From Software PSP Announcement Baffles

As we predicted, but not as From Software planned, the countdown clock that launched last week gets its reveal in this week’s Famitsu — on newsstands this Friday, leaked on the internet right now.

From Software is releasing a slew of PSP ports of PlayStation 2 game, and they are largely, you’ll never guess, giant mecha Armored Core and stealth Tenchu games. SHOCKING!

The games are Armored Core 3 Portable (out July 30), Armored Core: Silent Line Portable (out November), Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (out August) and Tenchu: Fatal Shadows (out January 2010).

There is one one curve ball — a genuine surprise, even. From Software is porting PS2 game Fu-un Shinsengumi to the PSP. Originally published by Konami, the game was developed by Genki and features artwork by Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa. Not sure how From Software came into possession of this title, though. From Software should have a countdown clock to that.

@Pombar: Are there any good Tenchu games?

    lolomfgisuck

  • IanC

Ports... PSP doesn't handle PS2 ports very well, unless they are massively reworked.

    (although i wouldnt call it a PS1.5, its more like a PS1.9)

  • Revenge_of_Nekojin

@reality.exe -console: Wrong again. Monster Hunter (et al) is typically lauded as having some of the best graphics on the system, yet the .iso's are generally only 500MB in size, which is 1/3 the space of a UMD.

  • DAS

@sereal: this is Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven and Fatal Shadows. The one already released on PSP are: Time of the Assassins and Shadow Assassins.

Yea I know, they should just go with the number convention. I was confused at first as well lol.

    DAS

  • reality.exe -console

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Technically, the PSP is sliiightly more powerful than the PS2. Just tossing that out there.

Why are games on it uglier? Less disk space.

  • fecalchaos

    *sigh*

Yet another countdown clock brings with it more weak sauce.

  • MrPurpleton

I've been playing a translated Tenchu: Time of The Assassins, and it's GREAT on PSP. I can't wait for Wrath of Heaven! Fatal Shadows doesn't really feel like a true Tenchu game though...

  • Animaitor

I'm getting sooo tired of all the Japanese sequels... they can go to hell!! Just hope they change that giant rat-cat-eagle from Trico to something more caring.

  • Phaper

Damn, no Metal Wolf Chaos 2! :(

  • Barts

@Revenge_of_Nekojin: ...not much, just somewhat. And it's not bad for a four year old portable console.

  • BlackIceJoe

I was so wanting the rumored Demon Souls Spin-off game for the PSP. Demon Souls is an awesome game and if the PSP did get a spin-off that would have be awesome too.

    BlackIceJoe

  • half-beast

More PSP Armored Core makes me happy.

    half-beast

  • Revenge_of_Nekojin

@jamesjohnson01: I think you need to go back and compare those games side to side again. The PSP graphics are noticeably worse. Like, much worse.

  • Mokon

    Demon's Souls PSP please?

    Mokon

  • Prinny1God

@Kymeira: but of course, it's perfect for Wii and ds to get ports of their other earlier systems! Resident evil 0 and REmake with no extras? Fantastic! Psp ps2 ports on the go? FOR SHAME!

  • V1L3

@Pombar: Didn't you get the memo? Ports of any kind invalidate the entire library of the console in question.

    V1L3

  • Pombar

@Kymeira: If you still live in 2006, sure. It's not like the system doesn't have enough original content going for it these days.

  • Pombar

Ok, but were any of those good Tenchu games?

  • xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx

@DAS: I doubt they'd announce it at E3 if it wasn't coming to America, they would just announce it at TGS.

    xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx

  • Kymeira

Is this all the PSP gets? Ports?

  • Artdeux

I can see this turning out badly.

  • xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: I agree, I don't mind it getting ports but it's just not new games if you've got the PS2 already. It's like when the Wii keeps getting gamecube ports, I already have a game cube!!!

It's not too bad but it's not really something I get excited for unless they add extra stuff. Then it's cool.

    xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx

  • Thai Tea

Oh man...I love me some armored core on the psp. But considering that armored core had a lot of framerate issue, I don't even know if the psp can handle it. I remember playing on the ps2...on some level it was impossible to play. It got bad as 1 or 2 frame per seconds on

    Thai Tea

  • sereal

@DAS: Isn't Tenchu already out for psp?

    sereal

  • TT

    @Crypysmoker: ah, right.
but, it would seem with the magazine company it would be in there advantage to have their story out ASAP. Especially Famitsu Weekly who needs to compete with online. Waiting two days seems silly.

    TT

  • Curse_Lily

So no Metal Wolf Chaos for NA/EU don't they know armored core sucks on the PSP and Tenchu just plain sucks for a long while now.

  • RedundantInsomniac

    Nice one!

    RedundantInsomniac

  • sander_dutch

    Demon's Souls DLC?
    No?
    :(

  • Crypysmoker

    @TT:
Because there are some comapnaies that will end their businesss with you for realeaing a head of time.
When we get magazines in, if we put them up before or after a certain date we hear about it.

    Crypysmoker

  • Brian Ashcraft

    @online.chaos: DOH. Adding!

  • Ginger Gouki

And now my giant robot addiction is going to force me to buy a PSP. Woot.

Joking aside, at least they're not going into administration ^_^

    Ginger Gouki

  • DAS

I await for the Tenchu and the Fu-un Shinsengumi. But I have to tell myself that only Tenchu and armored core will make it stateside. I doubt they'll bother translatin fu-un shinsengumi. It never had a PS2 english version :'( Unless From software decides otherwise :P

    DAS

  • CheckersMcGavern

@online.chaos: Anything passed Silent Line just isn't worth mentioning.

