the magazine.
Jimbotron
@ReVivAL: No, I think it's because they would give a game a very high score, but still spend most of the review whining and bitching about what they didn't like. Like bitches.
Jimbotron
@SocraticMethod: I guess you keep every game on your hard drive, because downloadable games are the future? Some people do like to have a solid copy of information in their hands, to be able to look at where the internet doesn't go, or shouldn't (the 'throne').
Hell yes. EGM was the best when Harris led the magazine.
@Christian Hedlund: Might be better if the guy knows what he's doing.
Fuck yeah! EGM was my favorite for a long time, I was really sad when the shuttered their doors. I'll subscribe as soon as it's available ;)
I wonder if Dan Hsu can be convinced to return...
@octalass:
Take your complaints to Ziff Davis.
Great news! I'm excited about getting my favorite magazine again.
@Desanvium: EGMs staff at the end was HORRID. Whiney reviewers, smart ass responses to letters, that "Seanbaby" fag; pure crap. The staff ofthe 90s was the best staff. Early 90s, mid 90s, you pick. If the resurrection picks up where the last issue ended, I'll pass. It wasn't even worth reading on the toilet.
Jimbotron
@Silent Predator fell on bad days:
Some things are better left in-print. EGM and Retro Gamer are the ultimate mags that should continue print.
Fuck all the others!
That is so crazy! I was just talking about the closure of EGM with my friend at four in the morning while we were buying Sweet 'N Low.
I'm so happy I could smoke crack!
@e-friend isn't your e-foe: Are you demented? Seriously? You think the magazines are mostly ads? They are 25% ads at most, which is not a lot, and not a healthy amount for a magazine. That's the reason the magazines are so skinny these days. A magazine should have almost 50% ads. Why do you think EGM used to put out 400-page issues in the 90s? They had tons of ads, but they also had 3 times more content than they did before they stopped printing.
The amount of ads in magazines is one of the signs of its health. Fewer ads in a magazine is not a good thing. Id' rather they had more ads, because that would mean more content. And there is certainly enough games out there to fill a 400-page magazine.
Jimbotron
@Christian Hedlund:
Yeah, I miss the old Review / Sendai Publishing crew.
@wild_world_girl:
Aw man, VG&CE - I used to buy them along with EGM and GamePlayers. It was definitely the pre-internet days so I had to have all my doses of gaming news :P
@sanyo: WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO! The back of my toilet has been bare for far too long. (Not meant as a slight to EGM, I just enjoy reading while drooping some kids off at the pool.)
@Cess007: Yes. And hopefully he can bring it back to the good magazine it used to be instead of the shit it recently was.
Jimbotron
@octalass: Your subscription was with Ziff-Davis. They have nothing to do with EGM anymore. And EGM will have nothing to do with your subscription.
Jimbotron
@Bluevirage: Or do what I will do and subscribe to all three. I like game magazines, and I want them to stick around, so I will have subscriptions to all three, plus Nintendo Power.
Jimbotron
@iamspoo:
Clearly you guys were not reading the same magazine I was. EGM was always the best damn gaming magazine available even when they did move to San Fran. Just because they gave their honest opinion they were anal?
@Zeouterlimits:
Since you're here - ask NeoGAF when are they taking more members. Its been over 4 months since I signed-up. I'm as good as the rest of them - as far as gaming knowledge goes.
@gamesk8er: Hopefully Steve Harris is smart and forgets about 1Up, it's editors and contributors, and starts fresh. EGM sucked ass the last few years (Seanbaby is and was a douchebag). He'd be wise to bring it back closer to it's roots than to continue on the train wreck that magazine was on. The magazine was almost not worth reading; actually most of the time it wasn't. Games getting a score of A, while the reviewer spends most of the space whining and moaning about what's wrong with the game? Please, man.
Stay away from 1Up and anyone who worked on the magazine in the last 5 years. Make it as good as it used to be, not as shitty as it was when it ended.

@liquidnumb:
lol - what it sounded like on the Genesis XD !!!!
Fantastic news now they can ship me the other 6 issues they owe me!!!! Great magazine but lately I have found the magazine EDGE from Britain to be a great magazine. Game Informer is still good but they never rate a game under 7 it seems so they suck for reviews. Personally I also think since they are owned by gamestop. That is way out of line since they will review games positively so they sell.
@SocraticMethod: Although i get a majority of my news from Kotaku, it is nice to have a magazine to take with me on a plane, or in the bathroom, or when its not real convenient for me to be on the net.
NerdyxTimx
@Nightshift Nurse: Don't forget the douchy punditry, fair-weather support, and double-standard riddled criticism.
*sigh*
@GPman: Don't forget the douchy punditry and fair-weather support, and double-standard riddled criticism. Those were all staples of EGM and what helped separate from the pack.
Yes, most gamers are complete fucking morons.
I had a subscription through 2014, hopefully it'll carry over.
Kdawg
SWEET LORD!
Best news I've gotten all week!
I'm so glad I decided to wait to subscribe to Edge or GamerPro. I've never liked either one. GamerPro isn't a very engrossing read, and Edge is always late with the info
Who gives a damn about that though
EGM IS BACK!!!
Aurongel
Am I the only one who couldn't care less about this? Sure it had its place in the day, but now, the net is all I need, the rest is just old news with boring screenshots. I personally see no value in print mags anymore.
*sigh* I thought we'd managed to shake this dingleberry loose.
@sanyo: Agreed, I honestly think I will get a new subscription, since mine ended like the month or two before it got axed since I forgot to resub (I hadn't needed to for several years). Funny choice for the image, while it does get the feeling of shit right, most of the writers for EGM hated on Altered Beast constantly :OX.
Rajolae
AWESOME!

