First Red Dead Redemption Trailer Hits Tomorrow

First footage of Rockstar Games follow up to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver should be making its way to you no later than tomorrow, in the form of the game’s first official trailer.

Rockstar says we should expect Red Dead Redemption’s debut trailer to arrive Thursday, May 7th, giving us a look at John Marston—”a notorious outlaw trying to survive life in the harsh frontier when the newly government-appointed Bureau of Investigation approaches him with a deadly ultimatum”—and crew in moody motion picture glory. Hopefully that means availability via the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace.

We expect the trailer to look a lot like the game’s new screen shots, but with a much better frame rate.

    @saulpimpson: yeah it would be a great game if that book weren't so damned boring... Sorry, had to say it... Compared to The Road, Blood Meridian is way to rambly for me... Cormac definately got better with age.

    Pity though... I loved the setting and idea of Blood Meridian (and the judge was indeed both a bad ass and the embodiment of the abstract concept of evil) but McCarthy's disdain for proper punctuation and love of Dickensian rambling adjectives...

    Oh wait... this is a video game blog... oops.

  • pashaveliki

    I remember hearing about the first game, but the twists and turns of life made me miss it... definately picking it up, because this trailer tittilates me.

    Should i get Red Dead Revolver on Cube, Xbox, or PS2, guys?

  • Placentasaurus

    Awesome. Looks more serious than the first one, but still, holy crap this looks great. I CAN'T WAIT!

  • saulpimpson

    I've been reading "Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness In The West" and that has me geeked right now on Western Games. The Judge would make an amazing video game character/Boss. even if the book itself wouldn't make the best video game. I think that there is a great story to be told through video games in the old west.

  • Orionsaint

    I like to think of it as a Prequel to the GTA games and Bully and all these games take place in the same GTA universe.

  • AoE

    @laser beams: You should try to remain calm if nothing else then simply because every single game need not cater to your specific tastes.

    I for one loved the original RDR, which is not a GTA-like game. But I also loved GTAIV... Then again I don't think my expectations were set quite as high as most people's. GTA IV was not the first rockstar game I'd played, I knew already what to expect from them quality/innovation-wise. :)

  • Etheris

    @1up: I also don't believe it was the greatest game ever, but hate is a strong word. I was just curious about what would have caused such an extreme reaction to a game.

  • Gyaruson

    @Accordion: Some shots looked great (ie, landscapes, buildings, environments in general) but some of the character models looked off (ie, faces, horses, etc.). I see what you're getting at, but there's still time to polish some of the detail layers a bit.

  • Gyaruson

    @DanimalCart:
    The voice right before the ending title shot sounded like Bill Paxton, the one that says "No one needs to kill anyone, Bill." Not sure about the girl at the end, but I don't think it's Mila Kunis.

  • Gyaruson

    @octalass:
    They're big, four-legged creatures whose legs bend differently than the animators. It's tough to animate something outside of your own understanding. I thought the horse animation in the Zeldas have been okay, but for how far we've come in the industry these horses didn't look right either.

  • Lokicharms

    holy my god...that looks amazing. GUN was great (listening to Rebel FM gameclub about it now), and this looks to top that. The horses look very good.

    Lokicharms

  • 1up

    @Etheris: Well, lets face it, GTA IV was definitely over-rated but definitely not cause for hate. I thought it was a fantastic game, it was just some reviewers made it out to be the second coming..

  • PresDNA

    Looks like a lot of the stuff we did in the original only prettier.

  • Spikey

    @octalass:
    Let's see you get a horse into a motion capture suit. :P

  • Etheris

    @laser beams: You actually hated GTA IV? Why?

  • ghostcat

    Looks awesome. Very cinematic. I hope it keeps that quality throughout.

  • CoffeyWasHere

    Just looks like a nicer version of the first one so far. We shall see.

    CoffeyWasHere

  • laser beams

    @ecudevil: that's what i'm wondering. i never played the first- but this game is intriguing and the graphics are great. i think this kind of game utilizes the GTA engine better than GTA.
    but i absolutely hated GTA IV. if this is basically GTA set in the wild west, then perhaps i should try to remain calm.

  • Kaneda

    @Accordion: No I don't think these horses are also immune to everything except very high falls. Then again, maybe they are!

    Kaneda

  • DanimalCart

    @Accordion: I agree with MindPrints, I think you are being a bit hard on the graphics. Personally I thought they looked great.

  • scuba2steve

    Wow, looks real pretty... never played the first one, but this trailer's making me kinda excited! Really nice horse animations too!

  • Silveth

    @DanimalCart: I can't say but whoever it was she wasn't very good.

    I liked that the game was trying to feel authentic and serious in its approach to this game, but if they can't get believable voice actors to tie it all together, it might not work the way they intended.