  • TT

You can get Famitsu today(Wednesday) if you know the right newstand to go to. I always wonder why they just dont put it out on a Wednesday at all places...

    TT

  • jamesjohnson01

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Rockstar was able to take GTA games from the PS2 and make them look almost identical on the PS2. Not to mention Chains of Olympus that looks like God of War on PS2.

  • online.chaos

You forgot Armored Core: Last Raven, Brian.

    online.chaos

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

Huh, thats odd. They're actually turning PS2 games into PS1.5 games.

Last I remember that happening was with Gitaroo Man and that worked atleast.

    Really, though. Odd.

  • carmina2008

    MGS PSP by Yoji's here.....MGS!

  • misc.insanity

Knew I recognized Shinkawa's style. Gonna have to check that one out.

  • misc.insanity

    @Pombar:
I liked Wrath of Heaven bunches.

  • Orpheus Gwenn

@GodhandX: Wrath of Heaven was pimp. Fatal Shadows was, ehh.

Anything after that, not worth mentioning. Though I might like Z.

  • Gam3r

    @Revenge_of_Nekojin:
Just because they didn't use the full UMD space doesn't mean the graphics are not worse because of using less data. PSP is more powerful than PS2, go look at their specs. It just hasn't been tapped.

    Gam3r

  • dopepope

I wish they'd release the Kingsfield series on PSP and/or the online store. And make a new one while they're at it. I loved that series!

  • GodhandX

@lolomfgisuck: Yes. In specific, those two were some of the best. The only Tenchu game that was better was return from darkness for the XBOX, because it was a remake of Tenchu 3. If they add something new to those classics, and let me play it on the go, then I'm set.

Somebody a few comments up said that the new Tenchu games have been disappointing. That's an understatement. I pretty much payed 50$ for a bandanna from Game stop. Tenchu Z was fun because they didn't mess around with gameplay much, and you could have a lot of custom character options. Online was a joke, full of the usual idiots. To sum things up, the last great Tenchu game was during the PlayStation 2 era.

  • RedRaptor

    FUCK YES.

I LOVED Formula Front, even played it in Manual mode the whole way through.

These remakes are gonna rock. Here's hoping the difficulty got toned down to compensate for the controls, though.

  • Nightshift Nurse

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven + Portability = Awesome. All you "ports" naysayers can sit and spin. Hell, it doesn't matter what appears on the PSP since all of you same people will crap all over it anyhow. Just stick to your space marines and red rings if "originality" is what you crave.

  • Mr. Tambourine Man

I recognized Shinkawa's style, and for a moment there, I almost believed it was THIS that Kojima Prodecttions were hyping up.

    Almost..

  • .Ota.

Last Raven was my 1st armored core, cool game.

    .Ota.

  • tobz1000

@Revenge_of_Nekojin: I'd like to point you to Broken Destiny.

The only real compromise is textures (and occasionally lower poly counts), but at half the res, it looks just as good.

    tobz1000

  • FP_slomo788

@Kymeira: You mean unlike the DS?

  • Pombar

@Prinny1God: Yeah, enhanced ports with stuff like new cutscenes, retranslated scripts and additional gameplay elements SUCK compared to the majesty of yet another Gamecube first party rerelease on the Wii.

  • Pombar

@lolomfgisuck: I've heard it whispered, in the dark forgotten alleys of twilight London, that such a mythical entity was once born unto us and shunned by the heathens of the earth and that we must pay for the sin of the species by enduring the rest of the series since (and possibly before).

  • MonsterKingRen

AC3 on the day of my birthday reminds me that Agetec, who published AC3 on PS2 gave it to me for free when there was trouble ordering another of their games on the site.

    Buncha good guys.

    MonsterKingRen

  • Trexxen

@Revenge_of_Nekojin: Plus, Monster Hunter Freedom (the first one) is a port of Monster Hunter G for the PS2 (and now ported to Wii)...

    Trexxen

  • Kirbysuperstar

@reality.exe -console: The PSP is not more powerful than the PS2.

  • AlucardsQuest

Gotta love downgraded ports... actually no we don't! Why not port them to the Wii? My PSP is collecting dust after playing the Star ocean remakes, and more than likely they will continue to do so unless Sony starts putting good games on the PSN.

    AlucardsQuest

  • Kymeira

@FP_slomo788: You seem to think I'm a DS person.

I'm not invested in either handheld, but it seems like every time Kotaku talks about the PSP it has something to do with another port.

Although, chances are that I'm horribly wrong.

I'm a PC gamer, so this Xbox/Sony/Nintendo fanboyism is beyond me.

  • Sonira - AND MY AXE!

Ah, I thought I noticed Yoji Shinkawa art.

  • Chibirazi

Fuun Shinsengumi huh?Would rather have Bakumatsu Dan but I guess the port is enough of a surprise in itself.

Now Last Raven on the PSP?I could barely muster enough control over my AC to beat the hellish missions on the PS2 pad,how is that going to work on the PSP?Either they scale down the difficulty or I have serious doubts that will be playable.

  • Revenge_of_Nekojin

@tobz1000: Exactly. Half the resolution means you can get away with worse graphics that still look good. You can also pull devious trickery like SE did with Crisis Core and use pre-rendered movies that are significantly higher quality than the actual gameplay graphics. I'm not talking about CG cutscenes, but the movie scenes where there's lip syncing and such. Not done 'in game'.

  • Revenge_of_Nekojin

    @Gam3r: You're ridiculously uninformed.