Good, good ! Still remember those days with no internet, any news are from a MONTHLY magazine, finished reading one issue, had to wait for next month, longing for another pic of upcoming good games.
jellyfish
@iamspoo: you mean right before they started doing the 1up show, which was the best gaming show. period.
i've read egm my whole life, and i just didn't see what you saw.
HOLY FUCKIN' SHIT !!!!!! STEVE HARRIS RETURNS!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S EVEN BETTER NEWS !! Wow, the original founder of EGM. Maybe Steve can get the original staff back together - I miss 'em ^_^
The good ole days of EGM:

@Ganon255: I'm signing up for life. I don't even care if they don't refund it@W

Hell yes! This is good news! WISE FROM YOUR GWAVE!!!
Josh Kulinski
Nice news! I remember reading EGM way back when I was a kid. Steve Harris was one of the original "Review Crew"...
So does this mean Sushi-X will return as well? What about Shane er Quartermann??
I think I might buy one when the new one hits just to see what it's all about.
excaliburps
or how he really says it - "AWISE FROM DA GUAVE"
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx: That's why you go on the look out for free 1 year subs, which I did for about 2 years, though I may have missed a few issues in between the subs.
pressstart
@sanyo: I believe you meant 'Holy Fucking Shitballs'
Pardon my french
They need to partner with a major retailer like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or Amazon to survive ... much like Game Informer. Game Informer was created by Funco to help drive the business and inform their customers ... and, it worked.
If EGM created an alliance like that, they'd do fantastic.
@Desanvium: They lost so many great employees (Even in the months leading up to the Ziff Davis crash, every week someone new was heading out the door... they obviously knew that UGO was coming. I still find it hard to believe that UGO is a real thing. To think that it was the cause of the original dismantling of EGM is repugnant)... who is left to come back (is what I'm wondering)? This will get interesting.
I really hope they offer the new magazine at reasonable prices. Magazines aren't immune to the American economy meltdown, and neither are the paying customers that kept it going for so many years.
@Coltage: Gah. I wish I knew. I also got a bunch of magazines that had pages missing.
WOOOOOOOO, I hope that the year free subscription I got is still valid.
@Zeouterlimits: "Saw it on Gaf."
No one cares.
@gamesk8er:
Remember VG&CE? When I was little, it was always an argument at school over which of the two was best.
@Dante_Ravenkin: Whooooo!!!
@SNAK3ATER: Why? So I can subscribe to a magazine that has 3-4 week late news that I get on Kotaku, or from GI's exclusive coverage?
@sanyo: I'm with you on the sentiment! EGM was an incredible mag, and I was sad to see it go.
@SenorCerebrum: umm, Steve Harris is the original
isn't Steve Harris the dude from Iron Maiden
Steve
@user_21938: yes
WOOOOOOO!Print isn't dead after all!
SprinklesTDD
@BiologicalShock:
The magazine started going downhill as soon as the left Chicago for the west coast.

Steve Harris' To Do List:
[X] Aquire EGM.
[ ] Make SFIV cover issue.
[ ] Copy paste 24 times.
[ ] Hire advertising staff. Maybe get a guy to write reviews and articles here and there.
[ ] Readers love rumors! Even ones I pull out my butt!
[ ] Pick a console. Praise it; bash the rest.
Sweeeeet. I'll be subscribing. I miss EGM and hope they include the last EGM that was never released with the first issue. Ya know, the one with SF IV that Milky said was gonna come out but never did
Import98
@sanyo:
I'm also excited about this. EGM has been missed. I have been a subscriber since 1992.
iamspoo
Harris calls the relaunch of Electronic Gaming Monthly a "welcome opportunity to continue delivering quality content to those everywhere taking a number 2 around the world.
Seriously, that's the only time I read a magazine. So heck, why not, bring it on! I get bored on the toilet as much as the next person and the back of a lysol can, can only hold your interest for so long.
@borrowedchief: Not sure if that is going to happen, but you can always call now and get your refund. It worked for me several months ago.
Coltage
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: Call and get your refund. I got mine.
Coltage
@xX-Wrath-7-Xx: You're in luck! Word on the street is that Dave Halverson will be Harris' first hire to take care of just that.
I'm excited for the news but at the same time I know it can't be the same. Half the staff works for UGO the other half has moved onto other websites or game companies. I guess I should stop being worried and just be happy, I'm sure whatever they put out will be great.
Woot! Now bring back (Ultra) Game Players and I will die happy
/waiting for his turn in "the box"
Will this EGM suck less than the old EGM?
user_21938
No excitement unless they get some of the originals back. I read EGM religiously for about 11 or 12 years and if they are gonna taint its memory they should just leave it dead.
SCOTT CASTS LIFE 3
Scotsdale
amazing!!!!!!! i will buy a couple copies of issue number one and if given the option- i will subscribe :)
i hope he can recapture the spirit of the early years- old EGM was a mighty magazine...
Thank god it may come back.
Getting my news from the internet is second to holding a print magazine in my hands.
No offense to the fine folks at Kotaku, seeing as how you're the only news site I visit for gaming related stuff.

Also: FUCK YES! EGM is alive! Suck on that, agnostics!
