Gametap Partners Up With Microsoft
Age of Empires 2, Fable: The Lost Chapters and Mech Warrior 4 are on the way to the game portal GameTap, following an agreement reached with Microsoft Game Studios, announced last week.
The full catalogue was not specified in the GameTap news release of Thursday. GameTap said only that its users “will have access to a selection of beloved classics from Microsoft such as Age of Mythology, Age of Empires 2, Rise of Nations, Freelancer, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Mech Warrior 4: Mercenaries and the Zoo Tycoon series. ”
The deal brokered is for U.S. and European subscription play rights, GameTap said.

@Flyhawk: That would be awesome, but I'm not sure how that would work - all the games would have to be programmed to work on a 360, wouldn't they?
Am I the only one that thinks this may be a two way deal with Microsoft announcing a gametap XBL aplication at E3?

Fable's been available for a good while now.
Gametap is pretty nice, but I'm really not a fan of the way they did the browser integration-I was skeptical all along, but they essentially rushed a half-finished setup out the door and in the process lost several key features, including most of the features that make play of what are now termed "browser games" tolerable. Sonic the Hedgehog is fun. Sonic the Hedgehog in a small window on your browser, and you can't edit the controls? Less fun.

ATTN: Anyone thinking of downloading Mechwarrior 4
There is a very small community left that plays the original or Microsoft-patched game ("PR1"). However, there is a slightly larger community that plays on two third-party modifications - Mektek's MekPak 3 and Netbattletech's HardCore.
If you are in it to play single-player, however, you will be just fine.

@gunluva The Steam servers are too busy to handle your reque...: TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!! That game is pure win! I can only hope for Microsoft to ever bring out another game on the Xbox...
@Meldy: Would be nice, but I don't think Microsoft's call centers would want to explain to people why the game they love is no longer available.
Oh wow. Just not two hours ago, I was thinking "I wonder what ever happened to Gametap" and then I glanced at my AoE Collector's edition and thought "I wonder if they have some games I wouldn't expect them to have due to some surprising new deal" and now this happens!

Considering these games have been on Metaboli for ages - and Metaboli owns Gametap now - this isn't all too much of a surprise.
Now if only they could give Metaboli users some of the awesome stuff found on Gametap.
@Shabadage: They still own the game. Since it isn't going and modifying the game, they can still go with it, I think. Sort of like grandfather clauses, but within the bounds of the original contract.
@Ragglefraggle:
Age of Empires 2, Fable: The Lost Chapters and Mech Warrior 4 coming to GameTap? Need I say it...?
This was a triumph
w/ MS on board you think they'd finally get out of the dark ages and support a 64-bit OS.
AoE2:TC > everything
How can they still release MechWarrior 4? They lost the Battletech license to Smith & Tinker.

@Ganon255: I must have missed something. Why would a Portal joke be involved here?

way to go... you got a partnership.... NOW MAKE STREET FIGHTER WORK ON MY STICK AGAIN!
Sorry.... Gametap subscriber rage.
LuppyLuptonium
sigh, I'm reading gametap as steam. If only. :(
@Befitzero: This is a triumph, I am making a note here, HUGE SUCCESS!
FREELANCER! Awesome!
Part of me was hoping it would be the other way around, with Gametap getting an Xbox service like Netflix did.
Gametap was a pretty great concept but rather poorly executed. A shame :(

I really want to like GameTap, but the instability of its client and unreliability of its content put me off. XBLA is doing what GameTap should have been but so much better.
@The Forgetful Brain: Ah shit your kidding me they changed their setup again? I use to like it when it had its own software then they changed it and it felt kind of like gametap lite. Now they are all browser based? Dam looks like I'm not going to go back soon then.
Befitzero
@Ragglefraggle: Yep Im as surprised as you are. But in all fairness for the price it is a pretty decent service. I know there where rumors at one time that they where going to be sold and that they might shut down but looks like that wasn't true.
Befitzero
I've always thought Gametap was an awesome name for a service like this.
"Open the Gametap!!"
"Yes sir!"

@The Forgetful Brain: Same problem my friend had with Steam + City of Heroes, except he has XP.
Ragglefraggle
The Age games make this tempting. But...
Not a fan of the new browser integration. That, and I've had a lot of trouble with Gametap lately - the games I actually want to play (Titan's Quest, Thief) don't work, no matter how many times I download and reinstall them.
I was really fond of this at one point, but my Vista doesn't seem to agree.
Gametap still won't die/
The Sad Onion Symbol Thing
Gametap is still alive?
Also I will stab anybody who makes a Portal joke.
Ragglefraggle
@Ragglefraggle: I run 64-bit Vista. GameTap is as good as dead for me.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH I remember MechWarrior 4! My friend got me that game! It was cool, only the controls can really throw a guys off...
J.Bourne
@Kobun: Eh. I can agree. Since they moved to the browser applet, it's been very unstable, but for most it is still usable.
@jrhawk42: That takes money, which they need subscribers to fund it...but they need to support x64 so people with newer pc's can subscribe...but they can't because it doesn't support x64.
It's a vicious catch 22.

@hired_geek:
FreeLancer would be PERFECT on the Xbox.
@Flawless101: Why not get a GameTap account then?
This is only a monetization method for Microsoft to get some money from crap they cant sell. That's why we don't see any of the Halo's or new-gen games. If Microsoft cant sell it on XBL they will try Gametap.