    But still, I enjoyed the hell out of the first and not because of the acting, so here's looking forward to this.

  • FreakyFavabean

    So excited! I've had the theme song from Red Dead Revolver stuck in my head since the first time I played it, so I hope that makes a return.

  • Super_Moose

    I don't see any of the zaniness of the first one so far, that had better change. If I don't fight armored trains, machine gun ladened stage coaches, and circus carnies I will be disappointed. I also will need as many references to The Good The Bad and The Ugly as they can throw at me,

    Super_Moose

  • MindPrints

    @Accordion: Ugly? Really? Wow, it might just be me, but I think you might be trolling. Those graphics look damn good!

  • Accordion

    Looks… ugly.
    I dont know, something about the graphics seems off…

    I wait to see some hands on footage before saying any more.

    [Graphics arent everything i know, im currently playing Herdy Gerdy and Vib-Ribbon]

  • DanimalCart

    Does anyone else think that the voice at the end of the tailer is Mila Kunis?

  • Corz

    @Noks415: told me I needed to be an insider to watch it about 20 minutes ago. I'll take your word for it now.

    Corz

  • shanrulez

    It's already on IGN:

    [uk.xbox360.ign.com]

    This week IGN is covering it so keep an eye out.

    Great Trailer, i'm really excited!

  • Camper182

    trailer is already on IGN guys

    Camper182

  • bysty

    I hope it is not only dark and gloomy. The first one was dark and gloomy, yes, but it also had a great sense of humour that I hope shows up in the sequel.

  • OGHowie

    @undefined:

    Looks good. I'd like to see some gameplay footage though.

  • LCOS

    Looks great. I'm looking forward to it. Here is hoping for a PC version

  • liquid_kore

    @Bedlam: Sweet thanks for the link. I'm normally the last person to care about horses/cowboys ect but that definitely has me intrigued.

  • octalass

    The horse animation might actually be better than Shadow of the Colossus.

    What is it with terrible horse animation anyway? Every time I look at Zelda: TP or, god forgive me, Oblivion, it makes me want to throw up.

  • Bedlam

    @Corz: No it's not

    Bedlam

  • Accordion

    … Agro!

  • Noks415

    @Corz: It's actually not an insider video.
    I know this because I'm not an insider and I managed to watch it.

  • interim is a biscuit

    @interim is a biscuit: Oh, UK. Well that's 'bollocks' if you don't mind my saying so~

  • interim is a biscuit

    Wut? Why is it on IGN already? o_O

  • Rey Rodrigues

    @Bedlam: youre all over it!

    Rey Rodrigues

  • Corz

    @Komrade Kayce: however, it's an ign insider video which.. I'm not shelling out 20 bucks a year for a slow website that's been stuck in beta for the better part of 2 years

  • Ackers

    @Bedlam: nice find

  • AEREC

    ya...the trailer was already on IGN...looks good too.

  • Komrade Kayce

    @Bedlam:

    And thus, rendering this article silly.

  • Noks415

    I just finished watching the trailer.
    Looks great.

  • Funk McSnuff

    @Bedlam:

    Orly?

  • ecudevil

    Is it just me, or does that look like Niko Bellic on a horse???

  • kingofrain

    What, 1 frame per...forever isn't good enough for you?

  • Bedlam

    Uhm... IGN has it already:

  • tcolberg

    @Noks415: Fantastic, another game to go on my "plan to get" list.

  • Hooded_Robin

    @Gyaruson:

    It's the shading used on the characters in the game, they all look like their faces are hard surfaces rather than actual skin. The same thing happened in GTAIV so I'm guessing it's just the engine.

    It would be nice to have sub-surface scattering on the skin but with so much going on in the world it would bog down the frame rate.

    Hooded_Robin

  • Kobun

    @bysty: If you want a Western with humor, Freddy Pharkas is your man. :^)

  • Hooded_Robin

    @Gyaruson:

    It's actually rather difficult to get a horse animated correctly. I think the Dreamworks film "Spirit: Stallion of the Simeron(sp?)" was the first to do it accurately and that was years after animation began.

    You can't expect exact horse animation in games (at least this current gen) because all animations in games (apart from cutscenes) are loops which are then blended together. Riding a horse is such a fluid thing that even with the best horse riding animation loop in the world, as soon as there is an animation change the fluidity stops as the animations are blended and the new one starts.

    But after watching the trailer I think rockstar has done a pretty good job with their horse animation, it's miles better than anything else I've seen in games.

    Hooded_Robin

  • yeah write

    Rockstar knows how to put together a video game trailer. The stuff they did for GTAIV was awesome, really helped sell me on the game. They did some great work again with this. I'm still a bit sad that the old art style is gone, but this trailer got me excited.

  • ghostadv

    It's nice to see a lead character with facial hair that isn't stubble.

    ghostadv

  • ZizzyB23

    @Super_Moose:

    Man, I feel the same way, and I'm afraid you and I are in the minority. I LOVED the over the top stuff from the first one because that's how spaghetti westerns were. They were ridiculous and represented nothing that the real wild west was like. This looks like a major change in tone not unlike the change in tone GTA had when they made GTAIV. I hope there is still some ridiculous things.

  • Demoneyejin

    I reckon' this feller be up to par wit most Western moving piktchas. Can't wait to brand the kettle YEEHAWW! ( and a bunch of hat tossing and horse wheelies. )

    Demoneyejin

  • Eddie Alvarez

    you'll talk to Niko Bellic and Jimmy Hopkins great-grandfathers and you'll do missions for them
    That's what you're thinking I suppose

    Didn't GTA IV something on the shows about Red Dead 1

    Eddie Alvarez

  • spiiikes

    @MindPrints: He said he does not like how the graphics seem as of now. He must be trolling!

    Anyway, I liked the first game a lot, and I was always on the lookout for a sequel. Looks great.

  • Accordion

    @Hooded_Robin:

    you missed Shadow of the Colossus then?

    The reason SotC look so great is because the developers spent time to hand animate everything so it feels right, even if sometimes what feels correct technically isnt. That requires confidence which is rare within bigger studios.

  • Accordion

    @MindPrints:

    Trolling how?
    I simply stated something about it looks odd

    I really dont care for absolute perfection in graphics i mostly play PS2 games.
    Its just the style doesnt agree with me.

  • jusane

    @Gyaruson:

    I thought so too about Bill Paxton lol, and it totally sounded like Mila Kunis as well.

    jusane

  • vorpal_raddish

    Looks fantastic so far, very excited for this.

  • Creasy

    looks fucking awesome.
    instantly jumped on #3 on the most wanted for the next year.

  • laser beams

    @AoE: thanks for your response. i too have played many Rockstar games before GTA IV. i just didn't like the direction they took the game. that's all. i would never expect any game to cater to my specific tastes. i'm not a self-centered moron who thinks the world should revolve around what i like.
    i just wanted to get an opinion of what the red dead revolver series was all about. it looks and sounds fantastic. but these were in-game cinematics and i still haven't seen any gameplay so i wanted to know what to expect. i'm glad it isn't like GTA because i'm growing weary of the genre and was just wanting to know what this was all about.
    but since you say it isn't like GTA, then maybe i should remain excited...

  • laser beams

    @laser beams: "i'm NOT saying that it's a shitty game, and i'm not trying to insult anyone who likes it."

    jeez- i worded that poorly. i'm not trolling on the game- everyone is entitle to their opinion, i just dislike GTA.

    *phew*

  • laser beams

    @Etheris: i felt it had repetitive missions, poor driving mechanics (driving- which was fun in GTA III, San Andreas and Vice City- became a chore in this one) a poor story, bland graphics (and an awful lighting engine, i had to give up on certain missions and try again during daylight hours just so i could see where the guy i was chasing had run off to). the gunplay was weak. it didn't know if it wanted to be GTA or Gears/Uncharted so it ended up failing at both. No checkpoints in missions so if you fucked up, you lost almost 45 minutes of playtime just retracing your steps in certain missions. and the friends/cellphone... forget it. the whole thing drove me crazy and i feel blessed that i was able to sell my copy to a friend for #55 bucks 2 weeks after it released.
    but that's just why i hated it. it did many things well, also. but the things it did well (music- voice acting, the layout of the city, etc.) did nothing to make the game fun (for me). i'm saying that it's a shitty game, and i'm not insulting anyone who likes it- since it seems most people do like it. i just hated it, personally. no offense intended.
    i just wanted an opinion about red-dead revolver (which i never played) to tell me how it stacks up to GTA, because this game looks amazing, but if it's a wild-west rehash (even with gorgeous graphics and terrific story/voice acting) of GTA IV, then i will most definitely pass.

  • saulpimpson

    @pashaveliki: I don't think it's boring at all. it moves at a pace indicitive of the landscape. and the long journeys and relative inactivaty serve to punctuate the action like a thunder storm that comes after a really hot day.

    I still think you could use the book as a basis for a video game but you couldn't really stay faithful to the book in a committed way, like you could in a film. but the ferry crossing, the first time the kid faces the commanches, and even the priests story about meeting the judge would be instant classic video game moments. plus the game would basically force you to be a bastard.

    better yet if there is an old west game with RPG elements like fallout 3. the path you choose early in the game could lead you through a blood meridian like path where the things you do in order to continue are increasingly brutal and terrible until justice is finally served to you.
